You've stood by me girl
I'm happy at home
You're my best friend
Things had been going fairly well with her transition to the night crew. Her sleep schedule hadn’t been so hard to change, at least not as bad as she had originally thought. She fell into the routine easily, but Selena and Natasha were keeping her on her toes when it came to training. She had always set her standards high, but they were at least another two or three steps ahead of her. In a way, she enjoyed it because it allowed her to push herself even more; without Eggsy around, she hadn’t really been pushed by anyone else before. It was nice to have a sort of friendly competition going on.
Having a day off, Roxy shot a text to Stiles to see if he was free for an ice skating adventure. Plus, she thought back to their last conversation and the observed relationship between him and Derek. She had been happy she had reached out to the later to get to know him more; in all honesty it had started out as an insight to one of Stiles friends from back home, but she had found she thoroughly enjoyed his company. He was a bit on the awkward side, but she thought it just had to do with his own interest in keeping to himself.
When she heard back, she changed into some leggings and a tee, grabbing a jacket and scarf for the ice rink. It had been a long time since she had gone ice skating and she realized she would only do something like this with Stiles; she knew she was going to be helplessly laughed at, but better Stiles than someone else. Besides, maybe she would be able to make him laugh before he started to tell her all the connections and history from his time before Preya.
When Roxy texted Stiles go ice skating he definitely jumped at the chance to say yes. Well, after he asked her “now?” He had to make sure she meant some time today and not like tomorrow or something. And after they exchanged a handful of texts, he finally got up and left Cora’s house.
He was seriously starting to wish that he hadn’t left his jeep behind. But he hadn’t exactly been thinking straight when he ditched Beacon Hills and came to Preya. And now he was carless and he had to take public transportation to get anywhere.
It had taken some time, but he finally arrived at the ice skating rink. He glanced around and didn’t see Roxy, so he leaned up against the wall and waited for her to arrive.
Roxy was running a little bit behind as she had more to get ready for. After her lengthy conversation with Stiles (why did she bait him like that? He was rubbing off on her more and more damnit), she was finally able to jump in the shower before changing and running out the door. She felt pretty confident that the public trans wouldn’t beat her, even with the added shower, but she was surprised to see him waiting for her as she pulled into the parking lot.
“Wow, must have been a slow day for transport.” She gave him a nudge as she got closer. “You haven’t been waiting long have you?”
Stiles had started to zone out as he waited for Roxy. He finally looked up and snapped out of it when he saw her feet coming his way. “Or maybe you had a little too much fun in the shower,” he countered back with a sideways smirk. “Umm, no, not long. Maybe fifteen or twenty minutes,” he said with a slight shrug of shoulders. He honestly didn’t know how long he had been waiting there. It didn’t matter. She was here now. “Ready to go in and get your skate on?”
Roxy couldn’t help but smack him at what he said, a scowl on her face. “Don’t go there Stilinski. I don’t like the thought of you thinking of me in the shower.” She doubted if that was really the case, but it still didn’t seem quite appropriate for him to make those jokes.
She glanced towards the doors and sighed. “I suppose I’m as ready as I’ll ever be. Remember, just one picture, no videos, and you can’t laugh if I’m clinging to you the whole time.”
“Hey, ow,” he said as he rubbed at the spot that Roxy had smacked him in. “I already went there. Quite a few times.” He smiled at her. He was just messing with her since he knew it was bugging her.
“Yeah, yeah, no video. Just one picture. Let’s go.” He grabbed her by the write and pulled her inside. “Just don’t cling too tightly. I...er...kind of hurt.” He wasn’t going to go into any detail. But the new scratch marks he got from Cora were still there, reminding him that they weren’t that old especially when any kind of pressure was applied to those areas.
Roxy just stared at him a moment, her lips pursed, not sure if he was joking or not. She liked Stiles, a lot, but he was definitely a friend and too young for her. She knew some things couldn’t be helped, but she didn’t like thinking Stiles thought of her in that way.
“I hope you’re joking,” she said, willing herself to be pulled along by him. But she let the subject drop, instead focused on the task at hand. As they waited to get their skates, she glanced towards the rink, watching as people skated around in circles. She watched a little girl skate around as if she had been walking and fly into the air in a twirl. She couldn’t help but raise her eyebrows, impressed by her talent.
