Roxy wasn’t good when it came to matters of the heart, but she still tried to be supportive of Stiles. He seemed like he wanted to just get over the matter and she didn’t blame him; she could imagine after something like that you didn’t really want to think about it...or if you did, you’d just want to be on your own. As Roxy had never had her heart broken (or a boyfriend for that matter), she could only infer everything. Stiles was such a jokester; light-hearted and able to make anyone smile. She wanted to try and do the same for him, even if it wasn’t her forte. She had felt successful with the teddy bear and hoped the dinner tonight would continue to make him smile. She pulled up around 6 pm and sat in her car, texting him to say she was there. As she didn’t know the person he was staying with, she didn’t want to bump into the trouble of potential small talk or awkwardness. Hey, outside She turned off her phone and looked around, waiting for Stiles to come out. Stiles was glad that he would get to hang out with Roxy again tonight. He had liked it when they hung out at the rally, but that was a whole different atmosphere. Especially since Roxy was on the job and he was just around to keep her company. Dinner, though, that was going to be different. And it was another distraction to forget about his breakup with Malia. He jumped up when he saw the message on his phone. Roxy could have come to the door, but he didn't question it much. Instead, he texted back with coming and then headed out the door. Once he was in the car, he looked over to Roxy, smiling and said, "Hey. Didn't feel like getting out of the car?" “Nah, I didn’t wanna intrude on your friend's hospitality.” Roxy glanced in her mirrors and pulled out before glancing at her friend and grinning. “Besides, I figured this would be faster. Hungry?” "Oh, I would say Cora wouldn't have minded if you came to the door. But it's Cora. She can be unpredictable sometimes." So, I was probably good that Roxy had just texted him her arrival. "It was faster and yes, I'm starving. I could probably eat a horse. Not that I would, but, yeah..." He looked over at her. "Do anything interesting today?" She raised an eyebrow at him. “Unpredictable?” Maybe she had made the right choice in not going in. “Are you saying I was right?” She asked, giving him a silly surprised face in reference to the faster choice. “Please mark that down in our tally. Roxy is right: 2. Stiles is right: 0.” Of course, the first point went to Roxy on being correct about how to eat an Oreo. Turning down a street, Roxy shook her head. “Nothing really. With nothing happening at the rally, we’re kind of just sitting and finishing up some paperwork. Had a call out to the park for a disorderly, but it wasn’t a big deal. “How about you? How was school today?” "Yeah, a little bit." Maybe that was what intrigued him about Cora. "I...yeah, I guess, but, hey wait a minute there. Where did that first point come from? There can be no Roxy: 2 and Stiles: 0 if I don't even know where the first point came from." Stiles listened "So, it was a boring kind of day the. Nothing wrong with those, I guess." At least it meant nobody was going crazy and trying to kill anyone or break into anything. He shrugged his shoulders at her question about school. "Boring. I can't wait for it to end. I wonder if there's a test that I can take that'll say hey, I don't need school anymore, let me just graduate already." “The Oreo’s! I thought we both agreed I was right!” She smirked, knowing he wouldn’t let her win that battle. This one was going to have to stay an ‘agree to disagree’ moment. But it was still fun to tease him about. Roxy laughed, thankful for his way to turn [a/n hard/easy] day into something better. She grinned as she listened to his anxious answer of high school. Her own secondary education had been less than memorable; it was just something to get through to move on to the next thing. It was like he was echoing her sentiments when she younger. “Less than a year away and you’re done. You’ll be able to make it. Besides, don’t you guys have things you guys do during your last year? Prom and homecoming, yeah?” Stiles was such a social guy she was sure he would be involved with all the activities at his school. "What?" he turned as much as he could in his seat so that he could look at Roxy fully. "No. Never!" He said with a shake of his head and a look on his face that said that he would never agree with her when it came to the Oreo eating. He sat back again and looked out the window, watching as the scenery passed on by. "Yeah, there's Prom and everything. I guess I'm not really thinking about any of those things since it'll just remind me that I no longer have a girlfriend." He looked away and over at Roxy. "Besides, I never realized how boring high school was until I went to this one." It wasn't like how it was back at home. Something was usually happening whether they were in school or not. And, of course, he was on the lacrosse team back home too. Not here. Never bothered to try. "Did you do all of that stuff when you went to school?" She laughed and held up her hands on the steering wheel. “Alright, alright, that one is a draw. Roxy: 1 Stiles: 0 then.” She looked at him to say ‘that’s fair, right?’ She cringed when she realized she had brought up the one thing she had told herself not to do and she gave him an apologetic look. “Right, sorry,” she said, feeling terrible. She was rubbish at this. “Well, what do you want to do to make it not so boring? You could try out for a sport or something. Go for a club maybe?” She glanced at him, trying to think what he would like. “You played a sport before, right?” She thought that sounded vaguely familiar. She shook her head. “Not really. I went to one dance and it was only because my mum forced me. I’m not really the dancing type. But I was apart of student government. Always the damn secretary, but it was fun.” She hated how it was always the girl who went for, and got, the secretary position. She had wanted to go for President, but Donnie had been the shoe in. Whatever, she had been able to move onto a secret spy group and he was left at a dead end retail job. “I did archery and track, but it was more for personal growth than for fun.” "Fair enough," he told with, laughing a bit himself. "It's okay." He knew that she wasn't trying to make him feel bad. So, he was okay with the slip-up. "Honestly, I don't know." If he had any sort of idea, he'd do it, but right now he was blanking. "Yeah," he replied with a small nod of his head, "lacrosse. I wasn't the best at it, but it was fun. Especially with Scott there..." And that was just something else that would bring him down. He didn't need to think about Scott either. He lost his best friend. Something he always feared. It was why he left Beacon Hills and came to Preya. Well, it was the last straw, mostly. "Your mom forced you to a dance? Why would she do that for?" He couldn't imagine being forced to a dance. That wouldn't make it fun. "Archery and track. Nice combination there. Hey, could you run the track and shoot a bow and arrow at the same time?" He was grinning her way when he asked. Yes, he was kind of being an ass when he asked, but he wanted to see what she'd say. And there was strike two. Roxy glanced over at him as he trailed off and realized she made him think about his life before Preya. Man you really have this support thing down pact. Smooth. “Hey,” she said, showing him a smile. “Being bored can be alright. Or just a good excuse to call up your friends and hang out. Did you ever find a theme park here?” Roxy made a face and nodded her head. “Yeah, something about being a proper girl and going to this dance. I had a miserable time.” She realized she wasn't really selling the dances in case Stiles changed his mind later on. “Er, but I guess it's good for...social learning?” That was kind of true...Roxy had a good time people watching at hers. She rolled her eyes as if he had just asked the stupidest question. “No, it's dangerous to run and shoot an arrow. It's better to have handguns or knives if you're on foot. I can ride a horse and shoot an arrow though.” Roxy bringing up the theme park had made him perk up. He had almost forgotten that they had even spoken about it the other day. "Oh yeah! I looked. There's one in Ravenmoore. It's called Wild World. We should go." There was no point in looking it up and not going. They definitely had to go now. "If I were there, you would have had a ball. None of this misery business." It wasn't like he hadn't been to one back at home. Of course, the night ended badly. But that was normal. At least for himself and his friends. "Is it good for that?" The eye rolling just made him grin even more. "Oh yeah? See, how is that not dangerous too? The horse could be like, screw you and do something while you have a bow and arrow in your hand." “Really? We actually have one?” How could Roxy not have known that there was a theme park here? She glanced at Stiles and was surprised at how much he seemed to perk up again it. She made a face but nodded her head. “I guess I will. How many roller coasters do I have to go on?” Really, she would have gone any amount Stiles wanted, but she was hoping he would be kind to her. She laughed, pulling into the diner parking lot. “Yeah, I’m sure I would actually. But I wasn’t lucky enough to have someone cool like you while I was in school. That’s why we’re making up for lost time now.” She unbuckled and got out of the car, locking the doors after them. “And sure? Why not? Even if you don’t have a good time with your friends, think of the opportunities you could have to make new friends.” Yeah, that was a positive spin on it. They walked in and got their seats, Roxy opening the menu and scanning it. She had been here a few times, but wasn’t too familiar with the menu. “Well, you hope that your horse