How can we possibly know? It isn't as if they'd tell us if they did.
Yes, of course there are no guarantees of success, but I do think that if you knew about such a disaster, it would be your duty to try to stop it. What sort of person would you be if you knew it was to happen and yet did absolutely nothing?
I found it terribly upsetting too. The idea that after all we are going through in 1940, it may all simply happen again? It was too awful. I think that if I hadn't devised a plan to try to prevent it, I'd choose to never go home at all.