“Hurt?” she asked, turning her attention back to him? One eyebrow lowered as she inspected him. “Yes, I see you have some new bruising around the neck. Must have been a very serious attack. I hope you’re alright?” Now it was her turn to tease and grin. “Are you sure you want to go skating? What if you fall and hurt yourself more if you’re hurt?”
It really was all Stiles was doing. Just teasing. He didn’t look at Roxy like that. She was his friend and nothing more. Hell, she was almost like the sister he never had. “I am joking. I promise you.” and he will drop the whole shower tease now. He was pretty sure that he’d find something new to tease her about, especially after today.
“Are you teasing me now?” That wa a stupid question. Yes, it was Roxy’s turn to tease. “You might think it was if you saw my back.” He lifted his t-shirt up a little just to show her some of the scratches that were on his side. “That’s just a preview.” He let go of his shirt and grabbed the skates when they were finally handed to them. “Yes, I’m sure I want to go skating. Do you think I’m going to pass this up? I want to see you skate.” And possibly get a funny picture, but he didn’t say that. He just smiled before he led them to a spot so that they could get their shoes off and put their skates on.
“Good.” It was said with a nod of her head, happy that that was a conversation they wouldn’t have to have again...at least she hoped. But he seemed more interested in telling/showing her what he had been up to and her eyebrows shot up. “Bloody hell Stiles, what...do I even want to know?” She hoped he wasn’t showing her some kind of abuse because she’d have to report it, but part of her realized that it was more of a pleasure than a hurt. She shook her head, not wanting to be on the other end of the conversation either. She reflected the same sentiment as him, thinking him a younger brother she would do anything for. But along with that brotherly/sisterly feelings were not needing to know about ones sex life.
She followed him over and tugged her boots off and pulling the skates on, lacing them up as tightly as she could. “If only for your enjoyment, I guess we can.” Well, it was certainly too late for second thoughts. Both skates were on and she looked at him with a bit of trepidation. “No phone yet. Let me get use to it first.” She stood up, the rubbered ground helping to walk from the benches to the ice. She stopped at the edge, looking down between the ice and the firm ground she was on.
She looked back and reached for Stiles hand, already clinging to it. “How did we decide this again?” she asked, as they stepped out onto the ice. It was a moment of hesitation and a wobble in which she grabbed onto his arm with both hands. “Was this your idea?”
“I’m pretty sure you can come to your own conclusions.” Stiles didn’t really think that he needed to spell it out to her. “Unless you want me to start getting into details.” He was kidding. He knew she wouldn’t want to hear it. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t tease a bit.
He sat down on the bench, took his shoes off and put the skates on. It didn’t take him long before he was stand up and looking down at Roxy. She was totally hesitating and it was kind of funny. “No backing out,” he told her just in case she was thinking about it.
He followed after her and then stopped behind her, a hand on the wall, waiting to see if she’d go. “Honestly, I don’t remember,” he said with a small shrug of his shoulders. He just knew it was brought up and they agreed to do it. “I think it was a mutual idea.” He stepped out onto the ice, one hand on the wall and the other held by Roxy. If she hadn’t been holding onto him, he wouldn’t have a hand on the wall, but he didn't want to go down. “Oh my god.” He looked at her when she practically clung to him for dear life. “Here,” he tried to peel her hands away and then placed them on the wall, “Hold on to that. It’ll be a lot more stable than I am. Especially if you bring me down with you.” Which he was pretty sure she was going to end up doing if she kept clinging to him. “You’re over thinking it too much. You need to relax.”
“You need to relax,” she said through gritted teeth, her legs feeling a bit wobbly as she tried to focus on her hands gripping the railing. “See, you’ve already let me go! I thought you were going to help me with this!” The biggest fear she had was falling and making a fool out of herself; of all the missions and all the work she had ever done, this seemed to be ten times worse. She reached out for his hand again, trying to think on what he said about relaxing.
“Give me your hand. I promise I won’t knock you down so your sex bruises get hurt any more.” She glanced at him and smirked, remembering not to lock her knees. That was all they needed, for her to faint on the ice.
