Caroline was making a point to spend more time with Tyler. She was going to make sure he didn’t just disappear on her again. She knew she had no say in where he went or what he did. Even when she was his girlfriend she didn’t have much say. But still a note or some sort of heads up would be nice next time. Especially with how people seemed to disappear in this place. She was determined to remind him he was still important to her.
Today that was in the form of minigolf. Might as well enjoy the attractions Preya had to offer. “Alight,” Caroline said as they made their way to the first hole. “You are not allowed to make fun of me when I suck.”
Tyler hadn’t meant to worry anyone. At least, that was what he told himself. If he was being totally honest about things, he was a little glad that he had worried Caroline. Not because he wanted her to be worried, but because it was nice to get some actual confirmation that she cared about him. She hadn’t been cold to him, but, well, he still couldn’t wrap his head around why they weren’t together. Why they weren’t together, and why she and Klaus were so uncomfortably close.
But it was nice getting to spend more time with her. Maybe the scare that he’d disappeared had been enough for her to realize that, even though they’d been apart for so long (at least from her perspective) that they were still great together.
“Way to take all the fun out of it,” Tyler teased, though he probably wouldn’t have made fun of her anyway. “I’m sure you don’t suck that much anyway. Just remember that you’re a vampire now and that if you really hit it, it’s going to end up in Everdale.”
“Wait,” Caroline feigned shock. “I’m a vampire? No wonder I’ve been drinking all that blood,” she teased. “I’ll try and remember not to use my full strength,” she added still in that light, teasing tone. “Alright, how about you show me how it’s done.” As in putt first. Or hit first? Whatever the proper mini golf term was.
“Sorry to break it to you,” Tyler grinned. He’d never actually played mini-golf, or actual golf for that matter - since he’d turned. But he had played sports. Adjusting how he played football to accommodate first his werewolf strength, then his hybrid strength, had been a challenge. Humans were so breakable that it was something he needed to figure out fast if he didn’t want to quit the team.
He took his club and gently, very gently tapped the blue ball. Unfortunately, even with that tap, he still overshot the hole by quite a bit. The ball didn’t go flying, but when it hit the barrier at the end of the hole, it jumped up over it. He frowned.
Caroline couldn’t help but laugh when Tyler’s ball jumped the barrier. “And you were worried about me using too much strength?” More teasing. Not to mention Caroline probably spoke too soon.
Which was proven once she set her pink ball down and lined up her shot. Caroline swung her club at the ball hitting it with way too much force. It flew across the set up and ended up two holes down. She gave Tyler a sheepish smile. “Whoops?” she offered before taking off at vampire speed to retrieve it, returning to Tyler in a matter of seconds.
Tyler couldn’t help but laughing, loudly. Especially not after she’d laughed at him. “We won’t count that one,” he said. “Why don’t you give it another shot?”
“You better not!” Caroline teased again. Really she didn’t care if the shot counted or not. You win some, you lose some. This was meant to be fun. “I will,” she added confidently placing her ball back down to try again.
Tyler came up behind her, trying to still his thumping heart. He was more nervous than he had any right to be, especially since he’d already seen Caroline naked. “Here, try it like this,” he said, going to place his hands on her arms to help her with her grip.
Oh. Caroline wasn’t expecting that. And yes she could hear his heartbeat. Just as he could hear hers, which was it’s regular speed. Caroline knew Tyler still had feelings for him. It was obvious with the time he came from. She had tried to make it clear she just wanted to be friends. That too much had changed for her. But clearly Tyler still had hope.
She did let him help her with the shot. It stayed on the green this time, even avoiding the obstacles. But once it was done she pulled away, relinquishing herself from his arms. “There’s something I need to tell you… about Klaus.”
There had been something nice about holding Caroline again. It was comforting. Like before Klaus came into their life like a hurricane, changing everything to how he saw fit. But it was over too soon.
He furrowed his brows together. “I would really rather not talk about Klaus right now,” he said, a slight edge to his voice.
Caroline frowned at his tone. Of course she should have been expecting it. She knew how Tyler felt about Klaus and how he felt about her. But the longer she didn’t tell him, the worse it would be. She didn’t want to lead her former boyfriend on. That was just cruel. “I know,” Caroline said softly. “But you should know,” she paused trying to gather the courage to tell him. It wasn’t an easy thing to do. “I’m dating him,” she finally blurted out.
Tyler froze and stared. He had thought, just for a moment, that he head heard Caroline say that she was dating Klaus. But that couldn’t be right. “I’m sorry, I think I just heard you say you were dating Klaus,” Tyler said, a definite edge to his voice now. “The same Klaus who locked Elena up so he could drain her blood, turned me into a hybrid, and made me bite you. But there’s no way that’s right.”
She flinched at his tone. Yeah, Tyler was pissed. Something she had been expecting, but still experiencing it was a whole other level. She wasn’t going to defend her choice in boyfriend. She knew what Klaus had done, but she also knew the man he was now. People changed. However, bringing that up to Tyler at this moment wasn’t the best idea. “Yeah,” Caroline finally replied her voice still soft. “It’s right.”
The vein in Tyler’s forehead throbbed, and for just a second his eyes flashed yellow. The idea of Klaus dating Caroline made his blood boil. People could change, Tyler knew that much. But they couldn’t change that much. And even if they could, changing didn’t erase the terrible things people did. He still couldn’t think about Vicki without feeling the wave of guilt for how he’d treated her before she died.
It felt as though someone had stabbed him in the heart with a red hot knife. He couldn’t be here anymore. Not without saying something to Caroline that he’d likely regret. He turned on his heel, and stormed away.
The look on his face hurt her. She hated the fact that she had hurt him like that. Caroline still cared about Tyler, a lot. The last thing she would ever want to do was hurt him. But she had feelings for Klaus. She had denied herself for so long. Even back in Mystic Falls. She couldn’t anymore. He knew now, there were no going back. She stood there watching him walk away. Part of her wanted to go after him, but she knew he needed time to cool down. To process. So that was what she would give him.