is durable and reliable; that it won’t make the mistake of tripping up over its feet to make you fall and hurt yourself. While running, you pose the threat of stepping on something and hurting yourself or giving your position away.” She glanced at him over the menu. “Plus, whenever you had to shoot you’d have to stop and either lose ground or allow the pursuers to catch up to you.” Her eyes shot back down to scan the menu. “Neither are a good situation.” "Yeah! We do. I would pull it up on my phone and show you, but I don't want you killing us." He would just have to show her later when she wasn't busy driving. "Hmm, at least three of them." He would've said all of them, but he knew that she didn't like roller coasters very much, so he didn't want to torture her too much. "Well, you have me now." Once she parked, he climbed out of the car and shut the door. He followed Roxy inside and it wasn't long before they were sitting at a table and looking over the menu. He knew what they had, but he wasn't totally sure what he was in the mood for. Well, except for the curly fries. Those were a must. "Horses are animals. They can be unpredictable. So, I say if you can shoot on a horse, you can run with a bow too." Not that he would ever try any of that. He didn't know how to ride a horse and he didn't know how to shoot a bow and arrow. He couldn't even hold a gun without fumbling and dropping it. "What are you going to get?" Roxy couldn’t help but grin at his sentiment. How was it that she was suppose to be making him feel better, but he was showering her with compliments and niceties? “Thanks kid,” she kicked his foot underneath the table. “And you’ve got me.” She started to laugh. “Should we start singing now?” Music was another thing Roxy was not very good at so she hoped he said no. Maybe it was just a rhythmical thing for her... “If you decide you want to try and do it, just make sure you have a medic with you. I wouldn’t recommend it.” She folded her menu down. “Have you ever tried archery before? I’d be happy to show you if you were.” It wasn’t very practical now, but damn impressive. Besides, weren’t the bow and arrow coming back into cultural interest? Hawkeye, Katniss, that Scottish girl from the Disney movie… “Well you said the curly fries were good, so those. But probably just a burger. Why? Do you recommend anything?” "Hey!" He jumped when she kicked him under the table. "Just because you're a girl that doesn't mean I won't use violence to get you back." He looked around the table real fast before he grabbed one of the jelly packets and chucked it at her. "Um, not unless you want us to get kicked out of here for making people's' ears bleed." He shook his head at her question. "Nope, never tried it before. That was a friend of mine's thing." He looked at her eyebrow raising. "You want to teach me? You might change your mind five minutes into it." He looked down at his menu again but looked up when she asked if he would recommend anything. "The burgers are good. If you're in a breakfast mood, though, I'd definitely recommend the Belgian waffle," he finished saying just as the waitress showed up. “You’re the one who’s gonna get us kicked out!” Roxy ducked the flying jelly, peeking behind her to make sure it didn’t hit the customer behind her. “It was meant as a loving gesture, not to start something!” She couldn’t help but kick him again. “That was for throwing the jelly at me.” She opened her menu up again to review her choices. Breakfast or curly fries? Curly fries or breakfast? “I’m a pretty good teacher. I think I could do it. And if you get bored, we’ll try something else.” Sounded interesting to have a friend able to use a bow and arrow as that wasn’t a popular weapon of choice. Many thought it too archaic compared to the more modern handgun. She waved her hand at Stiles to indicate he should go first, her eyes quickly scanning. Nope, he raved so much about those curly fries, that’s definitely what she wanted. When it was her turn, she folded her menu and ordered a cheeseburger with the curly fries with a pop to drink. Why not? Today could be a cheat day. After the waitress took their order and menus, Roxy folded her hands on the table. “So now I have to ask you the most important question.” She framed her face to look serious. “What are you dressing up as for Halloween?” "Not me," he told her with an innocent look. He looked the other way when the packet went to the next table. Nope, he didn't do it. He also saw nothing. He turned his attention back to Roxy. "Oooh, okay, well," he kicked her shin, "I love you too." If he could sit Indian style in this damn booth he would but it was too awkward. "I won't get bored. So, yeah, let's do this. Teach me." He wasn't used to somebody wanting to teach him how to use any type of weapon. Usually, he just got a look that said, hell no, you're not getting a weapon. It's why he stuck to his metal baseball bat whenever he needed a