Before Stiles could take hold of her hand again, Roxy stepped to try and make some distance on the ice, only causing herself to lose her balance and fall. She went down hard, hitting her butt on the ice first before sprawling out on her back. She just lay there for a moment, staring up at the lights above her. “So...this is the picture opportunity and we can call it a good run, yeah?” She looked up as he came into view. “Some hot cocoa sounds good.” Or something stronger. What had she been thinking in agreeing to this?
But it wasn’t like her to give up so easily. She sighed and sat up, holding her hand out for Stiles to help her. “How the bloody hell am I suppose to get up from this? I’ll just fall back down again!”
“I am helping you!” He wondered what she’d do if he started to laugh at her now. It was funny. She was so freaked out and worrying and it showed and it was just funny as hell.
“Okay, fine,” he reached out so that she could take a hold of his hand. “If you go down, I’m letting go or I’m landing on you.” He shook his head and rolled her eyes. “I shouldn’t have told you.”
And then Roxy went down. She kind of bounced and then she was flat on her back. He skated over a little bit and then looked down at her. “It was more of a video type moment,” he joked. “We can get drinks later. You’re not really giving up already? You’re barely a foot away from the rink’s entrance.”
He held his hand out again, ready to help Roxy get back up onto her feet. “Get on your knees, grab the wall and grab my hand and then pick yourself back up. Why do you have this thing about falling? Others are falling, look,” he pointed out towards the other people on the rink. A girl on the other side of the rink lost her footing and went tumbling to the ground. “See. Now come on.” He reached down and grabbed her hand.
Roxy grumbled as she did as she was instructed, surprised that Stiles had a simple way to help her up. “I don’t like failing.” She looked up at Stiles, as if that explained everything. All sorts of things seemed to come naturally to her, even some of the most difficult tests and trainings she had done. But ice skating? This was a whole new level for her, something that a child could do. It didn’t help her mood to think she struggled at something so easy.
But Stiles was right (something she wouldn’t say out loud) and she had to persevere. Holding onto his hand, but not clinging to it like it was her only lifeline, Roxy tried again. She started to loose balance and tightened her hold on his hand, but didn’t fall this time. She gave him a skeptical look before starting to move again.
The beginning was very shaky as they made their first lap around the rink. She stayed fairly close to the wall and held his hand through the whole thing. There were a couple moments it looked like she might fall, but she was able to stay on her feet. “This is actually a good work out for your calves,” she said, feeling the muscles pull from balancing on the skates. “Maybe I should do this more often.” She soon began to see that she was trying to walk on the ice, when you obviously needed to skate. Her strides became longer and she was able to finally let go of Stiles. She flashed him a grin before losing her balance and she reached out for the wall to cling to.
“Well, I’ve almost got it now. How come you’re so good at it?”
“Nobody likes to fall, but it happens.” He wondered if there was more to it.
Roxy could give him that look all she wanted, but he kind of did know what he was talking about. And he also knew that he was going to get her to go around the rink at least once. That was his goal. After that it was just a bonus.
Slowly but surely they had made it around once and they were still going and Roxy was actually doing pretty good. There were some wobbly moments, but he helped her as much as he could to keep her upright. “Maybe you should,” he said, skating alongside her. “Because I’ve done this quite a few times back at home.” He had gotten pretty used to Roxy holding on to his hand, but he was glad that she was starting to feel confident enough to skate on without holding onto him. “Look at you...I think you’re starting to get the hang of it.”
“Don’t jinx me,” she said, getting ready to go on lap two. But yeah, she was starting to feel a bit more confident with it. “But yeah...I guess this isn’t so bad anymore. She glanced over at him. “Went ice skating a lot huh? I didn’t know that was a cool thing to do in secondary. I thought you’d be playing video games or online or something.” She grinned, waving her arms as she felt herself lose balance, but managed to stay upright.
“How many laps do you think we need to do to make it worthwhile? Like...five more?”
