Lee was sure this was a bad idea - but mostly because meeting anyone was scary, and meeting strangers was particularly scary. She wasn't sure why she'd ever agreed to it - but she was rather glad that only one person had taken her up on her rash offer. Right. She was in a public place. There were plenty of people, even though it was creeping on towards evening. She was right near her hotel, if she had to run away, and her hotel was respectable enough it wouldn't let strangers in. Safe. She was completely safe. Safe, however, wasn't why she was so nervous.
She was just flustered. Already flustered. Pre-flustered, if you will, in anticipation of meeting someone new. Christine, at the least, was excited, completely excited. She thought this was important - Lee was going to meet someone new, Lee was going to be friendly, and then Lee could just walk away if it turned out badly. This, in Christine's mind, was a perfect situation for breaking Lee a little further out of her shell. She cupped both hands around her coffee - she'd shown up massively early so she could hide at the table with her book. She'd promised a bright blue scarf, and she'd draped it around herself even if she thought it looked a bit silly.
It was all just so out of character for her, pushed by Christine and her own desire to do something a bit crazy for her vacation. She kept trying to tell herself it would be fun, and mostly succeeding. It would be fine, it would be fun, it would be fine, it would be fun. She cupped her coffee and drew it a little bit closer, staring into her cup for a moment and then sipping and slouching down a little bit further, toying with the edge of her scarf. There was a thought - what if she got stood up?
It would be fine, since no one really knew that you were planning to meet this stranger anyway. Was the calm voice of Christine's reason in her head. Great. Wonderful. She was totally not backing out.
Although some traitorous voice in the back of her head said she could just take the scarf off and stuff it in her bag and no one would ever be the wiser...
