Ashleigh stroked her stomach absentmindedly as she flipped through the pages of the magazine she’d brought with her onto the plane. Her eyes skimmed over the various articles, but she was far from engrossed. “I am so ready to be home,” she told her husband with a slight smile. It had been a few days since they’d slept in their own bed, and she was looking forward to it. She enjoyed traveling with him, but it was tiring to go from New York to Memphis to New Orleans in a mere three days. Her free hand moved to his and her attention moved back to the magazine. A moment later, though, she jumped when something bumped in her stomach. She’d been feeling the baby move for a little while, but it had never felt quite like that. Rather than saying anything to her companion, though it was possible he’d felt her jump, she brought his hand to rest over the place she’d felt the bump and evened her breathing. Had the baby really kicked or did she have gas? Had she imagined it altogether? Ashleigh wasn’t the only one who was really ready to be getting home. Ed loved playing basketball, but he hated how much time he spent on the road. It was nicer to have Ashleigh with him, of course, but he wished they were able to spend more of their nights in their own bed. He smiled as her hand moved to his. Ed twined their fingers together, giving hers a gentle squeeze. His seat was reclined back and his eyes were closed as he contemplated taking a nap, but his thumb rubbed absently over the back of her hand. This smile on his face grew when she pulled his hand over her belly. Words couldn’t describe how happy he was to be having this baby with her. To say he was merely excited seemed like an understatement and when he felt that flutter of movement under his hand, he sat up, eyes wide open as he looked at his wife. “That... she moved! That was her!” he exclaimed in an excited whisper. “That’s our little girl?” If it was possible, his grin stretched even wider. Truth be told, Ashleigh didn't have much of a belly. She'd gained a grand total of twelve pounds since she'd found out she was pregnant, but that didn't mean she wasn't extremely proud of the slight bump that had appeared during the last week. She was very nearly holding her breath when she finally felt another flutter of movement. She hadn't imagined it! A very bright smile moved over her features when her husband sat up. Their eyes met, and she nodded when he questioned her. "I think that's her!" she answered just as excitedly. As soon as the words were out of her mouth, she evened her breathing and waited. Maybe it would happen again. It felt like an eternity that Ed sat there almost not breathing, eyes locked with his wife’s as he waited to feel another fluttering. His palm was resting gently over the slight bump in Ashleigh’s abdomen and he didn’t move, as if afraid that any movement would ruin the whole thing. Finally, there was another flutter of movement under his hand and his whole face lit up in a joyful smile. “Oh, my... that’s amazing,” he breathed. There weren’t words to describe it. If there was any doubt that they had created a life together, right here was their proof. Their little girl was certainly making her presence known. “I love you so much,” he murmured as he leaned in and pressed his lips to hers in a loving, tender kiss. A very large grin moved over her features when there was another bump under their hands, and she finally took an actual breath. That was… indescribable. She'd known that she was pregnant, but it was really starting to sink in. They'd created a life together. She was carrying their child… their daughter. That was… amazing. "I love you, too," she answered softly before returning the kiss he brushed over her lips. "I love you so much." Rather than returning to her magazine, she leaned over and rested her head on his shoulder. "This is amazing," she murmured. They would be home soon, but she was happy to spend the rest of the flight just like this. |
