Tyler hadn’t expected to see Elena in Preya, but then, he hadn’t expected a lot of things. Least of all Klaus, who he’d come to Preya specifically to get away from. But Caroline was there with him, and Elena too, so he could probably handle Klaus.
He’d only been in town a couple of days. He hadn’t brought a lot of things - he’d driven here in his truck, packed with some clothes, sketchbooks, and a whole lot of money - but he’d bought some furniture already and was looking forward to Elena coming over to help him get his apartment ready.
Elena had pretty much packed a duffel bag and left on the spur of a moment. She hadn’t thought too much about it, and now that she was here, she regretted a lot of things. She’d left a lot of things behind. It was a bit of a shame. She felt really foolish for up and running in the middle of the night, fleeing her “problems,” as if they were life-shattering. Now she couldn’t go back, and that was something she hated more than anything else.
She headed to the address that Tyler had texted to her, thankful to see another friend here in this strange place, and knocked on the front door.
Tyler was at the door almost before Elena had finished knocking- hybrid speed was a definite perk. “Elena!” he exclaimed, pulling her into a one-armed hug. “I'm glad you're here. I didn't know that I’d actually know anyone here when I decided to move.”
Tyler looked a little different than she remembered, but it was still Tyler to Elena. She broke into a bright smile and wrapped her arm around him to hug him in response. “I’m so glad you’re here, too. I… I came so quickly, I didn’t even think about all the friends I was leaving behind.” She pulled away, and stared at him for a moment, then deflated just a little with relief. It was Tyler. She still had Tyler and Caroline. (And Klaus? What a weird thought.)
“What can I help you unpack?”
“There’s not much,” Tyler admitted. “There’s just the box right there,” he said. “I was mostly just hoping you’d keep me company while I moved around my furniture. Maybe help me figure out where to put it all.” Once upon a time, he might have asked her to help him move stuff, but since she was human, it would just be faster, and easier, if he did all the heavy lifting himself. “I’ve got some beer in the fridge if you want one.”
Elena glanced at the box then back to Tyler with one eyebrow raised. She was grinning, though, actually quite glad he’d used the excuse to convince her to come over. Then she gave a little laugh. “Sure. I can definitely help with that. Though, you know Caroline would probably help to create a more aesthetically pleasing composition.” She moved further into the apartment and shrugged her light jacket off her shoulders. She set it and her purse on the kitchen counter. “Beer in the fridge already? Don’t waste any time, do you, Tyler?” She teased, then opened the fridge to dig around in the ice box.
“Yeah,” Tyler said hesitantly. “About that.” He still wasn’t sure what to make of his visit to Caroline the night before. He’d invited Elena to help him move before he’d gone to Caroline’s house, but now he was extra glad she was here. He didn’t know how he felt about talking to Elena about this, but, well, she was Caroline’s best friend. “I went over to Caroline’s place, and it… wasn’t really what I was expecting.”
Elena paused in her beer hunting to stand up straight and look into Tyler’s eyes. She knew that Caroline was very interested in Klaus, and that back in Mystic Falls Tyler and Caroline were a thing. At times a very serious thing. But she wasn’t entirely sure where each of them had come from, or what their relationship was--or wasn’t--going to be here.
“What happened?” She asked, trying to be as open as she could possibly be. Non-threatening. It was just Elena, the girl who was super easy to talk to. Right? She offered a beer bottle out to Tyler.
“I was just expecting… I don't know, at least a reunion kiss,” he said, realizing that Elena probably didn't want to hear about how he'd been expecting reunion sex. He took the beer from Elena, popped off the cap, and took a long pull from the bottle. “It was great to see her and she didn't seem like she was mad at me. It just doesn't make any sense to me.”
Elena nodded. “We’re all from different times,” she explained as best she could, trying her best not to think about Tyler and Caroline and a reunion kiss. Or whatever. She pulled a bottle for herself out of the fridge, too, and popped the top off. “And she’s happy here. Maybe she doesn’t have as much reason to be mad at you?”
“Caroline said the same thing,” Tyler said. “Though, I’m still trying to figure out what exactly that means. If we’re from different times, when did you come from?” Elena didn’t look much older than when Tyler had left her, which probably meant not much time had gone by.
“2010.” Elena said, softly. “Just after… after I turned.” She hadn’t been a vampire for long when she decided to come here. It’d been a whim, and something she almost wished she could take back. She’d thought about going home, but decided against it. Now that she realized she’d time-traveled… well, going home was a bit tricky, wasn’t it? Nay, impossible?
“When you turned?” Tyler asked, furrowing his brow. There was only one use for the word ‘turned’ that he knew of, but the Elena that he knew had never wanted to become a vampire. Then again, he wouldn’t put it past Damon to turn her without her permission. He thought a little higher of Stefan, but then, he also wouldn’t have been too surprised to learn that Stefan had snapped and turned her.
Elena did hang out with a bunch of crazy vampires. But it’d been a total accident, and she knew it. She didn’t blame anyone for what happened, especially Damon. Which may have been a little weird, she just didn’t think of it. She didn’t like the look on Tyler’s face, either. Or what he may have been thinking. “Yes.” She looked over at him, and flashed the red veins around her eyes. A clear signal--a clear sign--without having to speak the words aloud.
Tyler’s jaw tightened, but he decided to let it go. Neither Damon nor Stefan were here right now, and it wasn’t like he knew for sure if Elena had been turned against her will. Or if it had even been one of the Salvatores. For all he knew, it could have been - well, not Klaus because he needed her human - but any one of the deranged vampires that were apparently wandering the world.
“In that case, you can help me move my furniture too,” he said, making himself smile. “I thought you were just going to slow me down, but I guess you can hold your own now.”
Elena actually let out a little laugh at that. The tension had been broken by the joke--and she was thankful for it. She could absolutely toss a couple of couches around like it was no big deal. “I dunno about that, I’m still new to all of this,” Elena added, bashfully, tucking hair behind her ears. “But I’ll do my best.”
“Just don't ram my couch through the wall and I think we'll be okay,” Tyler said, joking but not really. Having another vampire to help him move things would definitely make a fast job even faster.
