Summary: Sam had his own plans that got delayed
After the trip to the Valiant, Sam dropped Jenna off and drove Sean to Coney Island. Sean wanted to go and Sam wanted to provide back up, knowing how crazy things could get at Coney Island. Fortunately, there was nothing crazy, which was a change from the four shooting only a few weeks ago.
When they got home, Savannah was already talking about ice cream cake, but Sam had other plans. He let them get settled in the living room while he went to his room, and then called Jenna, asking her to come down. Downstairs, there was an ice cream cake that said Happy Father's Day, but again Sam's attention wasn't on ice cream.
"There's something that I wanted to say with everyone here." He had thought long and hard about this. G's insecurities and Jenna's attitude had given him the final push that on Saturday morning had him going into the city with his partner. To his credit, Deeks hadn't said anything about the trip, not even cracked a joke.
He approached G, who was standing. It wasn't unexpected considering that everyone was still moving around. "G..." He had a speech planned, but now that formality felt wrong. "You know we're never going to get married, we're never going to have that license, because of the Navy and our job, and for so many other reasons, but I knew that you were the one years ago, I knew that I could never love anyone else the way I love you." He cracked a smile. "I know you well enough to know that the moment you said that we should forget the rules that you meant it, too.
"We're never going to have the wedding, the suits. We don't want them either," he said, chuckling. "At least not the aggravations that go with it. There are vows that Savannah can probably recite from memory that we'll never say, but we're not normal people. We're never going to do anything normal, because normal makes us twitch and nervous, because normal is so far from our default that we wouldn't know what to do with normal. For this reason, in front of our family, of the people that really matter, I promise to always have your back, to come to the range with you and not nag you to talk when there's something wrong, to challenge you when you're wrong and support you when you need it, to ask you to come and spar with me when I'm not feeling well. I know this probably sounds crazy to everyone else, but you know what that means and that's what matters." He reached into his pocket and brought out a box that he opened, and showed G the rings. "One ring, two parts of a whole. This is what we are, because you complete me," he said with a smirk. "There are no priests or imans, but I give you my word that you will never be alone for as long as I live. I love you, G Callen."