Stiles slowly skated beside Roxy all the way around the rink. Whenever she had a wobbly moment, he’d reach out, ready to grab her and stabilize her if he needed, but mostly she was doing good without his help. “When I was younger, sure. Oh, I do that too. Or I did when I had time.” Keeping the town safe and everything else sort of ate up his free time. And he didn’t seem to have too much of it here in Preya either. He laughed a little when she started waving her arms around. “Are you trying to take flight?” he jokingly asked.
“A few more?” He didn’t care. He got Roxy to go around a few times already, he was happy. Although, he still needed to get a picture of her, but only when he least expected it.
“Ha yeah, trying to fly away!” But really it wasn't so bad now. She was even able to pick up speed and found she didn't need to reach out for him as much. “This isn't so bad,” she said, suddenly in control and enjoying herself. She looked over at Stiles and grinned. “You're a pretty good teacher. I didn't know you could be so patient with someone like me.”
After a couple more laps without falling, Roxy pulled over to the side and leaned against the railing. “This is actually a really good work out! My calves feel like they're on fire!” Roxy was always open to trying new techniques of workout and now that she was comfortable with skating, she would consider it.
“Want to race our last lap?”
Smiling, Stiles said, “And you didn’t want to do this. Now you’re enjoying it and talking about how great of a work out this is.” He really was glad that she didn’t end up hating this whole thing or he might have felt a little bad for dragging her here.
“Think you’re ready for that?” he asked as he stopped and looked at her. “I’ll race you...and I’ll win.” He skated back over to Roxy and then stood next to her. “Starting line and finish line is right here,” he told her as he pointed to the spot where Rox was holding on to.
“Yeah, I'm ready. You win, I buy lunch. I win, you dress up as Harry Potter for Halloween.” She couldn't help but grin at him, knowing full well he'd beat her. She looked where he pointed, nodding her head.
“Right, who counts off?”
“Err, maybe.” He just shook his head as she grinned at him.
“Me! I’ll count to three and then we go,” he told her. “Okay,” he said as he got ready. Once Roxy was ready that’s when he started the count. “One...two...three!” On three he took off.
Roxy was surprised that Stiles actually started on three than to jump the gun, but he probably had the confidence going for him. As he yelled three, she took off after him, happy that she kept to her feet rather than go down. She was well behind him as they made the final turn to get to the finish line. She tried to reach out to pull him back, but he was a good ways ahead.
She pulled up last, a bit winded.
“Right,” she said, putting both hands on her knees. “Winner, Stiles.” She looked up at him, grinning. “So...lunch?”
Stiles skated as fast as he could while also trying not to run anyone over and it wasn’t long before he was crossing their imaginary finish line. He slowed down and looked back just in time to watch Roxy cross the fake line. “And the crowd goes wild,” he said as he put his hands up in victory. He skated over and then skated in a circle around her. “Yeah, lunch sounds good. Lead the way...loser.” He grinned a huge grin and then waited for her to lead the way.
“Gracious,” she said with a roll of her eyes as she lead the way off the ice. It had been better than she would have thought, but she would be happy to be sitting with something warm or eat or drink. “Anything you feel like in particular?” Really she could go for a drink, but she wasn’t going to do so with Stiles with her.
Stiles followed Roxy off of the ice. “No, not really. What about you?” he asked before saying. “Actually, let’s get out of here and you can pick wherever we go. I got you to come here when you weren’t really sure about it. You should be able to pick where we end up next.”
Roxy thought about it for a moment, taking off her skates and slipping her boots back on. “What if we went completely opposite and headed to Brightford? I love their grille restaurant. Does that sound ok?” Skates in hand, she looked at Stiles all ready and set to go.
He sat down on the bench and removed his own skates and put his shoes back on. “Sounds good to me. I haven’t been there, so it’s a nice change and something new to try.” Honestly, as long as the food was good, he didn’t care where they ended up. He grabbed the skates and stood up. It seemed like they were both ready and he headed over to the rental counter and handed his skates back. Once Roxy did the same he started to lead the way out of the building. “We should come back and do this again.”
“Should we?” She gave him a skeptical look, but she wouldn’t completely shut it down. “I guess it would be a good activity to do once the holidays are here.” Christmas...everyone was so excited for Halloween but she was already getting excited for the Christmas holiday. She knew that wouldn’t go over well with a lot of people and it tended to be something she kept to herself.
