Steve could be completely wrong about the soldier thing, but he'd only been in town for a few days, and he could be forgiven if he misread that somewhere. In any case, it had worked for his captain joke in his head. Truth was, he couldn't conceive of a place without a military presence of some kind.
Peter's reaction made Steve's smile grow until he was beaming at the happy kid. At least there were no obvious shadows so far marring his personality. Maybe he'd been having a less than great day when they chatted over the network. Steve hadn't been overly concerned, but he was left with a niggling worry after Peter confessed not coping well with his not dead status. But Steve wasn't about to bring it up. At least not yet. Not when the kid was in such a good mood.
The telltale smile and body language were telltale signs. Add the blush and suddenly Steve understood quite how easily it had been for people to figure out how he felt about his best friend. He grinned and patted Peter's shoulder gently, adding a little squeeze as they walked side by side. "She sounds like it. I'm real happy for you, kid. You deserve every happiness, and you owe it to yourself to pursue it and hang on to it for as long as you can. Hopefully for good, in this case, right?"
