Who: Rebecca Rice and Elsa Jameson
What: Phone call - Talking over last night's excursion
When: Sunday afternoon
-ring ring-
"Yes?"
"Elsa? It's Rebecca Rice. I hope I haven't caught you at a bad time...?"
"Hello, Rebecca." -tiny purr in the voice- "How are you this afternoon?"
"I'm very well, thank you." -two can play at that game- "And yourself?"
"I'm doing well enough. So, how might I help you?"
"I suppose we might as well skip the foreplay this time, mm? I just thought I should follow up with you after our little venture last night. See if you had any thoughts for me."
"It really depends on how you see your future. Do you want to remain a stewardess? Do you want to work for me and only me? Do you want to have to work only a few engagements a week and make a very nice wage?"
"My future. Well, let's see. I enjoy being able to travel, so if I were not working for the airline, I would like to have something that would offer a nice wage, yes, and still allow me the freedom to do so. However, after this latest bout of squabbling in the community at large, my first concern would be, quite frankly, to stay alive."
"Yes, staying alive is a necessity in almost any prospect of a future. I believe you might have what it takes to work for me, Rebecca, but there is a need for secrecy and discretion. Can you keep a secret, can you be discrete? And, can you accept that you may have to keep the truth from the ones you love?"
"I realize that secrecy and discretion are essential in many areas of my life, now, more than ever. Not only is it good business practice, but it is also safer for those close to me. However...I also realize that in times like this...information is also a valuable commodity. It could be very advantageous if I were to position myself to be as well informed as possible...if you see what I mean?"
"It would depend on how that advantage is used, Rebecca. If you become a liability...Well, don't become one."
"I have no desire or intention to become so, but you know what they say about good intentions. The road to hell is paved with them--and it's one that neither I nor my mental hitch-hiker are interested in going down again. That is why I thought, perhaps, it would be wise to consult someone, such as yourself, who might have a bit more experience and success."
"Consult or work for, darling? While I do have more connections, I do not desire competition. I assure you, you will want my connections as well as what protection I can give you. I believe 10% is not asking too much. I've already received at least one request for a meeting with you, so I can see this being a rather profitable relationship."
"I have no doubt that it would be very foolish to try and compete with a woman of your connections. No doubt you could make things very precarious for me if you were so inclined."
"There are rumors that I've removed my competition permanently, but those are rumors, darling. Now, I suppose we begin. Meet me at the same place you met me last night around 7. Dress as well as you did last night. We'll discuss everything there, and you'll have your first assignment."
"There are all sorts of rumors. I'd be very overwrought indeed if I let myself worry about every little idle whisper. Then again..." -she trailed of dismissively- "I'll see you at seven o'clock, then."
"Oh, yes. I know that your companion isn't the sweetest thing. I do hope she doesn't upset our arrangement."
"Don't worry about her. We'll come to an understanding."
"Then see you at seven."
