Ever since Eleven had arrived on the island, she had stuck to the schedule they had been given, arriving on time for everything and taking part as much as she was able. She did not like being alone, and she was thankful to those who had reached out to her when she had arrived to speak with her and offer comfort. Still, there were a great number of things that confused her. Yoga was difficult. She kept falling over trying to replicate what the instructor was doing. She was certain that a person was not meant to bend in certain ways yet apparently they could. With practice and patience, she was sure she would be able to do the same, but her balance was terrible.
Horse riding had been scary. At first she had been pleased, excited to ride a horse for the first time. They looked so beautiful and majestic! However, the horse that had been picked out for her had responded with some fear to her presence which in turn made her recoil in tears. When brought to her, the horse reared up on its hind legs in fear and whinnied, trying to get away from her. El had spent some time hiding and crying after that, wondering if things would always be that way with her and other animals. They could sense things about her that normal humans couldn't.
Then there was the magic show. That was a bust too. She was sure she could see how some of the tricks were done. She watched and saw when things were hidden and became more familiar the more she watched. She wondered if perhaps she learned she could surprise Will with a new trick.
On Monday she had eaten waffles for breakfast, and spent time trying to replicate the coin trick in the garden before lunch. More waffles were consumed for brunch but she had picked out some strawberries to have with them. She enjoyed them but they were very tart and bitter to her. Scuba diving scared her into spending all her time on the beach alone. It reminded her too much of Papa and the tank she had been made to use to develop her ability to walk in the void. And besides, there were fish in this water! What if they too responded to her with fear? She couldn't take the risk.
Dancing lessons came next and she spent most of her time falling over again. She had to dance with the instructor when she couldn't find someone to dance with and found herself missing Mike and Will even more. Then came dinner... Remembering how cross Hopper would be with her if she didn't try to eat properly, she had a proper meal and for dessert, more waffles. She even tried to eat all the peas on her plate, knowing how proud Hopper would have been with her.
The last thing on the schedule for the day was painting in the garden. Eleven had arrived nice and early, ready to take part. Hopefully this would go better than some of the other things she had tried to participate in. She stood in the garden as the others started to arrive, looking at all the different colours of paint on offer. Will would have liked it here, she was certain of that much.
