Matilda kept her face calm but interested as Rebecca spoke. She already knew what had happened, of course - not just because Clyde told her, but also because Jack was nothing if not a creature of habit - but it was more polite to act as if she didn't know. About halfway through Rebecca's story, Matilda looked down and folded her hands in her lap; hearing about Jack's villainy straight from Rebecca's mouth was, frankly, much more nauseating than she had anticipated. It was bad enough that Jack had harassed her, but to make a victim out of Rebecca, a complete stranger... yes, if she ever saw him again, she would probably do a lot more than just cut up his face, that was for sure. As if he hadn't gone far enough before; this was just too much.
She laughed, though, when Rebecca quoted Clyde - it was a ridiculous enough phrase to sound just like him. "Yes, Clyde has a point there," she said to her hands, and then she looked up at Rebecca ruefully. "I'm sure he's heard enough about Jack now to think that we're both complete idiots." She laughed wryly. "Though I'm probably the bigger idiot. At least you didn't marry him." There, now that was out in the open; there was no use in keeping that information secret - if it was, indeed, a secret. The first half of her and Jack's virtual sparring had been quite public, after all.
