It was one thing to go poking around for random memories in Callen's mind on his own, it was something else to have him pull up specific memories to show him. He and Savannah had done that before, letting her show him things - but this with Callen seeing things that were similar to his own life, and things that went beyond anything Marty had ever experienced and watching all of that build up until he got back to Sam, to being here and to finding love and what that meant and the fear involved in that for Callen.
It was the sort of look into Callen's life that Marty had never really thought he'd get - because despite Callen's suggestion that he look for anything he liked Marty knew Callen was uncomfortable with this, and he wasn't about to make it worse by finding his way into Callen's personal life. He wanted this to be as easy as possible for both of them, since Callen was taking the time to help him find the control and focus he needed to deal with this power.
As Callen began showing him times with, Sam Marty couldn't help the way his own mind pulled forward similar events with Savannah, playing in the background just on the periphery Savannah telling him she loved him, the time Marty had surprised himself into saying it to her and actually meaning it, the constant fear and self-doubt and worry that came with being with her, and also those times when Marty thought maybe this was what life was supposed to be. Savannah had suddenly become everything, in the space of only a few months. More easily than Jess or Michael or anyone else in his life. It had been easy with Savannah, and he'd started to think about more than just here and now, but beyond this. Building a life with her with him, something more than just the life he'd always thought he'd have and what that could be like. And always doubting himself and what he was and the life he'd lived before her and all the life Savannah had ahead of her and just how inadequate he knew he was but she'd been there and she'd loved him knowing more about him than anyone else ever had.
He still didn't know how any of this had happened, how they'd come from that first conversation to this now. Or how he was now suddenly sharing things he couldn't even bring himself to talk about with Callen.
It was that thought coupled with the questions that followed that had Marty pulling back into his own head, he knew the answers to those questions, the answers came far more easily than he'd expected them to - especially with how things had gone with Savannah. And it was that more than anything that had him pulling back faster than he'd done before when working with Callen, retreating into the safety and quiet of his own head, and taking a step back adding to the space between them for good measure.
Marty cleared his throat again, looking up at Callen briefly. "Maybe you were right, tonight might not be such a good night for this." After showing so much to Callen Marty wasn't sure he could deal with any more tonight.
