David pulled his car up to the house. There had been some improvements over the years, but it was still very clearly the ranch it had always been. He'd never expected to be living there, but then a lot of things had happened that he'd never expected. He hadn't planned on getting married, or having kids, or living a relatively quiet life. The quiet part was the newest item on that list.
Before, he hadn't fully expected that he'd even live through the war. He'd quickly gotten in over his head and spent ages just trying to keep up before he really got the hang of what he was doing. Before he got good at it, and before he started to like it. It had all, somehow, worked out in the end though. His side may have lost, but there weren't many people who actually knew that it was his side, so it didn't matter. He was on the winning team either way, which went to show that sometimes being a two-faced liar paid off.
Entering the house he braced himself to be greeted, with varying levels of enthusiasm, by the three females who were now his life. It was a pretty good life. "I'm home, you can start the party now."
