Lily had caused a great number of heartaches for James. Mostly when he had realized he fancied her, and she didn't return the feelings. He was about to comment on that very thing, and add that she had managed to mend it every time, when she asked her question.
"All the time," he answered easily and wrapped his arms around Lily. While in the last few weeks there had been moments of incredible joy, there had also been moments of deep reflection. Some sadness, and at a few times, just a touch of despair. Those thoughts mostly came when he thought about Harry having to grow up without him or Lily by his side. They also bubbled up when he thought of their respective other half where each had come from. Himself from where Lily was from must have been going utterly mad. And Lily where he was from... well, she was dead. "I prefer not to dwell on it, though."
