Selene shrugged and handed the liability release forms to Momo for her to read and sign. " And my thanks to you for making the effort to find out what Police work really is. It is definitely not rushing in to save the day, except for rare exceptions. It is much more being out there every night, learning the people of your district, their comings and goings, their everyday routines. Developing a feel, learning the subtle clues that will tell you when things are not right. I frequently use the metaphor of sheep dogs, guarding the flock. Being the reassuring presence, but also being ready to go head to head if wolves do come after the flock."
She laughed softly. "What I am wearing. Kevlar and other synthetic threads. Titanium wire, strategically placed ceramic plates. Even magical reinforcing courtesy of my wizard. Plan for the worst, hope for the best."
"I know you think most of us are old, and have no clue about young heroes. And in some ways, you are probably correct. But many of us have been out in the real world for longer than you have been alive. We have seen the young and gifted and enthusiastic die out there on the mean streets. And you and the other young heroes are as much a part of those we are sworn to protect as any of the other citizens out there. And that, I believe, is the primary difference between being a police officer and a hero. We have given our word to put your lives and well-being ahead of our own."
She smiled. "Enough lecture for now. Ready to go walk a beat and meet some people?"