She unlocked the car and got in, waiting for Stiles before pulling out to head to their next destination. “One more thing to check off our to do list. What else do we have on there?”
“Yeah, we should. I mean, why not? We had fun.” He looked over ather. “You did have fun, right? You weren’t faking it?” He asked. “We could always do roller skating next,” he suggested with a huge smile.
Once they reached her car and she unlocked the door, he climbed in and buckled up. “Theme park and teach me how to use a bow and arrow.” They hadn’t come up with anything else yet. But he was sure that in time they would come up with more things to do.
She smiled at him as she pulled out of the spot and headed for the freeway. “Yeah, I guess it was alright,” she said, a teasing smile on her lips. “I think I would definitely do it again. Could we wear ugly Christmas sweaters?” Roxy wasn’t ashamed that she had a few but usually only wore them around the house. Stiles seemed the sort of person who would go all out with her though.
She nodded her head as he listed the other two activities. “Yeah, still not sure about the theme park, but I’d be down to take you to a shooting range soon.” She glanced over at him. “I can still trust you with a bow and arrow, right?” She’d make sure they went to a very open field for it.
“I don’t have an ugly Christmas sweater,” he told Roxy as he looked away from the the window and over at her. “Anyway, aren’t you supposed to break those things out once December hits?” They were far from December.
“I’m going to get you to go. One of these. Mark my words!” It might not be anytime soon, but he was totally going to get her to go with him. “Maybe,” he replied with a shrug as he looked back out at the scenery passing them by. He wasn’t going to mention how if he friends knew about this that they’d strongly suggest that he didn’t put his hands on any kind of weapon. But, she didn’t need to know that!
Roxy’s mouth dropped open in shock. “You don’t have an ugly Christmas sweater? Guess you’ll be getting a present early this year. And it’s never too early to break out an ugly Christmas sweater.” Roxy absolutely adored Christmas. Everyone seemed to be wild about Halloween but Roxy already had her eye set for the holiday season. But that was something she kept to herself as she didn’t want to be ridiculed for getting excited for a holiday that was still two months away.
“Yeah, one of these days,” she said with a grin. “I’m sure we’ll go I just don’t know how much fun you’ll have since I’m not a big ride person.” Which was silly to say as she had been to outer space for her first mission. “But I’m sure we could find other things to do. Maybe they have those type of carnival games we can play. Maybe you’ll even beat me at one!” She grinned as she pulled into the restaurant parking lot. She found a spot and put the car in park, unbuckling to head out.
“I’m gonna need more than a maybe,” she said. “I don’t want to take you out on the range and have you somehow fire an arrow at me.”
Stiles looked over at Roxy when her expression caught his attention. “Uh, no. Why would I need one for?” They were ugly and they looked itchy and it was totally not his style. “Sure it is! Then again it seems like Christmas is creeping in sooner and sooner each year.”
He knew if they went they would have fun even if Roxy didn’t get on a lot of rides. “It’ll be great when we go. You’ll see!” Roxy was definitely worry too much over something that they weren’t going to do for a while. “I will!”
Once she parked, he was out of the car and following her into the restaurant. “I’m not going to shoot you with an arrow.”
“Everyone needs an ugly sweater,” she said, holding the door open for him and following after. “I’m really surprised you don’t have one actually.” She was sure she could find something he would like and made a mental note to shop around once she got home.
A waitress came over and showed them to their table and Roxy slid into the booth. After she left with their menus on the table, Roxy grabbed one and looked through the items. “I don’t think you’ll purposefully shoot me. It’s just better safe than sorry.” She decided on a cheeseburger for today and closed her menu, folding her hands on top of it. “Have you ever been shot with an arrow? It’s painful.”
“Do they really need an ugly sweater?” Stiles didn’t think so. Those things were pretty ugly. “Maybe someone should throw an ugly Christmas sweater party near Christmas,” he jokingly suggested. “I do hoodies and plaid shirts, not ugly sweaters,” he pointed out.
It wasn’t long before they were inside and seated. He had looked over the menu, not totally sure what he felt like eating just yet. “I would never purposefully shoot you,” he told her as he glanced up from the menu. “No, I can’t say that I have, but I’ve dealt with other things.”
