Hello! I'm awkward around women! How about you?
Who: Edie and Quinn
When: July 7th (backdated)
Where: Mennie's Bed and Breakfast
What: Girl-inspired fear by Quinn
Edie sat pretzel-style on one of the wooden chairs within Mennie's kitchen. Right out of the shower, she was busily at work expertly twisting her freshly washed blonde hair into a french braid. As her fingers navigated through the wet hair, her eyes were focused on a book that was balanced opened on the kitchen table. Her bare toes, unpolished, were tapping the air as they followed the music drumming into Edie's ears from her iPod. The girl definitely did not have a problem multi-tasking.
Plus, her mood had lifted tremendously since moving into Mennie's Bed and Breakfast. Friendly faces greeted her in the morning, good food was never in need, and her room felt like her room not just a temporary sleeping place. Even Fog, her black cat, was enjoying himself, spoiled by the amount of attention he was receiving and the fresh tuna occasionally and mysteriously appearing in his bowl. Apparently, Mennie like she did all her tenants treated Fog as one of her own.
Then there was Quinn. Whenever he was around he seemed to make Edie forget about how much pain she was in from the loss of her family. He had become a calming presence and reason to smile.
Quinn bounced down the stairs and into the kitchen, immediately going to the fridge for some form of breakfast. "Hey Edie," he greeted cheerfully upon seeing her.
The blonde, back to Quinn, continue reading from her book. It was most likely the extraneous volume of music - Quinn would be able to distinctly hear the words to Up Around The Bend from her earphones - that caused Edie not to notice Quinn's entrance into the kitchen nor his greeting.
Quinn grabbed an orange and turned around, grinning mischiviously upon realizing Edie was listening to music and hadn't heard him at all. He walked up behind her to stay out of her line of sight, then put a hand on her shoulder and leaned over to peer at her. "Hey, Edie!"
Edie's reflexive jolt probably made her look as if she just got struck by lightening. "Jiminey Cricket!" she cursed, stopping herself from uttering something much fouler. She ripped her headphones out of her ears and turned to Quinn. "You scared me silly, Quinn! Here," she grabbed his orange-free hand and placed it squarely in the middle of her chest. "Do you feel that? That's my heart trying to burst out of my ribcage." Despite her utterances, the girl was smiling.
Quinn grinned at her. "Serves you right for being all wrapped up in your music. You should pay more attention to your surroundings." He pulled his hand back and started peeling the orange, plopping into the seat next to her.
"Surroundings-smoundings," Edie dismissed the comment and went back to her reading. Until she remembered what she was reading and then her cheeks flashed scarlet.
Quinn shook his head, about to go on his way, when he glanced down and saw a few of the words on the page of her book. "What are you reading?" he asked, curiosity piqued.
"Nothing," she sputtered as her cheeks grew one shade darker. She slide the book off the table and into her lap. Edie would not admit that while researching at the library she decided to check out The Complete Idiot's Guide to String Theory. That would just make her look silly.
"Oh no," Quinn said, face lighting up in a grin. "I just saw something about quantum gravity and resonant frequencies." He gave a laugh and reached for the book. "Come on, what is it?"
"No you didn't," the blonde lied, unconvincingly. She pressed the book firmly against her thighs and with her other hand smacked Quinn's hand away.
"Ah haha," he said, laughing. "Come on, it's nothing to be embrassed by. Science is fun!"
Edie did not laugh in return. Her lips curled inward to form a straight stubborn line. She was embarrassed, not because it was a science book, but because it was his science and she was reading it so he could think more highly of her. The girl wasn't even sure why she wanted to impress Quinn so badly. Whatever it was, it certainly was pathetic.
Quinn wasn't exactly Mr. Observant, but even he wasn't thick enough to completely miss the fact that Edie had shut down. "Okay, okay. Sorry. I didn't mean to pry." He popped a bite of orange into his mouth and stood to leave.
"No, hey, Quinn, stay," Edie rushed out. The blonde sighed, giving up. She lifted the book so the obnoxious orange cover was visible to Quinn. "Can I have a slice of your orange?" she asked as she displayed the book for him.
Quinn read the cover and let out a pleased laugh. "I knew it!" he said, retaking his seat and handing her a slice of his fruit. "What the heck made you want to read that? It's probably pretty dry for non-nerds."
She shrugged and took the piece of orange. "Just curious, I guess," she semi-lied, popping the orange into her mouth.
"But didn't want to ask me and have me bore you to tears again, I get it," Quinn teased with a smile.
"Mmnh," Edie replied over her orange. She quickly swallowed and wiped the juice from her chin. "That's not it at all. I just..." How to say it without embarrassing yourself even more? "I kind of wanted to get it all down and then impress you," she opted for the truth. What a stupid thing to do.
Quinn blinked. "Really?"
Edie was a little surprised by his apparent surprise. "Yes," she clarified, eyeing him carefully before continuing into her usual ramble. "I don't really know why, of course. It wasn't like one day I just woke up and declared that I wanted to get your attention in some other way than the usual flirting..." The girl's eyes widen and she hook her hand frantically in front of Quinn. "Not that I was flirting, I mean I was, but not like..." She cut herself off with a clump of laughter and leaned back in her chair, defeated. "I apologize. Maybe I should stop talking."
Had the girl been thinking about Quinn in that way? And why in the world wouldn't her brain tell her before the embarrassing side-effects of her verbal ADD?
"Um, it's all right," Quinn said, going a little red and turning into his usual awkward self. "It's flattering, though a bit unexpected." His mind went to Wade for a moment.
Edie shrugged, apparently over her first wave of embarrassment. Though she wasn't, not really, she just wanted to play it cool. "Unexpected? Sugar, you are too humble," she smiled.
The girl thought that maybe it was just hormones that were fooling with her.
Quinn smiled at her, running a hand through his hair. He was a little nervous, suddenly. "Uh... thanks."
"What?" Edie asked, leaning in. She sensed something was wrong. Well, she was a downright fool if she just embarrassed away her friend.
Quinn was suddenly hyper-aware of her proximity. He pulled back a bit. "Nothing!" he said. "I just realized I let myself get distracted. I was supposed to go work on the timer this morning."
The blonde frowned, upset that she had made Quinn uncomfortable. "Oh," Edie mumbled. "I don't want to keep you then." She went to return her attention back to the book that started the whole commotion but added first, "Maybe when you get back you can teach me more about all this stuff. Honestly, its a bit overwhelming even if they claim it's an 'Idiot's Guide,'" she smiled.
Quinn smiled, looking at bit more relaxed when science was mentioned. "Sure," he said. "I'd be glad too, if you don't mind the possibility of me babbling on."
"Of course not," Edie answered with an internal sigh of relief. "You listen to me babble on all the time. I need to make it up to you," she laughed.
Quinn grinned at her. "Okay it's a date." Then he realized what he said and backpeddled. "I mean.. .you know... study date... I'm going to go."
Edie wasn't sure if she should laugh at his fumbling over the usage of the word 'date' - to show she was fine with treating the thought of it ever happening as a joke - or if she should stay silent and just let the moment pass without any more awkwardness between them. The girl simply nodded. "Got it," she said. "Now go on, skat. You need to get to work." It was said light, playful.
"See you!" he said, waving and skittering out of the room, heading to the school and replaying the morning over in his head.
