Who: David Roberts and Roz Reed
What: Drunk dialing + evil truth water = awkward and confusing fun
When: Late Friday night
-ring ring ring-
"Hello?"
"Hey." -pause- "Hey Roz. It's David."
-surprised- "David?"
"Yeah. I was just thinking about you and, uh, I thought I'd call. You know, on a mad impulse."
"You were thinking about me? Uh, okay."
"I was. I do a lot. Or he does. I don't know. I still don't know, which is really really annoying."
-pause- "Have you been drinking?"
"Maybe. Some. You know, until we got kicked out of the bar. That's not the point anyway. And I'm drinking water now."
"As long as you're not drunk dialing me from a ditch somewhere."
"No, there's no ditch involved. But if I was going to drunk dial someone from a ditch, it would definitely be you, babe."
"Wow. Maybe you should consider, I don't know, lying down or something. You sound really out of it."
"No. Seriously, I'm fine. I was just.... man, I had a really shit night. You should have been there. I wish you'd been there. Not so you would have had a shitty night too, but, you know, then it would have been a lot better... Sorry, I don't know why I'm saying all this..."
"I'm...sorry you had a really shitty night. I wish I'd been there, too. More to laugh at you than to make it better, though."
-laugh- "Yeah. You're so kind and helpful like that."
"Hey, you're the one that called me. If you wanted kindness, you should have picked a different number."
"I can do without the kindness. I wanted to talk to you."
"Now I know something’s wrong. You hardly ever want to talk to me. Just how bad was your night?"
"Really bad. But that's not... I mean, I do want to talk to you. I like you. Even when you're being all difficult. Especially when you're being all difficult."
-pause- "Didn't you tell me a few days ago that you didn't like me at all?"
-pause- "No. I said I didn't like you sometimes."
"Uh-huh. But you like me the most when I'm being difficult. I think we've moved from drunk to stoned, David."
"Uh yeah. I think so. I do." -pause- "Stoned? I wish. Maybe this would make sense then."
"If being stoned helps this all make sense, then you'd better give me a hit." -sighs- "Are you sure you're okay? I'm a little worried about you right now."
"I'm fine. Feeling a little weird, and I can't seem to stop talking, but I'm fine. It's cute that you're worried though."
"Maybe you got roofied." -pause- "Did you just call me cute?"
"I don't think that's it." -pause- "Um, yeah. Yeah, I did."
"I think you're delusional. Roofies are definitely a possibility."
"I didn't get roofied, Roz. And I'm not delusional. Slightly drunk yes, but not delusional."
"If this is in any way payback for me saying you were hot, then we're even."
"Uh, okay. You're welcome to say I'm hot whenever you want, you know. You're pretty hot too."
"Um, thanks, I guess."
"Okay. Yeah, no, I should go. I just wanted you to know."
"Wanted me to know what? That you like me, that you think I'm hot, or that you wanted to talk to me?"
-pause, thinking about it- "All three."
"That's nice of you. A little random, but nice."
"I'm a little random. But nice. Most of the time. Well, some of the time."
"Some of the time." -sighs- "I guess I kind of wanted to hear from you, too."
"Really?"
"Sure, why not."
"I'm glad."
"I think we're making this weird again."
"Probably. But I might have been roofied, so I have an excuse."
"You can't prove that I wasn't roofied, too."
"That is technically true. So we both have excuses."
"And all is well in the world again."
-laughs- "Right. Something like that."
"You started it. Now I feel funny. I think you fucked with my brain."
"Over the phone? I didn't realize I could make you crazy long distance."
"Why not? You do it all the time."
"Well it's only fair, because you do it too."
"I don't do it on purpose. I think you do."
"Sure you don't. And I... yeah, okay, sometimes."
"I knew it. Did you call tonight as part of your grand scheme to make me insane?"
"No. I don't have any grand scheme. It's a very small, not at all grand scheme." -teasing but still honest- "And I called because I like you and I wanted to talk to you."
"You're doing it again." -sighs- "Just when I think I've got it figured out, you make things even more complicated."
"Again?" -confused- "If you do figure it out, let me know? Because this is driving me crazy."
"Right. Will do." -pause- "I'd better go, before this gets any stranger."
"Okay. Maybe I'll see you again sometime soon. Depending on what fate has planned for us. Goodnight Roz."
"Night, David."
-pause, then click-