weapon. His attention went from the waitress to Roxy and to the waitress again when Roxy motioned that he could go first. And he did. He ordered a patty melt, curly fries, root beer and a side of ranch dressing. When he was finished he looked to Roxy. It was her turn. Once the waitress was gone, his attention went right back to Roxy. "What is this important question?" He was almost afraid to know what it could be. And then she finally asked it. Halloween was coming up. He totally forgot about that. "I have no idea. It's been awhile since I dressed up. Are you dressing up?" “So that leaves,” she held up her hand to tick everything off their to do list. “Ice skating, theme park...archery lesson?” She frowned, thinking. “Wasn’t there another one? I thought there was…” She couldn’t remember now though and hoped she wouldn’t forget the others. “Well, three’s still a pretty big amount. Hopefully we’ll be able to find the time for it. Oh...did I tell you I think I’m going to change to the night shift? It might be rough for a couple days, but hopefully I’ll get a routine down.” And that they still had time to hang out. Roxy figured she’d be sleeping while most people were up, but she didn’t think it would be the whole day. Hopefully she’d still be able to find as much time as she had now. “I dunno, it’s been awhile since I dressed up, but it could be fun! I’m sure Preya will be doing some sort of Halloween celebration. Maybe I’ll get the lucky draw and not have to work.” She tilted her head to look at him. “I think you’d make a good Harry Potter.” Had they mentioned anything? Stiles had to think about it for a moment. Ice skating and the theme park were the two things he definitely remembered. And now, of course, lessons were added into the mix. "I think you got it all. I think we're going to be busy for a while." Unless they came up with more things to do, which he was sure that they would do. "No, you hadn't told me before. So, nights, huh? Did you ask for it or are they making you do it?" Roxy probably wasn't wrong. It seemed like there was always some kind of event going on whenever a holiday rolled around. "Harry Potter, seriously? Maybe I'll just cut two holes in a sheet and call it a day." He wasn't being totally serious. Maybe he'll actually figure out something good. He had a while to think. "But hey, fingers crossed that you don't have to work that day. Or I should say us. But you'll end up dealing with more than I would if you did have to work that day." “We can write it all down later. Just...text me and remind me to.” Roxy, sadly, had a terrible memory. If she didn’t keep a detailed list of things, she wouldn’t remember to do any of it. She was very much a in the moment sort of person and everything else was pushed to the back of her mind. “It’s actually kind of a promotion,” she said, just a bit of pride in her voice. She had been tossing the idea over in her mind after her conversation with Selene and she found she was actually quite pleased to have been noticed and offered the role. “A better crew with a supervisor that holds her officers to the highest standard. It’s nice to have something to strive for.” She let the unspoken bit linger in the air, as if to say ‘what else do we have to do here?’ She laughed at his suggestion for a ghost. “C’mon, have you looked in the mirror? You’d make a great Harry. But if you wanna go incognito, I guess a sheet is the best costume for that.” Halloween. The one holiday Roxy enjoyed and loathed at the same time. For some reason it brought out the most mischievous side to people and it kept the department busy. “Keep those fingers crossed, but I have a feeling I will...it’ll probably be an all hands on deck. If I’m lucky, I might just get off early, but…” Another shrug as the waitress brought over their drinks. “Yeah, you get to just listen in to all the fun that’s going on that night.” She grinned, giving him a hard time. Stiles wouldn't wait until later. He grabbed his phone out of his pants pocket and texted Roxy the reminder. If he didn't do it now, he would probably forget himself. "Done." He smiled at her and put his phone away. "Well, hey, congrats then if it's a promotion." From everything she said, it sounded like a pretty good deal except for the whole switching to nights thing. "Good luck with the step up." He tried to see why Roxy would think he would look good as Harry Potter and, nope, he just didn't see it in his head. "I don't see it, but hey, if you're trying to force me to be Harry Potter you should be sexy Hermione then." He put both hands up and crossed his fingers. "Fingers crossed," he said, smiling. He thanked the waitress when she dropped off their drinks. "I do get to listen to all of the fun going on out in the streets. And you'll get to be in it. If you have to work." Roxy laughed, but knew that was the best way for them to remember the things they had talked about. “Thanks,” she said, ignoring the ding that went off