The train to Ravenmoore didn’t take too long, though Tyler had been impatient the whole time. It wasn’t going to do any good living so far away from Caroline, especially not if they were going to start a new life here. Of course, they hadn’t discussed starting a new life, not on the internet of all things, but there was no other option for what would happen. They loved each other. He and Caroline might be stuck in Preya, but at least they were stuck there together. Even if Klaus was hanging around.
He found Caroline’s address without a problem, and knocked on the door.
Caroline could hardly believe Tyler was actually here. It had been years for her since they dated, but he would always have a special place in her heart. She knew he had come from a time where they were pretty much together, on a break perhaps if it was when he left to break the sire bond. It was going to be a little awkward, that much she knew. But she was still looking forward to seeing him.
Caroline opened the door with her usual bright smile spread across her face. “Hey!” she greeted not wasting any time embracing him in a hug. She had missed Tyler.
“Hey,” Tyler said gently, returning her embrace. It hadn’t been that long since he’d last seen Caroline, but it had felt like forever. He’d left Mystic Falls thinking it would be months until the next time he got to see her face, but he knew she’d wait for him to come back. They had eternity together, after all. But he was He moved in for his ‘I’ve missed you so much’ kiss.
Tyler leaning in took Caroline by surprise. It really shouldn’t have knowing the time he just came from. She had just been so caught up in the excitement of seeing him again she hadn’t really thought about what he was probably expecting of her.
“Tyler,” she said softly instead of letting her lips meet his. Her hands fell to her sides. She wasn’t exactly sure what to say or how to explain this. “I’ve been here a long time,” she said instead. It was true, and it beat telling him that they had also been broken up for a while back home too.
Tyler pulled back, a little confused. This was… really not the reaction he’d been expecting. “How long have you been here?” Tyler asked. He had thought that she couldn’t have been here for much longer than a year, if that, but for all he knew it could have been ten or fifty years.
“Almost a year,” Caroline replied backing into her apartment, leading Tyler inside. Technically it was about eleven months, but close enough. “Do you want a drink?” she was already making her way towards the kitchen area, pulling glasses out of the cabinet.
No, he was still confused. “I’m surprised you had to ask,” he said, attempting a bit of a joke but though it fell a little flat. Drinking was just what happened in Mystic Falls, especially if someone was a vampire. Or a werewolf. Or friends with vampires or werewolves. “Is everything okay?” he asked after a moment.
“Yeah,” Caroline said handing Tyler a glass, bringing her over to the coffee table and setting it down. “It's really good to see you again,” she said as she took a seat on the couch motioning for him to do the same. “I've missed you,” and she really had. Even if she didn't have the best last memory of him before she left.
Tyler sat down next to her, not touching her but still pretty close. “I missed you too. Though, not for as long.” It had only been a few days since he's left Caroline back in Mystic Falls. For all the weirdness he'd had to adjust to over the last couple of years, it was possible that this was the weirdest. He knocked back the entirety of his drink, and set the glass down on the coffee table. “So, what have you been up to for the last year?”
Caroline raised a brow as Tyler downed his drink. “Thirsty?” she teased although she couldn’t really blame him. Preya was a lot to take in. When she arrived she had no one, but she also couldn’t really imagine showing up thinking she was dating someone when they didn’t have the same belief. “I started my own event planning business,” she told him beaming. She was quite proud of herself for it. “So mostly that. And then spending time with Klaus and his daughter.” It wasn’t like she wanted to keep that from him.
Tyler had about to tease Caroline about her event planning - all that organization, she must be in heaven - when the rest of what she said sunk in, and he stopped for a moment, mouth hanging slightly open. Where did he even start with that? Why was Caroline spending any time at all with Klaus? Sure, he might have been the only person she knew from Mystic Falls for a while, but if that was Tyler’s only option, he would have made some new friends fast.
But even that wasn’t as strange as… “Klaus has a what?” he asked. He had to have misunderstood her. It was physically impossible for Klaus to have a daughter. Unless she was also 1000 years old and he’d been keeping her secret from them. Or maybe a vampire he’d turned that was sired in the creepiest possible way?
“A daughter. Hope,” Caroline confirmed. How to explain this though? First she got up and poured Tyler another drink. He was going to need it. “I come from a different time than you. Awhile after you broke the sire bond. So does Klaus,” she paused to take a sip of her own drink. “Basically because of the hybrid thing he was able to get a werewolf pregnant.” She almost said Hayley, but she was pretty sure Tyler didn’t even know her yet. “So, yeah. That happened.”
That… really was a lot to take in. “You might as well just bring that bottle over here,” Tyler said, taking his glass from Caroline. “So he actually knocked someone up. With his 1000-year-old sperm?” Tyer asked, still not entirely believing it. Was this an Original hybrid thing, or did it mean that Tyler could get someone pregnant. Though, that was a question that wasn’t really worth considering, seeing as Caroline couldn’t get pregnant anyway.
“Basically,” Caroline replied taking Tyler’s advice and grabbing the bottle. “So she’s here. Having a kid changed him I think. Like I said, he’s different. But I’m sure you don’t want to talk about Klaus.”
Part of Tyler did want to talk about Klaus. But he also didn’t want to ruin his evening with Caroline by doing so, so he swallowed back any further remarks. “Yeah, you’re right,” he said. “I’d rather talk about you.” And then after a moment. “Why did you come here anyway?” he asked.
With Tyler’s question her face fell. It wasn’t something she particularly liked talking about or thinking about. Hence the move to Preya. But it was only fair that he knew why she came. She knew what made him choose Preya after all. “My mom died.”
“Liz?” Tyler asked, genuinely surprised. She and Tyler’s mom had always been friends, and it was weird to think of a world where Sheriff Forbes wasn’t… well, the Sheriff. He wanted to ask who had done it, but the look on Caroline’s face made him hold back on the question. “I’m sorry,” he said, moving to wrap a comforting arm around her shoulders, not really knowing what else he could do or say.
“Yes,” Caroline confirmed since that was indeed her mother’s name. A few tears slid from her eyes. She still missed her mom more than anything. They didn’t always have the best relationship. Especially when her mom first found out she was a vampire. But they had always been close, closer than ever by the time she passed. “It’s not your fault,” she quickly wiped the tears away forcing a smile on her face. “I’m glad you’re here.”
Tyler smiled softly at her. He might not entirely understand why Caroline hadn’t given him the welcome he’d been expecting, but he did understand that she didn’t need him harping on her about it, especially not with all of this. He remembered their rocky relationship, especially when Caroline had first come out as a vampire, but he also knew how far Caroline and Liz’s relationship had come on the road to repair, and he couldn’t imagine what she must have been going through. What she needed was a little space to work it figure things out again, and Tyler would give it to her. “Whenever you need me, I’ll always be here, Care,” he assured her, giving her shoulders a squeeze.
“Thanks Tyler,” Caroline gave him a genuine smile. “Same goes for you.” And she meant it. She had been in Preya for awhile now, she was more than willing to help Tyler out. “Enough of that. Let’s drink.”
