The situation was getting dire. Elena arrived at Preya and started to do some wandering. At first she was very excited. The start of a new adventure! And she wouldn’t be a burden to anyone anymore. She was thrilled to explore new, undiscovered territory, and maybe meet some new people.
But the hours turned, and Elena was starting to realize that she didn’t know anyone. Every human she came into contact with smelled almost too good to be true, and her hunger was growing. It was starting to control her, and she had to fight to keep from giving in and pouncing on some poor, unsuspecting soul.
Finally she had to turn away from people, walking down the emptiest streets she could find. It was starting to sink in that she may have made a huge mistake. Was she truly never going to see her friends again? She didn’t want to hurt people, but how was she going to get blood? To survive?
As usual Caroline was over booked. It was probably time to take Mr. Jarvis on full time. Her business had grown too much for her to run to every meeting. She was on her way to the florist, ordering the flowers for an anniversary party, when she spotted someone familiar. Someone she never thought she’d see again.
Caroline froze for a moment. Staring. “Elena?” she finally asked, her voice soft. God, she hoped it was Elena and not Katherine.
Vamp hearing was both a blessing and a curse. Elena often found herself overwhelmed by all the lights and sounds of the world around her. But as she was walking down the street, doing her best not to panic and lose control, her vampire ears picked up a very famliar sound. A voice, actually, saying her name. She knew that voice.
“Caroline?” Elena whispered as she turned around. Excited eyes searched the street. It only took a moment for her to lock in on the blonde. “Caroline?!” An overwhelming wash of relief and excitement hit her as she rushed forward, toward her friend.
Yeah, that was definitely Elena. She could tell the difference in the way she reacted. Even when Katherine was pretending to be Elena she didn’t get that excited. First Klaus, now Elena? Things were getting better. Although part of Caroline felt bad. It was selfish for her to want Elena here. It meant Elena could never go home again. Could never see her brother. She wasn’t thinking about that right now though, she was just excited to have her best friend back.
“Oh my god!” Caroline exclaimed wrapping her arms around Elena. “When did you get here?!” And then her face fell. If Elena was here that meant something had happened. Something bad. “Why are you here?”
Oh, thank God. Elena wrapped her arms around Caroline and hugged her tightly. She couldn't put into words how relieved she was to see her friend here. But she was also confused. Why was Caroline here? And how long had she been here?
“I've been here a few hours, maybe the day,” Elena was so hungry now she wasn't sure. “I…” the question about why she was here caught her. She'd been selfish and afraid under disguise of being selfless and brave. And now she was forced to face her decision. “I don't know, I got a text message invitation, and at the time it seemed perfect. But I'm so hungry.”
Caroline knew all about the invitations. She had obviously received one herself. She also knew it was a choice to come here. Something horribly must have happened to make Elena decide to leave Mystic Falls. What had happened after Caroline left?
Now wasn’t the time to discuss it though. Vampires needed food, blood. She remembered how stressful it was when she first arrived. Not knowing where the hospital was to compel herself some blood bags. Elena wouldn’t have to deal with that though. “Come on, I have some blood bags at my apartment.”
Now that she was explaining it to Caroline, it seemed like the most selfish thing she could have ever done. And all she wanted was to go back home and apologise to Stefan. And to Bonnie. And to find Jeremy and give him the world’s biggest hug. But she was here now, with Caroline. The only thing she could think about was getting something to eat.
“Oh, thank you,” Elena breathed out in a sigh of relief. “I was afraid I was going to hurt someone.” The questions about how Caroline got there so fast and what was going on were gone from her head as she let her blonde friend help her down the street.
“Of course,” Caroline replied before taking off at vampire speed, assuming Elena would follow. If Elena was that hungry it was probably best they got to her place as soon as possible.
Vamp speed was the best. Especially when Elena was so hungry. She followed after Caroline, unable to take her mind off anything but the blood bags at the end of their trip. This was so strange--Elena hadn’t even wrapped her head around the idea that Caroline was here. She didn’t even consider how Caroline could have gotten there before Elena. She was sure to have a lot of questions after she had a little blood running through her.
They got to her apartment in no time. Elena didn't need to be invited in since Caroline was a vampire. It was not an apartment inhabited by humans. She grabbed a bag from the freezer handing it over to Elena. “So what happened?” She asked again once Elena had some blood in her.
Elena accepted the blood bag and ripped into it. She drank for a moment, letting the blood revive her. It was very, very strange to feel this way about blood. Something that disgusted her not too long ago was now a big part of her life. After a little bit she could think again, much more clearly than before. She pulled her dark eyes up to Caroline and mulled over the question.
“Stefan gave me my daylight ring. On the way home I got this text message… it sounded perfect--a way to relieve the burden on my family and friends. I was supposed to die, I didn’t choose this. I wouldn’t have--” she cut off, then sipped from the bag again. It was in that moment she realized a question she wanted answering. “Wait, how did you get here? Did you get a text message, too?”
She had just gotten a daylight ring? Caroline knew that people could come from different times but this was just so weird. It was an Elena from her past. Of course still her best friend. Caroline remembered how much Elena didn’t want to become a vampire. How much she wanted the cure, to be human again. So yes it made sense that’s what made her come to Preya. And honestly? Part of Caroline was relieved that something horrible hadn’t happened while she was gone.
“So you just turned?” Caroline asked to clarify. This all had to be so confusing for Elena. Arriving to Preya was complicated enough as it was, but to add just becoming a vampire on top of it? “Yes I got a text message.” Months ago, or years in the future for Elena she supposed.
Elena stared at Caroline for a moment. How could her friend not know what had just happened? They’d been together over the past few days, they’d talked about things. Of course Caroline knew. But why was she making it seem like it was strange? “Yeah.” Elena said, eyebrows furrowed. “Just… a couple days ago.”
Well that explained things. Caroline figured it was best not to confuse Elena too much with the different time lines. She had enough to adjust to as it was. “Let’s get you settled and then I can give you a tour,” Caroline suggested already pulling out her phone to have Edwin take over the rest of her appointments for the day.
