Richard laughed softly. "A hundred and a half years, young sir. Electric lights everywhere. Parts of many cities and towns are bright as day. Even the highways. All the lights on cars make a ribbon of light you can follow in the dark. Yes, we use concealment and misdirection enchantments, just in case, but speed and running dark are a big help too." He nodded. "Bluebottle's big sellers were our Everyday line, for the regular rider, and the Two-Plus, a two-seater with room for a child or two. We made solid brooms, if expensive, and the warranty helped us sell quite a few of them. If it broke - not just worn out with age, mind you - we would fix it for free. Worn out brooms would get a very low cost refurbishment. Appealed to most sensible riders; we left the Quidditch pitch to other companies, and sold Factory Racers to a different sort of market entirely. To put things in perspective, it sells for say, oh, about what a good landau and matched four-in-hand sells for in your day. Mostly to the gentleman racer, and serious competitors looking to break into the broom racing circuit."
"Something I learned from my grandfather when I was just starting into buying and remodeling properties. Anything exposed to magic for any length of time absorbs a certain amount of it. There are ways to increase, amplify that. With a good enough reservoir of magic, you can create certain enchantments in the very fabric of a building, simple routines that respond to certain commands. For example, by now, the dishes from our lunch will have been washed and put where they belong, leftovers dealt with, because that is one of the routines I spelled into the kitchen. Simple household magic, just done with prior planning rather than direct supervision. In the same fashion, I have an enchantment already set up to deliver tea to my workshop along with suitable snacks from the pantry. You may or may not have noticed the wards I've set into my land and buildings, they are fairly subtle at this level, but because they are built into the very fabric of the place. I knew as soon as you crossed over the perimeter, even though you were in the air at the time, and I was able to follow you all the way to the house. It helps that the property adjoins Everdale, which leaks quite a bit of magic. So, no elves, and currently no domestic staff, although I will most likely be hiring some, if you happen to run across anyone you think would be suitable. Shall I pour? Do try the chocolate chip - cookies, they call them here - biscuits, and take more of a look at the workshop if you like."
