Mattie heard what Avery said about NYC dumps, but she didn't get a chance to respond, thanks to Clyde's wandering hands and his semi-private question. She glanced at Becca - it was hard to tell what she meant by that answer, but Mattie decided not to read too much into it. So, she raised an eyebrow at Clyde and asked dryly, but playfully, "If I wasn't okay, do you think I would be here?" An entirely misleading question, if there ever was one. She probably wouldn't be there at all if she was "okay." As it was, though, she need a carefree, drunken night out, and hopefully her answer would keep Clyde from prying too much. She didn't want any serious talk tonight, especially with so many people around she didn't know.
Becca's enthusiasm was contagious, though, and she found herself looking forward to entering the bar. "Well," she said, looking it over. "This looks thoroughly American." It was definitely more of an observation than an insult, and her American companions would be able to tell that from the way she said it. Really, she was just pointing out the obvious.
