She'd been studying far too hard, or at least that's what her roommate said. Actually a lot of people tended to say that about Alyssa. Studying to become a doctor was tough work and you had to put in the hours if you wanted to be a good doctor anyway. Some days she tended to live in her dorm room huddled up with books and highlighters and index cards. This was why she found herself having a couple beers at a party where her roommate's boyfriend went to school. Luckily for her, her friends went to this school too! It typically wasn't hard to get one of them to come out and have fun. She'd gotten all pretty, wearing a denim skirt paired with a cami and cute shirt over it. She'd made her way over to get herself a beer, when she spotted Tyler talking to some people. Not wanting to be rude, she grabbed herself a drink and waved. When it seemed like the conversation died down, she made her way into it. "Great party, right?" she asked, grinning. It would be an understatement to say she was having a good time. A few beers were always good for that! Tyler was usually pretty responsible, but he definitely wasn’t opposed to a good time, so when Lyssa had insisted he come out with her tonight, he really hadn’t considered refusing her. After all, she was a good friend with a cute pout and he was pretty much powerless to resist when she wanted something. Especially when that something led to him having fun. Besides, Lyssa studied too much and it was his job to make sure she remembered to take a break, right? Right. So he took a pull at his beer as he flashed her a grin when she came up to him. He’s been chatting up a couple of people he knew from classes and one of them was a cute blonde, but he didn’t mind. He was here to hang out with his friend, not to try and get laid, right? “Not bad,” he agreed, slipping a casual arm around her shoulders and flashing her a dimpled grin. “Much better than quality time with all your weird highlighters and index cards, right?” he teased her. He couldn’t help it. Even her family told her she needed to find a better, more consistent balance. Thankfully Tyler helped her out with that balance on occasion, as he was currently. If she didn’t have friends like Tyler, Gage and Gigi, Alyssa was sure she might not leave her dorm for weeks. Excluding classes of course. And the occasional food run. People thought she was absurd but she truly forgot to eat sometimes. She didn’t have a disorder or anything like that. When she was focused, she was really focused. Everything else just got forgotten about. “For once, I think I can agree with you,” she responded, teasing him right back. “Don’t get used to it,” Lyss warned him with a smile. It should be obvious that there was no truth to what she’d just said but it was undeniably nice to be out, laughing and smiling. She couldn’t joke or tease her index cards and highlighters. The day she could she’d become the patient rather than a doctor in the making. She took a sip of her beer. It amused her that most girls didn’t drink it. Actually they quite detested the stuff she found. Alyssa was by no means an alcoholic of course, but the occasional beer or a few shots, well there was nothing wrong with that. Instead of overthinking and focusing on what all the other people were drinking, she took a long sip of her beer and did her best to empty her mind. It was a party and they were here for fun, after all. “I think I am really looking forward to the holiday’s.” It was random, but true. Then again Lyssa was good for those random thoughts that popped up out of nowhere. A break would be wonderful. And a little trip home to see her family would be great. Especially since she didn’t think she’d get to go home for Thanksgiving. It was such a short break, and such a process. She’d miss her family, but she was sure there might be something happening on campus or something. ”One of these days you are going to learn that I am always right,” he retorted, still grinning at her. It felt natural and easy hanging out with Alyssa, which was one of the reasons why he liked spending time with her. Sure, he kind of saw her as one of the guys, but that was also why he liked her. This was just comfortable. “Yeah? You heading home?” He knew she missed her brother, but a part of him kind of hoped she’d be hanging around, at least for part of the time. With Lori’s family in New York now, he wouldn’t have her company to look forward to and with his parents never around, he kind of hoped some of his friends would be here rather than off.. wherever. Of course, the break from school would be nice. That went without saying. Honestly, though, for Tyler that was the only really good part about the holidays. For him, they weren’t usually anything special. She rolled her eyes at him. “You wish you were always right you mean. I’m the future doctor. I think I’m always right.” She stuck her tongue out at him for good measure. Though, in retrospect that probably did little to support her case. Lyssa shook her head in response, her dark brown hair swaying with her movements. “It’s hard. I have classes on Wednesday until late evening and I’d have to be back by Saturday night.” She shrugged her shoulders, trying to assure herself more than Tyler that she was okay with that decision. It just was impossible this term. It was too much running around. “I’ll just be hanging around here by the dorms. Winter break will be here soon enough,” she ended, only a trace of sadness in her smile. If you blinked, you missed it. She amped it up a notch or two, a bright smile that reached her eyes this time. “Great song!” she announced. Part of it might have been changing the subject or deflection but she really did love this song. “Don’t you just love this song?” Alyssa asked him. She took a long sip of her beer and playing it on the counter. ← typo? If anyone understood not wanting to talk about something, it was Tyler. Most of his friends didn’t even know about his brief secret fling with Lori, so it wasn’t like he could confide in them now about how he was feeling about her engagement to Charlie. Not that he wanted to talk about it, anyway. No amount of talking was going to change the situation. He was in love with a girl who was in love with someone else. The only thing he could do was try and move on. “I do! Let’s dance,” Tyler flashed her a grin and set his own drink down before grabbing her hand and pulling her out to the dance floor. The music had a nice beat and dancing would definitely be more fun than thinking about how his parents were probably going to be far away come Thanksgiving and he’d be sitting in his big house all alone from some turkey flavored tv dinner or something. |
