Summary: everyone settles

Just thirty minute ago, he would have thought it impossible that they would worry about anything but their survival. Suddenly, there were a million and one things to take care of, and if he could think of that many, he didn't even want to imagine what Sam and Callen were thinking. They might have reached the billions.

The cars were taking over their entire camp area. Increasing their radius had to be their concern first. Or at least second, right after they figured out who half of these people were, their powers, why some people were back. They were about to get the crash course on their team and that was without considering some of the time friends and family would want, because Derek knew better than not to expect those, whether they had time for them or not.

Today was going to be a very long day.

Savannah knew that there were tons of things to do, and yet, she really really didn't care at the moment. She ran out of the SUV with two dogs in tow and practically jumped G. Not just a little jump, but a real one, with legs wrapped around his waist and arms behind his neck, and she was pretty sure that he was already preparing for that and Sam had moved behind him to stop him from falling.

God, she really had missed them!

"I love you, I miss you, I have so much to tell you, like days worth of talking, even at my speed, but I don't know we don't have time, but I really missed you. All of you," she said, looking at the other three, but not letting go of G yet, even if Harley was trying to jump into the group hug.

"I have your backpacks, everything you left behind, well almost everything, and of course by you, I mean everyone but G. In fact, I brought a few extra things that I've been collecting for you guys, and I might have found stuff." She frowned at Sam. "Disney basket? Do I even want to know? Actually I don't. Derek, you have amazing taste. I got a matching wedding band and a great wedding dress. Brian was incredible with that. Oh, and I brought you pie. It's not much. I was planning on bring lasagna when we crossed over, but it happened fast, so I was only able to grab what I had made and it's pie, pecan pie." She grinned at G. "You haven't said anything. Okay, so maybe I haven't stopped talking yet, but I missed you so much. Also I totally made a list of all the things you ever said that I thought they were ridiculous, but people proved you're right. Like people will always do stupid things. There's a long list under that, but it's in in bullet point and pink paper, and I've made an album with pictures of the kids, so you see everything, and the kids know your names. We've made sure they learned from pictures in our training."

She finally stopped and looked at G with a big. "People thought I was crazy, but I knew we were going to find you."

G was already off balance from the sudden onslaught of people's thoughts and contemplating stepping back from people and spending a lot of time alone the way Hetty had when they'd first arrived in what Vance called the Omega dimension. And wasn't that an uncomfortable thought? They'd always joked about her mind reading ability, but she and Vance had never revealed their powers openly. What if...?

But, there wasn't time for thinking about that now. They had a team to see to and all the masks G had created to work with that team, including the one or two he'd still held onto even with family, came sliding back into place practically as soon as they heard the trucks, but definitely by the time Morgan had finished filling them in on the plan he'd worked out with Marty. Catching Savannah wasn't a plan so much as instinct and he cast Sam a grateful look for the assist. Having made peace with the fact he'd lost another family like he'd lost so many others, an armful of babbling cheerleader was enough to send him off balance again if he hadn't already switched personas.

"So you're saying I had to go away for you to believe me?" he teased gently with a smirk and the raising of one eyebrow. "But you need to let go now, so I can put you down and calm Harley before he starts barking and attracting attention of the 'sharp-tooth' kind we really don't want right now."

"That's not fair. I don't want to let you go. Sam, play with Harley." Not that she thought for a moment that it would work. Maybe with her or Marty. Maybe, but Sam had always been the silent watcher when it came to the dog.

"Fine, and for the record, I'm still going to question what you say, because I know how much you like the arguments. Really, I'm doing it for your own good." She kissed his cheek again, but let go. "Harley can have you while I say hello to everyone." Sam and Derek got pretty much the same treatment, while Emily got a smile and a very tight hug. "I missed you so much," she told the other woman. "Also, you can never go away again. I still haven't come up with an alternate Family Care Plan. I can't have all my four choices disappear. Do you know how inconvenient it is?"

Sam snorted. "So sorry to have ruined your plans."

"Well, we're solving them now, and there's someone who wants to see or there will be a lot of attracting attention." She went back to the car, but only Nova followed her. When she returned, she had the twice walking behind her and Jamie in her arms. "Come on, girls. You know who they are, say hello."

"Pa G," Nicki said.

"And Pa, Sah," Kayla added.

Savannah grinned. "We're working on Derek and Emil, but everyone should have letters for name. It would make my life easier. Liam talks. He really talks. I think it's all the time he spends with Robert. Like, he says more words in an hour than you and Robert put together in a day. He's still pretty much attached to Robert's side. And meet Jamie Ray. He just eats, cries and sleep, not much crying though."

Derek took the baby, grinning. "I heard we were Godparents again."

"You totally are. It's all legal. We had the Church register you Godparents by proxy," she explained. "We just had to find you to tell you, and we did, although...." She moved closer and lowered her voice. "I know you haven't had the chance to talk to people, but legal doesn't mean much. I don't think Omega exists anymore. John and Dom can probably tell you a lot more in a more scientific way."

"I've been gone too long if you think I play fair." But, G gave her a tiny a little squeeze before he let her go to bend down and let Harley get his greeting in. Even if he'd entertained the thought of seeing the others again, which he really hadn't, he never would have assumed they'd bring Harley with them.

The conversation ebbed and flowed around him while Savannah passed out hugs and reintroduced the twins, who had grown remarkably in the last five months. And, okay, even with the masks in place he couldn't help a little half smile when the girls said hello. Keeping one hand running over the fur on Harley's back, he got down even closer to their level. "Girls, have you been helping your mom take good care of Harley here for me?"

Meanwhile, Emily already had her arms extended toward the newest addition to the family. "May I?"

"Oh good. We got here just in time for the hugging portion of the day." G looked up in time to see Sean arrive and register that it was Sean before the young man hugged his father about as tightly as Savannah had hugged G...just with less jumping.

"Well, now that's a sight I didn't think I'd see for a long time." This new voice was just that...new. But, from the words and the way the woman who spoke them was looking at Sean and Sam, G had a sinking feeling he knew who that was.

Sam had not missed this part of the job. Too many people involved, too many things that were not what he'd been prepared for. How was he to discuss machines he didn't understand with a science that was so far removed that none of them truly grasped, but here there were, discussing it anyway.

"So what are we really looking at?" he asked, cutting off Dom when he started talking like a college professor.

"Bottom line, we have problems with the battery life. We need time to replenish it, but more than that, we based our dimensional direction on Vance's power." He looked at John, who'd been the one to come up with this. They might not have Vance, but it was still a brilliant idea and John should get to explain.

John caught the look, but shook his head. "I don't know how much you guys had guessed about Vance's power, but he could sense the rifts when they opened. He didn't get a warning. But, when they opened, he felt it. In the beginning, he'd get these monster migraines when it happened. That's really the only reason I knew about it. I was there that night when ten of them opened at once, when Dom came through." And it seemed so long ago, now, since he'd been that eighteen year old kid running in with a gun when he heard Vance scream. "But, even then he could tell where they opened, how many came through.

"How to pinpoint the exact dimensions we wanted to go to has always been the biggest problem with getting this done. Given enough time, there was no question we could build a machine to do it. But, knowing how to pick and choose dimensions and recognize them? So, about a year ago we talked about the possibility that he could use his power to reach beyond the rift to the dimension people were coming from. It was a back-up plan, since we figured we still had three years or more to figure out another way. But, even though he'd only have a minute at most with each rift, he was able to do it. He could feel the differences between different dimensions.

"When you guys disappeared, he felt it. He could tell exactly where you'd gone missing from. But, more than that, he could sense enough about this world that, we could put together a fairly accurate training program for rainforest and jungle living. Judging by how much this place reminds me of home, he really wasn't far off at all. Given that, when our timetable got sped up, we had to go with the back-up plan. It was the only way this was going to happen in months instead of years. Unfortunately, we didn't count on the fact that whatever the government did with their experiments, it not only created the rifts, but destabilized the entire dimension. For the last month or so, Vance has been...had been sensing what I can probably best describe as swarms of rifts opening. He's had a near permanent migraine for at least the last two or three weeks. He didn't say anything specifically, but my guess is that we ran out of time and that dimension doesn't exist anymore. It's been torn apart by all the rifts. It must have been too much for him to handle at the end. But, the short of it is that the machine works, but we have no way of navigating without him."

Sam couldn't imagine any of them not suspecting, at least toward the end, but he also doubted that G or Morgan had asked for the details. Not that it mattered now.

"So unless someone develops his power, we are stuck here for the foreseeable future, with close to fifty people instead of four. Does that pretty much sum up things?"

Dom nodded, but he frowned. "What do you mean if someone doesn't develop his power? Did you lose yours? Did they change?"

"We get a whole new set of powers." He looked at G. "Ready to this again?"

Derek snorted. "Do we have a choice? We need to keep them alive until these two find us another way with no computers to help them. We all have our job cut out for us."

G shrugged. "It's what we do."

"We might have another option," John added. "Brian O'Conner. I don't know how much he's retained, but Vance and I have been working with him ever since he sensed the rift opening when Tamira arrived. For a time, we thought he had Vance's power. But, he didn't seem to pick up the swarms. I think, somehow, he was using Vance's power temporarily. But, whether or not he still can, I have no idea. It's a very long shot, but it can't hurt to try."

"The last two and half years have been one long shot after another. We'll see what he can do."

"Being able to download Sheldon's brain would be nice." John huffed, looking at Dom. He knew he hadn't caught up to their level and a lot of the physics was going to rest on Dom, even with John doing what he could there or taking over maintenance of the machine all together. "We've got some data. A while back Peter suggested I map out the arrivals as they happened. I was working on the theory that maybe we could predict them. We haven't really used that data, but I've kept mapping each new arrival and I made sure to make printouts to bring with us, just in case. Vance and I went over everything techwise we could possibly need and could easily obtain and transport. So, we've got spare parts and spare laptops to run some calculations if we save our current ones for the maintenance programs. But, without the supercomputer..." he shrugged. "It'll take awhile."

"Sounds like old times," Emily said with a laugh.

"Anything else we need to know about the tech for the moment?" G asked.

John glanced at Dom and shrugged. "Dom? I can't think of anything. Although, when the two of you have a moment," he gestured at Callen and Morgan, "I'm assuming you're resuming command and there are some things only Vance knew that I need to talk to you about privately." He glanced meaningfully at Morgan. "Very privately."

Robert really didn't feel like he should be here. He loved his brother and finally he'd gotten his head out of his ass long enough to help the team, but this had been Deeks' team and Derek's. He was just going along with the ride. Although... Okay, so he had ideas.

"We're vulnerable from the sky," he said before they could get to the gritty part of planning. "We have too many cars, too close together, shining like a nice beacon for anything up there. Even if we stop anything coming from that jungle, it's harder to walk looking up all the time."

Morgan looked at Robert, then at Callen, before asking. "We're aware of that, but we can't exactly create caves for all of the cars."

"No, maybe not," Robert said, looking at the mountain. "Although we actually can create caves at different heights for the supply trucks and tanker without damaging the structural integrity of the mountain. I mean this is basic engineering, between Dom and me, we should come up with places to create caves, eventually even for the cars, but I was thinking about something more immediate. Like mud on the cars."

Sam nodded. "Camouflage. We can do it low tech, getting people to dirt them."

"We also need to know about these people so we can put them in the appropriate cars," Morgan said.

Derek snorted. "Put them whatever. If they don't like it, they can stay outside."

Morgan looked at Callen again. "Yes, well, that only works for a while, and when they think the danger is passed they bitch. Let's see if we can do it only one. So who do we got?" he asked Deeks.

"Things have been a little different since you guys left us with such a good foundation to build from," Marty replied, smiling. And he was still more than happy to give control back to them. There wasn't going to be any kind of power struggle from Marty's corner.

"Okay, so you're looking at three groups, really: the people you know, the people you've met, and the people who are totally new. And I'm excluding the three of us for the moment. First group: Savannah, Sean, Troy, Renko, Dom, John, Brian, Nell, Alexis, Tim, Claudia, Margaret, Barrish, Hammond, Kepner, Spencer, and Ford. Not a lot of changes there as far as assets and liabilities, although Kepner, Spencer, and Ford have only been back with us for three weeks or thereabouts, after Vance and I made the decision to offer to take them with us when we realized the dimension was basically collapsing. So, they have relatively little of the survival training Derek and John worked out for everyone else since you left. Not sure if you were there or not, but Claudia's power came through close to the time you left. Plant manipulation, if you didn't know. Alexis is working on expanding her invisibility to larger groups and general areas. So, that's something to keep in mind, also. Barrish and Hammond haven't changed a bit, unless you count Hammond's new trick with portals, which you saw. They managed to keep that a secret until just now. So, something else to watch. Relationship-wise for housing, absolutely no changes other than the fact John and Brian have started wearing rings in a manner of two other guys I know who just started wearing rings one day." He looked at G and Sam with an amused smirk.

"Moving onto the second group, people you've met but haven't really had a chance to know well. That would be Travis Marks, Douglas, Thomas, Dr. Isles, Queen, and Merlin. We recalled Marks and the Hammond brothers after your disappearance to get us a little help. Surprisingly enough, the time away seems to have done some good with them. They aren't the same former first sons who left us at the start of October. Thomas has been clean since they left. I recommend giving them a chance and some benefit of the doubt I wouldn't recommend giving their parents." Marty glanced at G. "Savannah is in the process of adopting them into the family, by the way. Thought I should warn you now. And that includes Dr. Isles who is now married to Doug. Travis and Thomas are also together. We've been keeping the four of them housed together, separately from the parents to ween them off that influence. Also, you should know that Travis is recovering from being shot a couple weeks ago. Clipped and collapsed his lung. Having him near Dr. Isles until he recovers might be the best option there.

"Queen and Merlyn are also a couple, the beginnings of one, at least. I always said there was something in the water. Anyway, Queen's good. He might possibly give G a run for his money on taciturn. But, survival skills? He's good. We've had the two of them and Sean working in a unit under Savannah's lead and Queen's taught them all how to use that bow of his. After a recent reorganization Renko, Claudia, Dr. Isles, and Spencer were added to the student list as well and we have bows for all eight of them. Merlyn seems to have his addiction under control now as well and he and Thomas are kind of their own NA sponsors with Queen and Marks supporting them.

"Which leaves us with the people you don't know. I'm including Tamira and Mike Weston in this group, since only one or two of you know each of them. This also covers Brian O'Conner, Matt Casey, and Helena Wells. O'Conner, Casey, and Weston all arrived at relatively the same time about three months ago. Weston is BAU like Derek and Emily. Casey is Chicago Fire Department. O'Conner is former LAPD and FBI turned street racer and international felon. All three have basically done the work, kept complaining to a minimum, and gone with the flow since arriving. We've had to co-op Weston as the team psychologist. And O'Conner has become a sort of unofficial auto mechanic. If those cars are still running, it's because he's been under the hood every night and weekends. Casey's been conscripted for search and rescue when we've needed him. Weston specifically requested to be partnered with O'Conner not long ago because he figured he could work with the man where other law enforcement types might have issues and we recently put him in as a unit lead with O'Conner his second.

"Tamira and Helena came through about a month ago. Helena is from Claudia's world and the two of them seem to be pretty good friends. Thick as thieves since she arrived. Tamira, in case any of you haven't met her yet, is Sean's mother. We've had her living with Dom to help with Blaze while he's been focused on the machine. Both are new and green as far as this kind of living is concerned."

Marty turned to Robert and Reese. "Did I leave anything out?"

"By different, he means that I don't care about their feelings and I've been a wall between them and Deeks and Vance. It's not as satisfying to bitch when they don't get to talk to the person," Derek said.

Sam looked at G and raised an eyebrow. "Should we try that? Have a real chain of command?" He was smirking, because he knew the answer without waiting to hear it. "So did Deeks miss anything since you've listened to them bitch?"

"Not really, just that Savannah is in the process of adopting everyone," Derek added. "That, and I was the one shooting Marks. Flashback from the war because of Thomas' playing, that's why Weston turned psychologist. This is when Robert got pulled into this and units were switched around."

Morgan was surprised at how frank he talked about the situation, but he'd have to discuss that with Weston. "Weston is pretty good. Second youngest member of the BAU after Reid. Smart, educated, military family, a little more focused on the scientific side of the job, but don't think that he can't profile people. He just doesn't do it."

Robert asked Derek for the notebook and pen he kept around and wrote while they talked. He couldn't believe that he was using paper and pen. Those little notebooks that they had and he hadn't used since he was a lieutenant were suddenly going to be useful. "Here, this is what won't get you a major blood bath," he said, handing the paper to G. "SUVs for the people with kids and dogs so they can move and groups that won't kill each other. Also the first names are pretty much a habit now. At the last location all the first names and the last were different for the covers. Everyone used first names."

The paper had the following list:

Van 1: Travis, Thomas, Douglas, Maura
Van 2: Mike W, Brian O, Oliver, