Veronica wasn’t sure about this Dean, character. However it was part of her job to be welcoming to newcomers. Whether they were in her region or not. However, Dean was one of the ones that was. Getting a burger with him wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
The blonde arrived at Slapjack’s Diner in jeans, a dark green t-shirt and her leather jacket. Yes, she was a council member but Veronica was much more of a fan of the causal look. She wasn’t about to change who she was based on her career. Besides when the situation called for her to dress up, she did.
Always punctual she arrived before her dining companion. Veronica got them a booth, ordering herself a chocolate milkshake as she waited.
Unfortunately or not for Dean, he still didn’t know where the hell he was going. Saying he didn’t know the diner actually hadn’t been a lie, even if he was prone to it out of habit. Still, he thought he’d done decent enough in finding the place, even making sure he wasn’t completely gross from work or anything of the sort, even if there was probably an eternal car sort of smell to him just from his car alone.
He’d seen enough of her from their interactions to fancy an educated guess once he made it inside and after a quick grin to the woman behind the counter he headed over to the blonde, stepping around and slipping into the other side of the booth.
“This place is a little tucked away. Normally, I can spot a dive from a mile away.” He nodded, smiling at her before looking around, just the air of the place giving a strange sort of comfort. “So...chocolate?” Another smile and he was waving at one of the waitresses so he could get himself a drink. “Those good here, too?”
“No problem,” Veronica replied. It had been years since she had arrived in Preya, but she still remembered how new and confusing it had all been. “Glad you found it,” Veronica even gave him a small smile. She wasn’t exactly the warm and fuzzy smiling type, but she could manage a small one on occasion.
“Oh yeah,” she answered taking a long sip from her milkshake to emphasize it. “Who doesn’t love a milkshake?” And it went perfect with a burger and fries. Especially the fries.
“Me, too.” Dean admitted, sitting up straight to give the place a real look over. “Smells amazing.” Really, it smelled like every other small town diner that he’d ever been in. A little greasy, but overall clean, with something sweet lingering from somewhere. He smiled and looked down at the menu, leaning on the table a little bit.
“But do they have pie?” Because, really, that was what was most important to him. If it was good, he’d probably want to take home a whole thing if they’d let him. He might not have felt like eating the best since he’d arrived, but pie was definitely something he wouldn’t be able to say no to, even if nothing else sounded appealing.
“So, how long you been here?” He asked, looking up once he realized he was getting a burger and which burger specifically, deciding he didn’t really need to look at anything else this trip.
Even if it did smell like every other diner it was still an amazing smell. Well if you liked the smell of melted cheese on greasy burgers and salty fries.
"Of course they have pie," Veronica replied with a smirk. What diner in their right mind wouldn't serve pie? As for Veronica? She was going to go for a bacon cheeseburger and of course fries. Which is exactly what she ordered when the waitress came by, waiting for Dean to order before answering his question.
"I've been here for eight, almost nine years now." How time flew. She had made quite the life for herself in Preya, but she still remembered Neptune like it was yesterday.
Dean had to give a sigh, eyes darting back to the counter just to see if they had a display. If they had multiple pies, this might be his new favorite place. It was pretty strange that it was his favorite food, yet one of the few things he didn’t learn to cook when they finally got the bunker. Maybe it was just one of those, if the ones you bought weren’t broke, why fix it, things. “I love pie.”
He smiled at the waitress when she came by, opting for the double burger that was hopefully going to be every bit as massive as he thought it might be. You couldn’t beat a diner burger, except maybe one he fixed himself, but that didn’t count when you didn’t feel like it. He gave her a wink before settling back in and folding his hands on the table for the wait.
“Wow. That long, huh? Guess this place really is a leave and never go back deal.” Then again, he’d thought that about Hell, too. Funny stories he’d never actually tell, at least not any time soon. “You get the same deal even then? Is everyone here like that, or...are babies a thing? I can’t get pregnant, right? This isn’t some alien thing? Aliens aren’t fun. No fourth kind crap for me.”
“Who doesn’t?” Veronica shot back. Okay she was smart enough to know that there were actually people out there that didn’t like pie, but still. It was pretty hard not to love. “You should try the triple berry,” if he wanted something classic at least. “The peanut butter chocolate one is great too.” But then they all were, really.
The blonde watched Dean’s exchange with the waitress, raising a brow. Clearly this guy was a flirt, a player even. Although Veronica had already assumed as much from his little introduction. “Don’t let me stop you,” she quipped. She wouldn’t even be pissed if he ended up picking up the waitress. Who was she to stop anyone from getting laid?
