Yves listened to the tragic story unfold, feeling his own wings, hidden from view at the moment, sag as he listened, his mouth pressed in a firm line and his blue eyes fixed on Necrosis as he recounted the painful memories. He felt bad for bringing it up, but Necrosis was the only angel left, he shouldn't feel like he needed to carry that burden all on his own. Perhaps that was the ruler's way of helping him realise that.
As Necrosis wept and wrapped his wings around him, Yves yearned to wrap his arm around him in comfort, or at least pat him on the back, though him being the eldest of the angels from where he came from he was very respectful of boundaries, not wanting to touch his wing even accidentally without approval.
Instead, Yves brought his own wings out, midnight blue, silver and gold, seeming to glitter as if in starlight. They draped behind him, their true width wide enough to enfold a house, strong enough to lift a car as if it were a pebble.
"I'm sorry," he said again gently, "They're your family. I'm sure that wherever they are, wherever angels go after they die, they are at peace and they love you. Hey," in lieu of touching him, Yves nudged his wing so that he brushed a little bit of sand onto Necrosis's foot to attract his attention, "I can't imagine the pain you must be going through as the only living angel from your world. My family... there are many angels in my world, but I too have felt them die. My burden is knowing their names, naming them all when they were brought into being. I know the moment their names stop being spoken and feel the loss as if part of myself died in turn."
Yves let out a heaving sigh. "But I know it's not the same. What I do know is that with every loss, I still felt like they were with me. The ones we love never truly leave us, they're our choices, our conscience, the reason we get up in the morning, the reason we do what we do." Yves looked over at Necrosis with a gentle smile. "As heartbreaking as it is to receive such a gift from the ruler, it feels good to have part of him with you, right? That's why you keep the items, so that they're always with you."
