Trace could see Caelee's point, especially when she presented it in that quiet arguing way of hers. It had always gotten through to him in a way that nothing else could. Not just from Caelee, but anyone who could argue quietly with him. When it got loud with his brothers or with their parents, he could always tune it out to some degree and not deal with it.
He closed his eyes tight as he listened to Caelee, knowing she was right. But a part of him needed to blame something or someone for what had happened to make sense. "Nothing's going to bring her back," he whispered, the words spilling out of him before he could stop them.
He opened his eyes and looked at her and said what was probably the most selfish thing she'd ever heard him say. "I just want it to stop hurting Caelee. I just want it to stop and it doesn't."
