Steve had been haunting the perimeter of the Stark building for the better part of half an hour. It was on the way to where he was going today, and he was tempted to walk in and attempt to say hello to Tony. Things between them were complicated, let's just say. He was engaging in that internal monologue about whether to go inside or not when he spotted Peter coming his way. He gave a little salute to one of the many security cameras, complete with puppy eyes because he was fairly certain Tony's tech knew he was outside by now, before turning to say hello to Peter Parker.
He couldn't help the fond smile on his face as the sweet boy faltered. Steve had read Peter's file after he... disappeared, and he had been very sorry that he'd never gotten to know him better. He saw a lot of himself in Peter, for many reasons. The kid certainly had not deserved his fate.
"Steve is fine. Unless you've enlisted recently?" he teased. Not like Steve was formally in the armed forces any longer after the precipitous fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. He held out his hand, treating Peter like an equal, because the kid was truly a veteran now. He'd given his pound of flesh and then some, and that amounted to respect in Steve's book. Peter was no longer just a kid in a costume. He was a young hero in Steve's eyes now.
"Good to see you, kid." Steve smiled gently. "You don't mind if I call you kid, do ya? It's habit." It was hard not to call Peter kid, considering how tiny and cute he was.
