Kelly was still in complete shock. She wasn't sure how this could have happened. They were careful. She was on the pill. They always used condoms. They'd been having sex since they were teenagers without anything like this happening, for crying out loud! When her period had been late, she'd told herself it was a fluke. Stress or diet or.. something. She felt fine. She'd start bleeding in a few days. Then it had been even later and she'd started to feel run down and a little nauseated. It got a little harder to deny, then, with other symptoms starting to crop up. It had still taken her another week to gather her courage to have it confirmed, but she'd picked up a pregnancy test on her way home from work last night. A part of her had wanted to take it right away, but she knew they said it was better to use your first pee of the day, so she forced herself to wait. As she rolled out of bed, she fought the waves of nausea that might have been equal part nerves and morning sickness. She retrieved the test from her handbag and slipped into the bathroom. Several minutes later, she was moving back into the bedroom and crawling back into bed. Rather than going back to sleep, though, she sat there chewing at her lower lip and wondering if she should let her husband sleep or wake him and get this over with. Unlike Kelly, Josh was asleep and completely unaware to the anxiety his wife was feeling. For him there was never such a thing as too much sleep. He was in the middle of a good dream when he began drifting in and out of deep sleep. When Josh felt the bed shift from his wife 's return, it pulled him further from sleep. He didn't mind though. After stretching and yawning, he opened his eyes to find Kelly there. "Good morning beautiful," he murmured. His eyes glanced at the clock. It was incredibly early for a Saturday. Not knowing she had something on her mind, Josh reached out to pull her closer. Kelly wished she was still asleep. Being awake this early on a Saturday was definitely not her idea of a good time. Especially when she was awake because she’d needed to take a pregnancy test. She was still in a little bit of shock and she had no idea how she was supposed to feel about all of this. Rather than dwell on it, she shifted closed as Josh reached out to pull her closer. Her eyes slipped closed for a moment and she tried to focus on how nice it felt to be in his arms. It was so much easier to believe everything was going to be okay when he was holding her, even if she hadn’t had a chance to tell him what was going on. “Morning,” she mumbled in return. She tried to sound and act normal, but Josh knew her better than anyone else and it probably wouldn’t be hard at all for him to sense something off in her voice. She couldn’t keep her thoughts from drifting back to that pregnancy test and that little bit of distraction was probably obvious in her tone, no matter how she tried to hide it. While Josh would have been perfectly happy to drift back to sleep, he couldn't do that. Not when Kelly didn't sound or seem like herself though. He propped himself up his elbow to make it easier to look at her. "What's the matter, baby?" Josh asked. He didn't know what could be on her mind but if she was distracted and something was bothering her, he hoped she would tell him. “Nothing,” came Kelly’s automatic response. There wasn’t anything wrong, exactly, after all. Of course, it was obvious she was distracted and she knew he wasn’t going to accept her response, whether it was technically true or not. Something of an explanation was going to be required. “I’m fine,” she assured him, flashing him a bright smile of reassurance. “I’m just a little... pregnant.” She paused, not really sure what to say next. Maybe it was best to just not say anything and give him a second to process the news. His eyes opened wider as he processed that statement. That was certainly not what he thought she was going to say. Though he was caught by surprise with the news, he was happy about it. He had always wanted to have a family with Kelly. Part of Josh hadn't expected it to be this soon but he wasn't unhappy that it was happening already either. After taking moments to process it, a smile formed on his lips. There was only one reaction he was going to have, even if he had to take time and process the information. "We're going to have a baby," Josh finally said, a bright smile on his face and a mixture of excitement and nerves in his voice. He was certain being a parent wasn't easy, but the excitement of this kind of pushed his nerves down. He also knew his mother was going to be ecstatic when they announced the news. “Yeah,” Kelly confirmed softly, nodding her head. There was a slight smile on her own lips at this. Josh looked so happy and she couldn’t help being affected by that. She was still scared as hell about all of this, but if Josh was happy, she could be happy with him. After all, she was thoroughly convinced that there was nothing she and Josh couldn’t do together. “We’re going to have a baby,” she repeated, her smile growing a little more as she leaned in to brush her lips over his. This wasn’t planned and a part of her was incredibly nervous about the months to come, but she told herself they could do this. Everything was going to be perfectly fine. |