from her phone. Now she’d just have to remember to put it in her calendar...but she was sure she would, especially if she didn’t check her phone now. “Thanks,” she said again, with a smile. “Do you do any night shifts?” Not that it mattered; it was very rarely that they heard dispatch from another region; only if they were in need of assistance and (so far) things had been going pretty well that it wasn’t needed. The only time she remembered being called to a different division was anytime the rebels were involved; sometimes for safety, sometimes for caution. She rolled her eyes at his suggestion. “Or maybe just plain, regular Hermione? If I did sexy Hermione, would you do a sexy Harry?” She raised an eyebrow at him, daring him to challenge. Of course Halloween had to bring out the “sexy” side to everything. She had seen some of the most ridiculous outfits last year and she was sure this year wouldn’t be any different. “Yeah, sometimes it’s not that great to be apart of it. You just get a lot of weird people that you think to yourself…’why am I putting up with this?’” She took a drink of her pop and wrinkled her nose as the bubbles came up too fast; she wasn’t use to drinking it as she usually stuck with water. But this was a special night out with Stiles, so why not go all out? “If you’re not working, what do you think you’ll do? For Halloween that is.” “Anytime,” he said with a smile of his own. “Do you mean like, graveyard? I’ve done some, but I can’t do that when I’m in school.” He didn’t want to imagine doing a late night shift like that and then having to go to school. He would end up falling asleep in class. “Fine, fine, or regular Hermione,” he said with a dramatic sigh. “I’m almost afraid to ask, but my curiosity always gets the best of me. How in the hell would sexy Harry Potter look?” He was already getting images in his head that he did not want. “Isn’t that in any kind of situation?” He glanced around for a moment, smirking when he saw Roxy wrinkling her nose. “What’s with the face?” He thought about the question for a moment. What would he do? He really wasn’t sure. “I don’t know. Pass out candy and watch horrible horror movies?” He wasn’t even sure where he would be living by then. “What about you? What are you going to do if you don’t have to work?” he asked just as their food was brought to them. “Well, I’ll make sure to go over the radio if I hear your voice since it’s such a rarity.” She gave a small grin, remembering late night study sessions and how they didn’t really work when you didn’t have sleep for the exam the next day. “A robe and some Gryffindor boxers.” Roxy raised her eyebrows as she tried another sip of her drink. She thought about it and realized he was right. There were very few instances where things were actually normal. “Sorry, bubble tickle.” She rubbed her nose and grinned. “Probably the same thing I do every night. Work out, eat dinner, watch some telly and go to bed.” Yes, Roxy lived a very exciting life. “Nothing too exciting.” "Hearing you would just make my night. If I ever get stuck with such a shift." Which he hoped that he didn't. He laughed. "Okay, I was thinking hot pants for some reason. But, let's not do the sexy anybodys." Halloween was supposed to be for ghosts and demons and gore, but it somehow got turned into the one night everyone dresses in the skimpest outfits ever. "That sounds like the dullest Halloween ever." He grabbed a curly fry and shoved it into his mouth. "You should come over and we can scare the kids or something." She couldn’t help but laugh, picturing the two of them jumping out at innocent, non suspecting kids and shook her head. “I don’t know if I could do that, especially to the little ones.” She chewed a few of her own fries, thinking. “But I’d be down for a movie night or something.” She glanced at him, tilting her head and pointing a fry at him. “You sure your school isn’t doing a dance or something? I feel like Halloween is a popular time for high schoolers.” It seemed like a good idea. Isn't that what Halloween was for? To scare the snot out of little kids. "It could be fun!" But if she didn't want to do it, he wouldn't force her to. "I'm all for a movie marathon. Bad horror movies, popcorn, and tons of candy." It sounded like a good night to him. "Hm, yeah, I'm sure. They'll probably let us wear our costumes to school the day of, but that's about it." “I think you should still consider to do Harry Potter for school. A regular Harry Potter,” she said with a grin. But she found herself hoping that she would be off for Halloween so they could have a fun evening in. “Well, just let me know and it could be something we add to our to do list. Which...text me and remind me to put the list in my calendar when I get home.” He shook his head. “I’ll think about it…” He probably wouldn’t dress up, but he figured Roxy might stop with the Harry Potter thing if he said that he’ll think about it. “I will do both.” |
