"Oh honey, I'm so bad at homework, I'd fail at that, too," she retorted with self-deprecating humor, though it was all in good fun, and she laughed lightly to express as much.
Emily was glad when he took the money for her portion without argument. She told him what she wanted and then watched for a moment as he hobbled toward the counter, realizing that she should have let him grab the table so that he could get off his cast. But hadn't he just been lamenting not being able to do things because of the cast? And it wasn't like it was terribly exerting, so she pushed the worry away and just went on to find them a table.
The table she close was close enough to the performance area that they could really enjoy the music (and she managed to smile and wave at Marla between songs, which was nice), but not so close that it would impede conversation. She smiled at Connor when he rejoined her, her smile brightening a bit when he set the dessert between them. "Oooh, you didn't have to do that, but thank you," she said as she took her coffee, waiting until he'd taken a small piece off before tearing off a small piece for herself as well. "I'm weak, I just can't say no to desserts!"
