RP: Vacation
Who: Everyone
Where: Cars, Inn
When: August 12, 2011
Summary: A road trip and arrival at the Inn

Getting twenty-eight people with different ideas about what a vacation should be ready to leave was not as easy as it sounded. Derek was pretty sure that Garcia had robbed a shoe store and planned to take it with her even though they were going to be away only two days. He wouldn't be surprised if Hanna's luggage included a few semi automatics. So yes, different styles, different priorities.

To avoid any discussions, he and Callen divided people by car, and even rented extras so they wouldn't be squeezed into four cars. They handed out keys and rosters. "You've read the email. If you get there, check in. Use your aliases," Derek reminded everyone.

Hanna stepped forward. "Everyone should be carrying their badge and their issued gun. That doesn't mean that you have it in your suitcase or you bag. It should be on you: back holster or ankle holster. Ladies, use clothes that will let you wear one. When we are there, at the pool or anywhere you're not wearing one, make sure someone else has one and that you still have your gun within reach and where no one can steal it. Also if you have a spare, carry that too."

Derek would never get used to that sort of warnings, not that he didn't carry all the time, but seeing Garcia or Nell with a gun just felt wrong, but he knew that it was inevitable. "You heard the man. Now, let's go, and hopefully we can get there before dark."

Spencer had got car sick when he was a kid and had always been sure to sit in the passenger seat. But with Morgan in the front he'd decided the back was the clear choice. Because after The Conversation, which was what he was calling it in his head, he was trying to keep his distance. But then he thought about it more and he realized it was probably not practical, being sandwiched between someone and the door, that sounded a little painful, unless it was Penelope and he really didn't want to risk it. So he took the passenger seat and did his best to look very absorbed by the book in his lap and the sights outside the window.

Turning in his seat he smiled at Penelope and then looked to Nell. Reaching into his pocket he shuffled a deck of cheap cards he'd picked up, moving them between his hands. "Pick a card?" He offered her with a smile, holding out the deck. Spencer wasn't very good with new people without a buffer and magic was always his favourite choice.

A weekend at a resort sounded just perfect to Nell and she was packed, ready to go, before work for the day even began. There were visions in her head of hours spent lazily by the pool, maybe a hike, a nice dinner somewhere. A couple days where she didn't have to think about her future Magneto status. The long car ride didn't even bother her, since it meant she had a chance to talk to Kensi, which she didn't often get.

Part of her was dying to start questioning the new guy, but she didn't want to start her usual babbling when he couldn't escape the car. Spencer Reid sounded like an interesting man from what she'd heard. John was still stuck on how fast he read, which amused Nell when they spoke for a bit after work the day before. But, she was going to take it easy on the poor man and not swamp him with her usual copious amounts of verbal verbiage. So, the request to pick a card wasn't on the list of expectations, though, and she blinked a moment before answering. "Hmm....okay. Let me see..." Taking her time, Nell carefully selected a card. "Should I look at it? Or just give it back?"

He knew a group like this talked, Morgan had told him about lots of the people here and those people had told each other about him and every time he spoke to someone new he felt like maybe they'd already been briefed on him. But that was actually comforting, reminded him of home.

The holiday was a surprising idea, but not necessarily a bad one and Spencer was just excited to have his own bed for the night, even if he still had to share a room with Morgan. It didn't matter, distance of any kind was going to be appreciated.

She seemed surprised but not unimpressed and he twisted further so he was facing her as best he could. "You should look at it and then just put it back in the deck." Spencer said with an easy smile.

Nell couldn't help remembering Deeks with his hussling at cards back at home, being let in on the prank Callen, Sam, and Kensi put together. It had been fun, being the new girl and taken into the group like that. It made her miss home a little. But only briefly.

She looked at the card for a long moment, memorizing it. When she was ready, she started to put the card back and then stopped, catching the exact words he'd said. "On top or anywhere in the deck?" she asked, knowing putting the card back in the wrong place might ruin the trick and not wanting to do that.

"Anywhere you like," he said with a grin, waiting for her to slid it back into the deck. "You know card magic dates back to the second half of the fourteenth century, although it's largely undocumented, it didn't become popular really until cards became widely available and then they were just an easy medium to get ones hands on," he said, catching her eyes with a smile.

