Adding to the ominous start of the conversation the way Savannah continued did not inspire confidence in Marty that this conversation would turn out well. He'd known Savannah was dealing with something for the last several weeks, since they'd talked about marriage and the wedding. He hadn't said anything about it because he wasn't sure what else there was to say.
"You can't do what?" Marty asked, for the moment skipping over the part where Savannah had said they had to break up. Because that didn't make sense and he wasn't even sure where to start with that one. He could for the moment focus on the part that confused him - because as far as he knew they had been doing all right.
