[A paper letter, delivered early in the morning by a house-elf. It has been hand-written with quill and ink, very carefully and neatly, with only a few small corrections, blots and smudges. Arcturus took his time over it!]
Dear Mr Dumbledore,
I am writing to you on the advice of my cousin, Miss Cassiopeia Black. She tells me that you taught at Hogwarts when she was a girl, and further, that you are among the wizards with the greatest expertise in Transfiguration that she has ever known. I do not doubt her recommendation, for she is a very skilled witch herself.
Before my arrival in Preya, I was studying at Hogwarts, and Transfiguration is my very favourite subject, and that in which I have most success. I came top of my form last year, and now I am in the fourth and Professor Shafiq told me that if I took my examination now instead of waiting another year, I would do better than all the rather well in it. Of course that would be entirely impractical, but all the same it is high praise from a teacher who does not give it lightly.
What I would like to ask is whether you would be willing to meet with me every so often, to help me to continue with my studies. You would of course receive as much muggle money asgenerous compensation for your time and tuition. I understand that this may be something of an awkward matter, as you may remember me as being an old man when you were a very young one, but I must say that to me we are at present perfect strangers. I do not know my supposed future, or yours, and have no desire to because people from the future It is only Transfiguration which I am concerned with.
I hope that you will write in return, with news of your decision. Until then, I remain
Yours most sincerely,
Arcturus Caelius Black
