Matt murmured softly to the tiny bundle in his arms as kept the rocking chair in motion. The little boy had drifted off to sleep some time ago, but that didn't matter to Matt. The newborn seemed to be comforted by the sound of his voice, and Matt felt as though he had a million things he needed to tell his son. "...there's an opening just large enough for a pickup… if you take that left and follow the path for about fifteen minutes, you'll find the best fishin' hole in all of south Georgia..." It had been several hours since Daniel Richard Kane had been born. His mother was sleeping peacefully a few feet away from them. Matt knew he should get some rest, but as ridiculous as it sounded, he didn't want to take his eyes off of the baby in his arms. After all, he didn't want to miss it if something important happened. Maddie was exhausted. It was nearly 24 hours after she’d first gone into labor and after what had felt like an eternity, her son had finally decided to make an appearance. Honestly, saying she was exhausted felt like an understatement. She’d forced herself to stay conscious long enough to hold her newborn, but after a few moments, she had been content to hand him to her husband and in barely any time at all, she’d slipped into a peaceful sleep. She couldn’t have told you how long she’d slept for. It didn’t quite feel like enough, but as she stirred and heard the sound of Matt’s voice, she couldn’t help but smile. Maddie was still more than a little nervous about being a parent, but seeing and hearing Matt with their little boy alleviated those fears for the moment. “Hey,” she greeted him softly as she opened her eyes. Her smile grew at the sight of him sitting there in the chair, rocking their son. Maddie wasn’t usually given to much sentiment, but who could help thinking they looked completely adorable like that? Matt was so lost in the conversation he was having with his son that he didn't realize his wife was awake until she spoke. His murmured words trailed off as his gaze moved to hers, and he smiled broadly. "Hey, beautiful," he greeted in the same tone he'd been using while speaking to his son. Truth be told, she looked just as tired as she felt, but that didn't matter. He meant what he was saying, she was beautiful. In his opinion, she'd never been more beautiful. "How are you feeling?" While focused on her, his rocking had faltered and the baby began to stir. Realizing what he'd done, he picked up the rhythm again. "Shhhh," he crooned softly. "Daddy's got you." “Like I could sleep for a year,” Maddie joked, though she shifted into a slightly more upright position. A smile spread over her face at his words. She was sure she looked far from beautiful at the moment, but that didn’t mean she didn’t enjoy hearing him say she was. After all, it wasn’t often that either of them were this sappy. She smiled again as the little boy in his arms started to stir. They were parents. It was a little bit scary, but at the moment she was much more focused on how cute her husband was with the baby. “He’s the beautiful one,” she murmured as she looked at the two of them. “Can I...” her words trailed off. She wanted to hold him, but a part of her was nervous. She wasn’t exactly great with kids, even if her niece seemed to love her for some bizarre reason, and a part of her was worried she would do something wrong. Matt was so good with him. She was torn between a desire to hold her son and not wanting to disturb the pair of them. "I don't know about a year," he teased, "but you could sleep for a little longer, if you wanted." Matt wasn't the type to spout romantic nonsense, but this was easily one of the happiest moments in his life. If he was being a little sappier than usual, he felt like he had the right. Not to mention, he'd seen what she'd gone through to bring their son into the world. If anyone deserved a few compliments, it was her. "He truly is," he agreed without hesitation. His attention had turned to the little boy in his arms, but it moved back to her when she began to question him. "You want to hold him?" he questioned with a very large smile. Truth be told, he wasn't ready to give him up, but he knew it was only fair. After all, it had been a few hours since she'd held him. Rather than waiting for her to answer, he shifted to his feet and moved to her side. "He's probably getting hungry, anyway. Want to try to feed him?" Maddie nodded her head, chewing softly at her lip when he asked if she wanted to hold him. “Yeah...” she admitted. She knew it was ridiculous to be nervous. It wasn’t like she’d never held a baby before. Danny was just so tiny and he looked so peaceful in Matt’s arms. A part of her was worried about disturbing him. Matt’s suggestion that she try feeding him didn’t do much to alleviate her nerves. What if she did it wrong? What if he didn’t like it. She swallowed back her fears, though and nodded her head. Moments later, she was holding Danny securely in her arms. It hadn’t exactly been easy to start him feeding, but after several moments of trying, he’d finally latched onto her nipple and she let out a relieved sigh. “That’s really not as easy as they make it look on tv,” she remarked, tearing her gaze briefly from the infant in her arms to look at her husband for a moment. Danny had eaten a few times since he'd been born. At the time, though, Maddie had been beyond exhausted, and it had made more sense to give him a bottle. Truth be told, Matt had expected the infant to breast feed with very little effort on their part. It quickly became obvious that was not going to happen. Rather than fussing over the struggling pair, he gave them a little space. As much as he wanted to, there was no way he could help, and he figured his wife would stress less if he gave her time to work with the baby. An obvious look of relief moved over his features when the little boy began to eat, and he grinned triumphantly at the two of them. "Don't worry," he teased as he shifted a little closer. "He's too much like his daddy to not love boobies." Maybe it was wrong of him to make light of the situation, but he hoped that it would help her to relax a little more. Maddie couldn’t help but laugh at her husband’s comment. It had been a little frustrating when Danny hadn’t immediately picked up on what she wanted him to do and just done it, but Matt’s comment brought a genuine smile to her face. “Hopefully not too much like his daddy,” she teased. “He’s not allowed to knock anyone up until he’s at least 30.” She focused on the little boy in her arms for a moment, softly murmuring her encouragement to him as she ate, though she sent the occasional glance Matt’s way. “Hey, I kind of love you, you know,” she told him. She didn’t say the words often, but this seemed like a good moment to tell him she loved him. As nervous as she was about what came next, they’d just brought their perfect little baby boy into the world. It was hard not to feel a little emotional about that. Matt flashed his wife a charming smile when she laughed at his joke. Their senses of humor rarely meshed, but he was glad to see that she'd actually been amused by what he'd said. After all, he had been joking, and the last thing he wanted was to fight with her over something stupid. "In that case, we'd better hope he's nothing like his daddy," he responded. When her attention focused on the baby in her arms, he was more than happy follow suit. He was gorgeous, after all, and he found something new to love every time he looked at him. "I love you, too," he answered without hesitation. They weren't the type to use those words often, but he meant it from the very bottom of his heart. He loved her more than words could express. The birth of their son only served to strengthen those feelings. |
