"I told you that I would treat him like I treat everyone else, and that's when you came up with more exceptions, so you think that I'm lying, or you're putting in doubt my abilities as a trainer, or you aren't listening to what I'm saying, because I specifically said that you'll get individualized training programs," he said, very slowly, although his eyes were still on Sean, who had still not backed away.
"I thought we were talking, before you decided to bring up Savannah and rules and make it sound like that's the only thing I can do. I was planning to have a nice, normal Sunday, or try to do something normal, because I wanted you to have a nice day, but obviously I'm not allowed to do that without you assuming that I have some ulterior motive." Of course, all talk about Savannah and rules became irrelevant as Jenna stood up and joined Sean. Suddenly discussions were secondary as instincts kicked in and he was measuring the space around them, how to get around the table, time that it would waste, and ways to get past them without injuring.
There were no more steps back, no more retreating. He would not be intimidated by his own children. He looked calm and then suddenly one hand was around Jenna's throat, while he got his gun out and pointed at Sean. It didn't matter that the safety was on. They didn't know. Sam stepped closer to Jenna. "You should know better than to corner a SEAL unless you're ready to defend yourself. Next time I tell you to back up, you back up. Do you understand?" He let go of her throat and bent his arm, pointing his weapon in the air. "This, this gun is how I live my life. I have it on me every moment of the day. I shower with it in reach, I sleep with it under the pillow, I have sex with it around. I hug people always mindful of not blocking my guns or theirs. I kiss people knowing that I can still reach my gun and they can reach mine, so we can kill any potential threat. This is my world, and you will have to learn to live in my world and I'll do what I can to teach you"
Sam put his gun back and stepped closer to Sean. "I never brought anyone up, and she's never been treated like my daughter, but I'm damn proud of what she has accomplished and my training, and if your sister brings up training, then you will be compared to her, not as a daughter, but as someone I've trained. Maybe you need to separate the two and not put words in my mouth, but since I'm such terrible father, you won't have to spend more time than necessary with me. Training starts at oh seven hundred tomorrow."
