"Vipera aspis." "European asp." "Crotalus cerastes." "Sidewinder." "Crotalus...horridus?" "Um...rattlesnake?" "Uh huh...?" "Aruba?" "Nope." "...Long-tailed?" "Nope." "Um..." Eirena bent down and put her hand on her son's shoulder. "Did you check for cars?" Eli looked up at his mother, his backpack half his size and styled afer Iron Man. Walking home from elementary school they'd come to an intersection. And the mother might have had her nose in the snake book her son loved, but she wasn't blind to traffic, even if he apparently was. The child grinned. "Timber rattlesnake?" It was an adorable moment of defiance that had Eirena rolling her eyes. "Yep, smartie pants. But seriously, check for cars. I don't feel like scraping you off the pavement." "Yes, mommy." The boy was far more articulate than his classmates, most of which couldn't even pronounce half of the words he recited back to her. She had once thought that he was perhaps of heightened intelligence, but he scored average in all other curriculum. It just seemed he had a real knowledgeable knack for science. But he was also incredibly absent-minded, and that was worrying for a single mother. Especially when the chances of Eli being an enchanter were practically guaranteed, thanks to the pureblooded lineages of both his parents. He had his father's features: sandy blond hair, bright blue eyes. But his smile was like hers, as was his walk and his attitude. Though Eirena wouldn't take all the credit. Sofia rubbed off on him too. There was no question, though, that Eli was his own person and boy he let her know it. But then there were moments – moments like this one – where he reached up and took her hand, grinning, waiting to cross the street with her. Eirena smiled. No matter how independent he was, he'd always be her little man. |
