She probably should have said no, or begged off on the whole idea of going out to eat after work because honestly, eating out at pretty nice restaurants in the center of the city was something she had never done except on extra special occasions, it was something she couldn't actually afford to do, and it made much more sense for her to save that money for something more practical. Like a metrocard. Or groceries. Or even the gas bill, since winter was coming and all. But then the group going had gotten onto the topic that she never hung out with them outside of work, and how despite working together for years they felt like they didn't know her at all, and she convinced herself that going out for food was just like... after work team building. She needed her employees to think she liked them to make sure things always went as smoothly as possible, right? So there she stood waiting for a table with four of her co-workers, glad that she had called her brother to let him know beforehand where she was (she'd learned what happened if she didn't already) and wondering if maybe she should have stuck by going home. What if she sucked all the fun out of it and everyone thought she was boring? She could admit it to herself, she was sort of boring. She never did anything, ever. She didn't have any fun stories to tell and she'd probably end up sitting in her seat, sipping on her soda and listening to everyone else talk for the next two hours. Oh, she sucked. |