“The fresh start with no return deal? Yeah I got it.” It had been going on for that long. Longer even, Veronica wasn’t the first person the deal was offered to. “I have yet to see any green men,” she quipped. “But yes people can get pregnant here. If they have the right equipment.” Dean wouldn’t suddenly become pregnant.
Dean had to give her props. He’d known a few women here and there that wouldn’t even look at a pie without scrunching up their nose like it was the worst thing ever. Bodies might be temples but Dean figured his altar deserved something warm and gooey. “Yeah. Both. Both sound good.” If he could hack it, one now, and take some to go. Or more than some. He wasn’t set on anything at the moment.
For a second, Dean genuinely looked startled, probably not unlike a kid who just got caught sneaking a cookie, or something similar. “What? No.” He breathed out a laugh before reaching for his water and taking a drink. “Pretty sure she wouldn’t spare me a look seeing as I’m here with you.” Then again, that never stopped anyone when he was with Sam, and once upon a time it felt like everyone thought they were gay. “Besides. Just being friendly.” He flashed her another smile and took a drink before setting the glass back down and tucking his hand under the table to wipe any condensation off on his jeans.
“That’s great.” He nodded, somewhat belatedly realizing that he maybe should elaborate a little bit. “You know...equipment and stuff.” He figured that was vague enough, or it was something at least. “So...what about you? Got any kids or plans for maybe some?”
What was the point of living if you couldn’t enjoy pie? Or food in general for that matter. Veronica ate what she wanted when she wanted. She didn’t care about counting calories. She was who she was, take it or leave it. “Go for it,” Veronica smirked. She would never hold anyone back from eating copious amounts of pie.
Veronica just gave him a knowing look. She was good at reading people. Dean was definitely a player. It was evident in his post, and even more obvious now. She glanced back at the waitress. “Oh, I definitely think she’d spare you a look.” She didn’t buy the just being friendly line for a minute.
“No kids. No plans for any.” Veronica wasn’t exactly the maternal type. “You?” She assumed the answer was a big fat no, but still she might as well ask.
It was possibly a strange assumption to make, but Dean was pretty sure he could read people. He liked Veronica. He usually knew right off the bat who he’d want to kill and who he wouldn’t mind keeping around if he could. He supposed his chances of keeping some people around now were a lot better than they had been when he was back home. “You’re awesome.” He grinned and leaned back a little in his seat.
“Yeah?” He leaned a little to look back toward the waitress. She was his type, the sort he usually went for. Smiled a lot, pretty, nice, worked somewhere that served food. They were generally easy access to him, whether he’d admit it or not. He probably needed to not sleep with the whole town, especially since he was living here. He hadn’t when he had Lisa. Then again, he’d had Lisa. “Maybe next time.”
The question of kids wasn’t exactly the easiest to answer. He hadn’t really thought about it on the flip side. “I kind of did.” There wasn’t much point in lying about it, even if he doubted anyone would ever mention it. He wasn’t even sure if Ben was his or not, since there had been conflicting stories all around. The math was there, everyone said it, but Lisa swore he wasn’t. “Haven’t spoken to him or his mom in years. Probably for the best.”
“I know,” Veronica replied with a smirk. She was awesome, but she wasn’t humble. “It’s your first time here. You gotta experience and taste as much as you can.” Although he had plenty of time. The rest of his life. But still.
Veronica didn’t have much more to comment on with the waitress. He could hit on her tonight or next time. Made no difference to her. “Kind of?” she rose a brow. How did someone kind of have a kid? “I’m going to need a few more details.” Always the curious one.
He had to laugh, trying to keep it soft. "Hell yeah. That's the best way to view it." He had probably thought similar things at diners all across America, of course, there was a lingering feeling he might never go back again, but that wasn't the point.
Well, he had to think about it. "Yeah. Twice." That probably made him sound worse. "One of them, the mom pretty much used me as a sperm donor...the other. Well, that's just really complicated and not exactly the kind of thing you talk about over burgers."
“Looks like I’ll just have to show you where the best drinks in town are then.” Because she definitely wanted to hear those stories. However, right now burgers were calling. As if on cue the waitress that was still eyeing her dining companion brought over their orders.
"Yeah. Looks like you will." He smiled a little. That didn't sound half bad. Drinking was always better with company and if he left out some of the details, it might be a good thing to talk about some of the stuff. He grinned big as the burgers came and sat up a little bit more straight. "Awesome..."
