Who: Cassiopeia Black and Richard Summerby
What: Meeting for afternoon tea
When: Wednesday afternoon
Where: Cassi's home
Cassiopeia was never fully comfortable with social entertaining. She was competent at it, of course, and it was very rare that she didn't enjoy the company of her guests, but something about it always troubled her. It reminded her, she supposed, of the life of domesticity which she had consciously avoided through her own choices in life. It reminded her of her mother, and of Irma, whom she couldn't help but pity and despise in equal measure. Small wonder that as a child she had quickly decided that such a life wasn't for her.
Still, she played her part well enough, and she was looking forward to meeting Richard Summerby in person. Even if he'd been a dreadful bore, she'd have felt responsible for welcoming him to Preya's magical community, such as it was. That he seemed both interesting and well-travelled improved the prospect of afternoon tea together immensely. No doubt it would be a little awkward whether the topic of the future was discussed or avoided, but that just couldn't be helped, and at least she had the knowledge Mr Jarvis had decided to share with her.
She had set the elves to work early that morning, and the house was practically immaculate. It was at the end of a narrow, winding little lane in Everdale, and while relatively modest by the standards of the Black family in Britain, it was more than large enough for Cassi's purposes, and had an old-fashioned charm. An approaching wizard might have noticed an intricate web of protective charms woven about it, protecting it from intruders and unwanted visitors.
