'David.' It always started like that, the sound of the feminine voice so clearly not his own, and either it meant disapproval, anger or some kind of lecture. Dave hoped it was a lecture, as they really didn't have time for the rest right now. Actually, what he really hoped for was a day when there was no more voice in his fucking head, or at least no voice even if the memories and feelings stuck around, but that was beginning to feel more and more unlikely as the months wore on. "Do you have to do that as soon as we step out of one of those things? Jesus Christ on a cracker, lady." The those things he referenced at the moment was the MTN, which even now left his stomach feeling vaguely not right – and that was when he wasn't trying to concentrate on the person in his head. Add that in, and the little butterfly jumps turned to something that tried to creep closer to nausea. 'As much as you seem to enjoy talking to me by actually speaking, please don't right now. This poor girl will be wary at best and even being in the same situation as you and molly won't stop your behavior from being very strange to her.' "Oh, for fuck's-" 'David.' "Fine. Stopping." 'Good. Now watch your language.' Turning to face Molly, he gave her a once-over to make sure she wasn't going to throw up, then offered her his arm. "I'm under orders from the boss lady to not talk to her out loud or swear. Can you believe that?" Once Molly took hold, he lead them outside the building into the bright southern sunshine, looking for the dark-haired young girl they'd come to see and, God-willing, take back to Indianapolis. Even now, Dave appreciate the levels of weird, crazy and even acknowledged the creepy factor of him, a completely stranger, offering this girl a safe place to stay, but that was why Molly was here, even beyond having John in her head. Girls had this genetic ability to bond, Dave was convinced, and it would hopefully work in their favor. "We wouldn't even be doing this if she hadn't gone all weirdly maternal over the combo of a family-less girl and her husband's illegitimate kid and she's bossing me around." Despite the complaints, it was good natured and Dave was even smiling slightly, trying to look as welcoming and non-creepy as he could manage. If he scared this girl off just by looking nervous/strange, God knew what might happen to her. She'd managed on her own this long, but that voice in his head – usually Mary, sometimes his own common sense – said that wouldn't continue, no matter how capable she was. "Do you see her?" he asked as he looked away from the view in front of them and down at Molly. |