He shuffled the deck quickly before he handed it to her. "Now you shuffle," he said, unable to keep the smile off his face. Tricks like this made him feel at ease, there was something going on between him and the person he was trying to engage that could take some of the attention off him.

"So, about the same time playing cards were coming into Europe, then?" Nell slid the card into the lower portion of the middle of the deck. Card tricks weren't something she'd studied, but random things like when playing cards themselves originated had ways of migrating into her brain. "So, were the cards invented for the tricks and then other games came later? Or did they play card games and someone started playing tricks with them?" It was all too easy to get her started asking questions, putting information together.

Watching as he shuffled, Nell smiled before accepting the deck to shuffle herself. One thing a girl had to learn when living with three older brothers in college: how to do a proper accordion shuffle. There was probably a rule somewhere in the little sister handbook. Learn to shuffle better than the boys to be invited to their impromptu casino night in the basement. After a dozen or so quick shuffles, she passed the deck back up to the front seat. "There you go."

He had to admit being here had its perks and the perks were people like Nell, who he thought were charming and smart and he wanted to get to know. "About then, they originated in Ancient china and then moved through Europe, although then they didn't look anything like these," Reid said with a grin. "They were invented for games and the tricks came later," he answered, amazed that she was interested in his little distraction talk. Usually people didn't care enough to ask further questions.

Handing them over he watched her shuffle and chuckled softly. "Oh dear, I'm starting to think you're a shark," he said, taking back the cars and cutting the deck. "Is this your card?" He asked, holding up the one in the center of the pack, knowing full well it wasn't.

"Like their cousins the tarot cards. Different games. Did you know they still use tarot cards in Europe to play games more than for fortune telling, the way they do here?" Of course, he probably knew. But, Nell liked to talk about ideas anyway. It was actually sometimes nicer to talk ideas with people already familiar with them than having to explain them to those who were unaware.

Nell grinned at being called a shark. "More like a dolphin," she said with a laugh. Looking at the card he'd drawn, Jack of Diamonds, she shook her head. "Nope. Not that one."

Reid nodded enthusiastically as Nell started talking about tarot cards. "I have some at home, well my home, not the base," he said with a nod. "There are some really interesting games you can play," Reid said, cutting the deck again. It was so easy to talk to Nell that he almost forgot he was trying his best to distract her from the cards.

Looking down he sighed and shook his head, holding up another one. "No, that one isn't right either," he said, shuffling them again quickly. Holding out his empty right hand he reached out like he was going to tuck Nell's hair behind her ear. Then as if by magic he produced a folded playing card, handing it to her with a little smile.

"My first roommate in college was all into the occult and magic and stuff. She made a fascinating study for my psych classes." So, maybe she'd go on one of her verbal jaunts after all. Intelligent conversation made it all too easy. "But, she had like a million decks of tarot cards. Some of the artwork was awesome. But, I couldn't see that there was any appreciable difference in her 'readings' between Merlin's Tarot and Rider Waite and the Gnothic Deck and Witches' Tarot. She swore it did, though. Even put some of the cards up on the walls on her side of the room. That was when I looked up their history. Never knew anyone who could play any of the games, though. Just fortune telling." Which Nell held less than no stock in. A pack of cards was not outlining her future.

Laughing softly as he pulled the folded card from behind her ear, Nell took the card and, sure enough, "Ace of Clubs. Yep, that's it. A nice bit of legerdemain, Agent Reid. How long have you been practicing card tricks?" she asked, handing the card back to him with a smile.

They'd worked on some cases with occult type themes, but had always found that in the end they don't actually have anything to do with people who truly believed in that kind of thing. "I don't believe in tarot or real magic, but there's fun in pretend magic." He said, looking down at his cards. He thought it was just as likely these playing cards could tell his future than the tarot cards people seem so invested in. "People believe in all kinds of things, some people wear a cross around their neck and some, apparently, keep tarot cards on their walls," he said with a smile.

Seeing her laugh made Reid grin and he put the cards away into his pocket, including the now bent one. "I think you mean a nice bit of magic," he said with a laugh. "As long as I can remember, I like illusion," Reid admitted, reaching into his pocket for a coin. "Cards are good, but I like prestidigitation better," he said, rolling the coin across his knuckles and then making it vanish again.
