"Stereotyping. You are probably correct. My apologies."
Selene led the way behind the desk to the rear street-level door of the station. "My Toyota pickup is rather distinctive so I borrowed an unmarked sedan from the motor pool. It will be faster for us to drive to the edge of the area I want to patrol tonight."
It was almost halfway across town to the edge of the commercial district where there were several trendy nightclubs and well-known restaurants. It was still early, so she had no trouble finding a parking spot in a club lot to back the nondescript car into. When they got out of the car she waved to the club doorman, who waved back. "He knows I will be in the neighborhood tonight if they have any trouble they can't handle. It can be enough to just be seen some nights to make people feel safer."
There was an alley across the street that ran back behind a much taller office building. The darkness didn't bother Selene, to her enhanced eyesight it may as well have been daylight. For her, it was an easy 15-foot straight up to take hold of a fire escape ladder and ride it against the counterweight down to the ground. "One short climb, ten flights of stairs, and we can get a look around and a feel for what the night might bring." She started the climb to the roof, motioning for Momo to follow.
The roof of the building was an ideal vantage point for a part of the city that never did really sleep. She waved at hand at where the last signs of daylight were fading from the sky. "The city has a pulse, a heartbeat. Certain smells and sounds. Once you Lear them, it is just like being a hunter in the deep woods. They will tell you when things are going wrong. It is different from the daytime pulse, but just as distinctive. Take a few minutes to orient yourself, see if you can catch a hint of that pulse."