“Everyone needs an ugly sweater! And it’s not like you’d have to wear it multiple times during the holiday, only if you wanted to. But I guess we could wait until December to really think about it.” Roxy gave a little pout, but knew she would still start decorating right before Thanksgiving. She didn’t really celebrate that holiday, so why not start the festivities for her favorite time of the year?
“I think you’d look good in an ugly sweater,” she said. “I think I even know what kind I’m gonna get you.” She sat back in the booth, folding her arms against her chest. Their waitress came over for their drink orders and Roxy asked for a water and a hot tea.
“I never said you would do it purposefully! I mean, we’d have to reevaluate our friendship if you did.” She raised an eyebrow, wondering if this would be the start to their conversation they had started through the network. He had said he wanted to share with her his experiences before Preya. She was always willing to listen to anyone’s story, especially someone as close as Stiles, but she had a feeling it was a delicate subject.
“Dealt with other things? I’m guessing worse than being shot by a bow and arrow.”
“Oh, I can’t wait to see what kind of ugly sweater you’ll be giving me.” Actually he was kind of scared. Those things could get pretty ugly. When the waitress came for the drink order, he ordered hot chocolate because it seriously sounded good right now.
“I know. I know. I wasn’t being serious.” He knew they would have to get to this conversation at some point. That pointed seemed to be now. “Okay, first things first, where I’m from, Beacon Hills, it’s a literal beacon for the supernatural. There wa always something crazy happening…” he started and told her the creatures that they had run across throughout the years. How people they cared about have died or took off because of events that had happened. “...And i was possessed.”
When they had spoken through the network, Roxy had gotten the impression that what Stiles had come to Preya for had been for a good reason. She had never wanted to push anyone to tell more than they were comfortable to, but she was happy Stiles felt comfortable enough around her to talk about his reason for arriving here. She sat back in the booth, her full attention on him as he began to give her the insights and details to what his life was like back at Beacon Hills.
It was a lot. With her new work assignment she had been open to and learning about more of the supernatural world, but this was a whole new level that she couldn’t believe. The way Stiles spoke of everything seemed to Roxy that this was an everyday occurrence for them, that new creatures that popped up was just a new challenge to overcome; a lot to do for a high school kid.
“You...were possessed?” she asked, almost immediately knowing they had come to his reason for moving here. She shifted in her seat, moving forward to rest her hands on the table. “You know, you don’t really have to tell me if you don’t want to. I won’t push for it.”
“Yeah,” he said with a slight nod of his head, “I was.” He didn’t really want to go into too much detail over it. But he would answer any questions that she had. If she had any. “I know that I don’t. But I’ve known you long enough and I’m tired of hiding certain details in conversations that we have. Now it won’t seem like I’m hiding anything.”
Roxy couldn’t help but smile at his response, happy to hear that he might feel they were on the same wavelength as she had felt with him. From the sounds of it, she didn’t have much to hide from him, her life was an open book. The only thing she was currently keeping under wraps were her feelings on Preya. “Well, if you don’t want to talk about them now, at least you have the option to tell me as they come up, yeah?” They had had a nice afternoon and he had already told her so much; she didn’t want to push for what was probably the more uncomfortable part of the conversation.
“And I never thought you were hiding something. Everyone’s here for a reason. I’m always curious but know that it’s not something you can rush like that.”
Stiles was glad that Roxy would be fine he stopped talking about the things that had happened back at home. He still felt kind of bad about the Nogitsune, but it was the events after that that made him ditch Beacon Hills. “Yeah.” It was enough, for now. He didn’t want to bring them down not after the fun that they had.
“I still wanted to tell you.” People were starting to show up, things were being said, he would rather tell Roxy instead of her seeing it from anyone especially if anyone said about anything about him. “I’m done. For now.”
Roxy smiled and reached across the table, taking his hand and giving it a squeeze. “And you can. But you’ve told me a lot about yourself and your life before Preya. I can imagine it wasn’t easy and it wasn’t even the worse. So when you’re ready for part two, I’ll be ready.” She grinned, taking her hand back as the waitress came back over with their drinks.
