The diner that Azrael had once taken him to had become a favorite haunt whenever Will wanted to be somewhere busy yet contained. The cheerful jukebox music and low buzz of conversation was oddly soothing like the background noise of music filtering through the walls of Jonathan's room. It had been one of the first places that he introduced to El. He had hoped that it would give her the same feeling of community without being overwhelming. She seemed to enjoy it. They'd come regularly for waffles à la mode in the summer and now that school was in session it was their official study spot. Waffles were still often involved, of course, because one of Will's favorite things in the world was the way El's eyes lit up at the sight of them.
As they were ostensibly here for schoolwork Will had seated them side by side in the cushy booth furthest from the door. The closeness afforded him the ability to read what El was working on and demonstrate on his own paper if there was something she needed to be clarified. He was often impressed by how quick her mind was, however, and he suspected that eventually she would not need his help any more than he needed hers. Seeing her learning and adjusting made a flower of warm pride unfold in his chest. She was amazing for more than her psychic abilities. Every now and then he would pause to share some fascinating piece of information from the Biology textbook open before him. It was no less fun to talk about science with El than with the rest of the Party, even if she was still making up for all the years she had missed.
They had not been studying long when Will's brain locked onto some information and he paused to stare pensively out the window for a moment. The subject was a tangle of exciting knowledge and applications to darker things he avoided thinking about. He often processed this way: taking pauses to examine new input from every angle and connect it to the world outside lines of text. After mulling it over for a minute he nudged El's arm gently with his shoulder.
"I'm reading about autotrophs right now. Those are organisms--- living things--- that can create their own food using really simple stuff like light or chemicals instead of eating plants and animals. Flowers, for example, are autotrophs. It would be really cool to be able to live off sunlight but I'd rather eat what we do, wouldn't you? Imagine no Eggos."
