RP: John and Brian
Who: John Connor and Brian Kinney
Where:
When: Saturday, August 6, 2011 -- late afternoon
Summary: John wants to go somewhere familiar to think and ends up with a bit of a surprise.
The unexpected conversation with Sam the day before had only seemed to put more thoughts in John's head instead of less. Back home, when he had so much in his head and no one to talk it out with, that was when he ended up on the back deck staring at the sky. Although he had someone he could talk to here, he knew talking to Brian about Brian was just going to confuse him even more, instead of giving him an idea of what he wanted, what he wanted to do.
But, he didn't have a back deck here. There were barely any stars and the ones there were could only be seen by squinting.
What he did have was a house with a solid roof, a decent tree to climb and get him up there, and a grey, windy day that suited his mood perfectly. Getting from the upper branches of the tree up onto the roof was tricky. But, once he was there and could stretch out, nothing but sky above him and the wind in his face, it was worth it. That old feeling of being small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things was almost there, not as strong as with an empty sky full of stars. But, the sky was still vast and expansive and he was just one very lonely, confused kid beneath it.
Close your eyes and make your decision with your heart and your gut.
It couldn't hurt to try, right?
Closing his eyes, John breathed, focused on the feel of the wind, then turned inward, trying to still his thoughts. There were so many questions, so few answers...or maybe it was too many possible answers to questions with no single solution. He thought he knew what he wanted, but what he wanted was at odds with other things he wanted. But, was that a reason not to try? He refused to give in to fear in other things, why was he ready to to it now, in this? So, it wasn't perfect, wasn't what he'd thought it was supposed to be. But, was anything?
Maybe Brian was right and he was just making this more complicated than it had to be.
Opening his eyes, John wasn't sure if he had his answer or the right answer. But, he had something. He sat up and moved to the edge of the roof to make his way down. The branch he'd used to climb up was just out of reach from this side. Scooting closer to the edge, he stretched his arm as far as he could, just grabbing hold barely.
And that was when he slipped over the edge.
There wasn't even time to think about the fact he'd just managed to do what any number of terminators had failed to do. Two floors wasn't far to fall and he only had time to close his eyes before he was...falling up? What the hell? The sudden change in direction brought his eyes flying open just as he came even with the window ledge outside his room and he grabbed for it, hauled himself in far enough to sit in the window and look down at where he wasn't splattered on the ground.
Shit. Not the gut reaction he'd expected.
Okay, so...yeah...that was probably what it seemed like, right? This was the crazy world where they got crazy powers. So, maybe if he...from this height and at this angle, worst he was doing was breaking his legs. Closing his eyes and thinking really hard about not falling, he slid out the window again.
And sort of hovered for a minute before slowly dropping to the ground.
John didn't even really think about it. When his feet touched the ground, he just started jogging for Brian's house, hoping to catch him before he went out to wherever he would be spending his Saturday night. He skipped the front door and went 'round to the window of Brian's room instead. "I need to show you something," he said as soon as he had Brian's attention. "Can I come in?"
