It was too early to go home and too late to change his mind and return to campus. Brightford University lacked one student, and he was cutting through the boardwalk to head back home. He gave the excuse he was sick, or at least that was what he was going to tell anyone who would question his early departure. As the adopted son of a councilman, he simply could not head to the arcade as he wanted, nor could he go for laps at the swim center. If he was "sick", he at least had to make it seem that way for the sake of appearance. The last thing he needed was someone calling Hanzo and informing him that Rin was swimming to his heart's content while he was "under the weather".
In all honesty, the skipping of class was not at all an act of mischief, he simply needed a break from things. With the holiday season alive and kicking within Preya, Rin was getting homesick. He found it difficult to feel festive in knowing his mother was back home, and it would be his first winter without her. Having gone to the university that morning for classes, he was overwhelmed with the decorations and the flyers for holiday events. December arrived and it vomited tinsel and cups of cheer everywhere. For some reason it just hit Rin especially hard that morning, so he ducked out to head home.
He took the light rail to the boardwalk, as it looked fairly empty and a nice place to let off steam. The shops were technically open, and he could smell hot chocolate coming from one of the small restaurants, and he was determined to find out which one. The boardwalk was vacant, probably because of the chilly weather, but Rin continued on. He wore his hoodie and a coat on top of that, well layered and prepared for the weather. After all, he did not need to actually come down with something because he was careless. It would be horrible to fake sick and get sick on the same day - and it would be a terribly powerful picture of karma.
As the winds picked up with a particularly cold breeze, Rin flipped up the hood to his sweatshirt and pushed on. The smell of hot chocolate intensified as he ducked behind a building, hoping to dodge the brutal sting of the winds. Staring ahead, he saw a row of restaurants. That narrowed it down some, one of them had to sell it, right? As he continued on, he heard feet shuffling from behind and glanced over his shoulder. "Good to know I'm not the only one crazy enough to be out here today," he said with a laugh.
