As much as he liked humans, they could be very noisy at times - so much wanting and fretting and noise for the sake of noise. The clamor of the more urban areas was fascinating in its own way, but sometimes it became too grating. Lately, at times like that, Castiel had taken to finding quieter nooks in the cities to retreat to. The animal shelter in Summerbridge was one of his favorites, though he had flown away rather suddenly more than a few times after one or another of the workers walked in on him. He didn't want to cause any trouble and he hadn't cared to listen to shouting about it, as humans were wont to do when one came in unannounced. He just wanted to sit with the animals.
Currently, Cas was sitting placidly in the center of the yard, enjoying the excitable but simple thought patterns of the dogs. Two of the mutts were snuggled up tight against his thigh on one side. A third one with only three legs was on his right, his chin resting on Castiel's knee. A year-old beagle, small for her age, was half-nestled in his lap, desperately reaching up to lick his fingers, and the rest were roughhousing around him.
Cas smiled softly at the beagle, making sure to scratch the itch he knew she couldn't quite reach. Dogs were undemanding - all they really wanted was food, playtime, and gentle hands to pet their tummies and get behind their ears. Why couldn't all creatures be so easy to please? It would save the universe a lot of trouble and pain...
That notion niggled at the bigger, darker thoughts looming at the back of his mind, threatening to break the sense of peace he was finding here. He knew he just needed to focus on what was in front of him and keep out of trouble, and everything might be okay... so Cas pushed it away, blocking it out again by focusing on the soft animal souls and the warm fur under his vessel's fingers.
