RP: Getting Instructions
Who: Everyone
Where: the (very small) camp site
When: Wednesday, June 5, 2013
Summary: everyone settles

"Good morning, everyone. For those who don't know us, I'm Supervisory Special Agent Derek Morgan, from the BAU in the FBI. This is Lead Special Agent Callen, from NCIS. Supervisory Special Agent Emily Prentiss from the BAU as well and Special Agent Sam Hanna from NCIS. I'm sure you have noticed Director Vance's absence. I'm sorry to say that the Director passed away in transit. That means we are now in charge.

"Some of you have worked with us and know how easily things change and have to change. For those who have arrived recently, expect changes both in the way we do things and the training that you will receive," he explained. "Callen and I are in charge. You can use Morgan and Callen to call us. Sam and Emily are our seconds and security officers. We don't need titles. We do need and expect you to do what we say. If before, the penalty would have been exposure, in this land, breaking the rules means that you're likely to become dinosaur treats. Now in terms of how we do things, feel free to come to any of us with problems. In the future, we will have people assigned specifically to one of us. You go to that person. Do not go to someone else, because we don't speak for each other. However, we do make decisions jointly and that means that sometimes questions will not get an answer immediately because we need to discuss it.

"Now, most immediate jobs. Troy, April and Nell, we need to move the cars. We'll use the cave as our center, two trucks on one side, two on the other, cars in a second row, half and half. Leave enough space that we can open the doors by the mountain side. Claudia, we need to clear a diameter as long as the cars plus leave it at least another two-car length per side. We're talking about 250 feet in diameter. We will expand, but that's our target zone for the day. If you can't do it, we'll find some other way. Everyone else, we need to cover the cars with mud. The roofs are particularly important. You can use the water from those two pits." Those had been their drinking and bathing water, but with all of the movements, it'd be filled with dirt. "This is a tropical area. So every afternoon it rains. Fill up any and all containers that you have. We will have to make do for today since our water has been contaminated. I'm sure in the next few days, there are plenty of other things that we will need to share and we'd like the chance to meet the new people, but for now, I'll leave it to Sam to give you the rundown of our safety rules. Sam"

Sam stepped forward. "First and most important rule: do not leave the camp area and I mean always, no matter what, no matter if you think it's an emergency, not even if you have to piss. If you feel you need to leave the camp area, you talk to us. Two, in no particular order, get rid of anything that has strong smell, or even sweet one, basically perfumes, cologne, aftershave, lotions, wipes, talc. If it's fragrance free, you can use it. If it's not and you're caught using it, I'll have Robert drop you off in the middle of the forest, because I will not have a single person put everyone else at risk. I don't care what you're used to, if you like your baby to smell powder fresh. You cannot use it. Three, you spend the night in your car. Night means as soon as the sun sets until the sun rises, regardless of time. Four, we will have night shifts. Unless your power allows you to be outside and safe, you will serve your night shift inside the car. One of the major rules is do not make noise. Ever. Except if there's a camp attack. The sudden and loud klaxons might be enough to scare them. However, we're never had a dinosaur get this close before. Five, there will be fires going day and night. Carcasses and intestines of animals are being burned there. Yes, it smells awful. It is the reason why we never had a dinosaur here. They fear the smell. Do not put those fires out. Six, showers. These animals have a pretty good sense of smell. When it rains, you strip and shower. If you have fragrance free soap, us it. If not, it's water. It's really that simple. Also before anyone asks, we don't have private areas, no little boys and little girls' rooms. Everything is done in the camp area in front of the cave. Seven, we're going to pull out our car and use it to block the entrance of the cave. In case we get a full on attack, everyone gets in there."

No matter how much they had covered in just a few minutes, he knew that he would forget things, but he still went over the mental list of everything they had discussed. "Claudia, if you could leave a few trunks intact and Troy can force them deep into the ground, we can run a rope to hang clothes. Eight, nature calls. For today, right side of the cave is for men, left side is for women. You use the space between the trucks and the mountain. For bowel movements, we'll make a trip inside the forest, we will go in groups. You will no attempt to isolate yourself. We won't come after you." That wasn't true. He knew that they would try and save them, but Sam didn't have to tell them.

"And now what you all been waiting for: dinosaurs. These are not what you've seen in Jurassic Park or what you're studied in school. With no human beings, animals have taken over, and there are hundreds of species, from the smallest insects, which tend to do much larger than ours, some are as big as birds, to the truly huge dinosaurs. There are too many to tell you who does what. Also, as far as we can tell, they aren't all dinosaurs, since some reproduce without eggs. These mammals are still relatively big. You will learn with time the different species and their abilities, until then, you won't go anywhere without one of us. Some things that we have noticed. Their eyesight is much better than reptiles. I would compare it to alligators, but there are exceptions. There is a T Rex descendant that has much better eyesight than that. Flying animals tend to have better eyesight and worse sense of smell. Land animals have a very keen sense of smell which is why we need to be careful. Now, one thing that Jurassic Park got right is that dong repulses them. If you're ever in a jam, spread it over yourself. Eau de merde is preferable over death. One thing that they definitely got wrong, we have seen carnivores work in packs. The biggest we've seen is about 5 feet tall, 45 feet long and 180 pounds. They stay in packs of six to eight. A T Rex is scary, but you can avoid one with your powers. Eight dinos as tall as you are not as easily distracted. There are other species that we've seen that work together. So if you see a group of animals, do not assume that they are herbivores," he said. "In terms of how to deal with them, DON'T. There is no good way to kill them. Your gun is useless. You want to keep it with you, great, but do not use it. While it might kill some of the smaller ones, you'll alert every animal around that you're there. I also say might because despite of size, they have very thick skin, and they have bones protecting vital organs. The arrows I've seen, because of their tips will work on some of the smaller pray. However, the moment the blood flows, you'll have company and quick. Rifles could work on some of the medium size dinos. Only a sniper rifle will work on a big dino. You are looking at 80 tons of animal. I repeat, DO NOT SHOOT IT. The best way to kill a dino is to let them kill each other, and get what meat you can. If you are cornered, think about escapes first or use your powers. Outrunning them is not a way to escape. Some go as slow as twenty-five miles per hour some go as fast as fifty or sixty from our best estimates. You're not outrunning them, which is why we will specifically work on powers and how to use them to escape. And this is about it for now unless there are questions and please don't yell when you ask.."

He looked at the other three to see if they had something to add before starting to work.

Claudia was totally psyched that she got to use her power and was totally grateful for all the training Marty had them do. She was also super glad that she'd taken the time to read up on wilderness survival (at least until John re-directed her). With the number of people here, good hygiene was going to be so, so important - they could get each other sick pretty damn easily.

She wanted to tell Emily or Sam or Callen or Morgan about what she'd read but she also didn't want to bother anyone or seem like a know-it-all, especially since they'd been here for months. Plus, everyone was busy, including her. Maybe if one of them came by to see how she was doing, she'd bring it up.

Since there were no questions, Sam started to move, dealing with the people. Emily was going to get Troy to move their car and start the column of metal that would temporarily block the entrance of the cave. He frowned when he saw Claudia and approached her.

"Hey, why haven't you started taking the plants down? is there a problem? If the job is too big since we don't want you to kill the roots, but make most of whiter and die, we can find an alternative, but we need to know." Possibly immediately, because they still had to feed all if these people and they didn't want to use any of the supplies just yet.

"What? No, I've already started. Since we don't want noise, I'm entwining the branches with the nearby trees so when I kill them, they won't crash to the ground. They'll hang from the other trees instead," Claudia said. Or so she hoped they wouldn't crash. Maybe she'd better make the other trees' branches stronger before killing the other ones. Entwining took more work than strengthening and killing.

"By the way, we all have collapsable shovels with our gear, and there should be some for you guys, too. My idea. I was reading up on survival in the jungle wilds and knew we'd have to make cat-holes. The sites said if you have a large group, though, you should really dig a three to four foot, ten-inch deep trench, two to three hundred feet from your water source," she said as she worked. "Since you have animal fat, we can also make lye soap, which has no scent. I memorized the recipe. I read that keeping yourself clean keeps down on the possibility of getting sick, from always washing your hands to bathing to teeth brushing to hair washing, et cetera. I downloaded several survival .pdfs to my flash drive, including the army survival guide, but I'm not sure you'd want to read them since we have limited computers and also you've been trained in all this already."

Claudia smiled at him. "Anyway, I'm a small wealth of group-camp survival facts, including some stuff about stress, the best places to pee, and bathing 'privacy'," she said, making quotation marks with her fingers. "As always, my knowledge is your knowledge, unless it's knowledge I've been told not to share."

"Let's not waste time. Get Troy to help you with that. Or-" He looked at the plants. "Can't you literally make them regress?" he asked. They'd get a better idea of what their powers were with time, but for today, questions would have to do."

Sam frowned again. He forgot how to speak to people not them. "All right, let's work at this again. A water trench for what? What's our ultimate goal? Because things that work in normal environments don't work in a prehistoric, somewhat like rain forest. Now, you can't make lye soap without lye, so I'm assuming this is not lye soap. Also we're not using computers. Those who have them will use them for the machine.

His expression turned neutral as he watched her. "What are the best places to pee and what about bathing privacy?" If she had the answers, he wasn't going to waste time thinking about it, and unlike what people thought, he was willing to listen.

"I can make them shrivel instead of fully die off, if that's what you want?" Claudia said. "As soon as Troy was done with the cars, I was going to try and grab him to shear. My strengths are shriveling, killing, and strengthening the plants, and it's been followed up with movement and getting seeds to sprout."

Claudia shook her head. "Not a water trench, a latrine. One spot for all, and you use soil to cover your mounds to keep the flies down. Once it's filled up, you dig a new one. If it's far enough away from the water source, no one will have to go out of camp to use the bathroom. The depth was pretty specific, because it'll be absorbed by the soil with or without rain.

"Lye soap is made from animal fat and ashes, surprisingly. You pour water over ashes on a straining cloth and what drips out is potash, which is lye. Then you boil down animal fat into grease, mix it with the lye, let it harden, and you've got soap. No scent included. Pretty cool, huh?" she said.

"The best places to pee is around the permeter of your camp, as it keeps the animals away since they don't like the scent, especially the men's, but on that particular site they were talking mostly about keeping bears away from menstrating women because that smell is like a female bear in heat. You don't want to pee anywhere near where you sleep, eat, drink, or bathe because of contamination, which seems like common sense but when you're in an environment like this most people won't think straight.

"As for the bathing privacy, that's a psychological stressor. Normally, you'd separate the men and women bathing time and give each group as much privacy as possible, which could be a simple as turning your backs. I mean, we've all eaten and slept and gone to the bathroom by or with each other, but nudity is a big psychological thing. So, one group bathes, the other guards, and then reverse, and we've got everyone clean."

"Troy can't move the cars until you clear the area. You're the first one that needs to act," he said. "So shrivel away without killing. We don't want to waste time intertwining and making them stronger."

Sam could see where she was thinking and also the problems that they had even before. "The water source is the sky. The pond that's down the hill requires you to go through the forest and herds of dinosaurs, which you can't do without powers, not unless you want to die. The other problem is that we can't really have anything in the camp, because it's one this is it. The area you're clearing which will be our sleeping, training, eating and cooking area. It's why we venture into the forest. With time we can make this bigger, but right now, people can stress."

All right, she was talking about lye as in general term. He was thinking real commercial strength lye. "All right. Soap is something that we can work on once the more important things are dealt with, like food, but the peeing, we're back to this is where we sleep eat and drink. You do realize that you're clearing up a semicircle that is two fifty feet diameter and needs to support 14 vehicles, fifty people and seven dogs, right? Also once again, we have no way to collect the water, because bodies of water attract animals, which is why there is no bathing, but showers, which happens when it rains, which is why you can't separate them, because you don't know how long it's going to rain for. Bodies of water are a big no no here. People will just have to deal with the psychological thing unless they want to be killed." If G could deal, so could everyone else. "And no one said that they have to strip naked. They can keep their underwear, their bras. If they can't handle stress of showering in public after this long, then we have much bigger problems than a shower."

"Got it, boss," Claudia saluted and changed tactics with the trees.

"Most of us trained to stress - Derek is kinda crazy, in a good way - and we didn't expect to find you guys so soon. I tried to download as much into my head as possible for survival situations just in case, until John pointed out to me the best way to survive is to adapt to your environment and that's when I put the .pdfs on flash drive. If the knowledge in my head is helpful, great. If not, no big deal. After all, to sum up what you guys have taught us: 'If you don’t prepare, you could lose everything. If you prepare for the worst and nothing happens, you’ve lost nothing.'"
