Charles was on campus taking his last final of the semester. He couldn't be happier to have this semester over with. It had been a long, brutal term. None of his professors were what he'd describe as great let alone decent. His one professor barely even taught them anything. It was as if he expected them to already know all the material. He trudged in the direction of the book store. First order of business was to sell back his textbooks. He was never going to need them again. Charles felt confident that all of his grades were well above the minimum requirement. At first he fiddled with his phone in the long line of students who all wanted to do the same thing. When he looked up as the line started moving he noticed the girl with blonde hair just two people ahead of him was someone he knew all too well. Part of him wondered if she knew he was standing this close. It wasn't as if they had never been in the same place before. It was just painfully awkward every time. It was as if they couldn't talk anymore, not like they used to. Maybe he brought back to many memories. Maybe she just didn't want to revisit the past and that included him. It was more like they were strangers when they shared a significant amount of time together. His focus returned to the phone, at least in appearances. He wasn't really seeing or reading what was on his page. His brain was still determining whether it was better for him to leave and come back another day. Perhaps the line would progress and she would never even know he was right there. And then his phone went off. The sounds of Imperial March from Star Wars started playing. Charles froze for a moment before hastily trying to decline the call from his brother. Instead he wound up hanging up on him. That had been his ringtone for Chris for years. He just hoped she didn't hear it. Or it was possible she didn't remember it anymore. |
