Classes and Course Schedules The students classes won't be played out, apart from the occassional thread starting with the end of a class or ending with the start of one. We do have course schedules and class rosters, however, to let you can see which other characters your character interacts with on a regular basis and to help set up the above-mentioned threads.
When Callie originally made the master schedules for each year, her goals were 1) to keep it as close to the books as possible and 2) to have the schedules work out in a way that wouldn't make it necessary for anyone to use a Time Turner. She was able to work it out such that every class meets for 2 periods (two and a half hours) a week. This means that most of the upper years are going to have a lot of free time; some people may even have days when they don't have any classes at all. (Some of the staff positions are also clearly part time.)
This is an AU, after all, so we can do it however we want. We can always say that the schedules changed before Harry started at Hogwarts since there were complaints that the students had too much free time during the day and didn't have enough time for their extracurriculars (the last class ends at 5:15). There is only one section for each of the courses taken by the 6th and 7th years, which fits with HBP. For the younger years, there are two sections for all of the core classes except Astronomy and History of Magic. Astronomy, History of Magic, and all the electives have one section each.
You can leave a comment below stating the classes that your character is taking (if you didn't submit them with your application), and we'll make you a schedule. The classes you can pick from are as follows:
Ancient Runes
Arithmancy
Astronomy
Care of Magical Creatures
Charms
Defense Against the Dark Arts
Divination
Herbology
History of Magic
Muggle Studies
Potions
Transfiguration
Guidelines:
First and second years take seven core subjects (Astronomy, Charms, DADA, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration). First years also have flying lessons for about a month in the beginning of the autumn term (see the Academic Calendar for the exact dates). Third through fifth years take the same core subject as lower years, plus electives. According to the HP Lexicon, third, fourth, and fifth years take two electives, but judging from Hermione's schedule in PoA and Barty Crouch, Jr., who earned twelves OWLs -- one in every subject Hogwarts offers -- that is hardly set in stone. We will therefore allow your characters to sign up for as many electives as you want. Students may also drop electives at any point in the school year.
Sixth and seventh years may only continue in subjects for which they have achieved an Exceeds Expectations or Outstanding on their OWLs. They may also chose to drop any subjects they no longer wish to take, regardless of their OWL score. This includes any of the core subjects that were required in years 1-5. In addition, sixth years may take remedial classes for any subjects that they earned an Acceptable or lower OWL and attempt their OWL again at the end of sixth year (or again in seventh year, if necessary). Schedule permitting, they will be placed into lessons with other members of their House, but that may not always be the case. They may end up with students from another House or in a one-on-one tutoring session with their professor. Repeating fifth year classes and retaking their OWL, however, is entirely voluntary.
