There's no point in being scared. At thirteen - Cassian thinks it's almost thirteen, now - he knows that much. Scared is to keep you from being a fool. Scared is for when you have a choice.
He's here now, on an unfamiliar planet among unfamiliar people, and he can't think of anything he could have done to avoid it (they got him while he was sleeping, you have to sleep sometimes). There seems no immediate prospect of escape; he thinks he could fly out of here, probably, if he got the chance - he's never actually done it but he's watched his elders, taken mental notes - but there's not a ship on the whole island, to the best of his observation, and Jyn says the same.
Jyn's smart, for a little kid. He doesn't mind sharing quarters with her, for as long as nobody throws them out.
In the meantime he's observing, that's all. There's an open network, which is useful - the functions aren't quite standard, but he's getting the hang of them - and so far it's proven easy enough to compass food and shelter. He explores the town, sometimes with Jyn tagging along and sometimes not, familiarizes himself with the market, the train station, the main square. If he's quiet, if he keeps to himself, if he smiles nice at the adults who make a point of speaking to him, nobody takes too much notice of him. Mostly.
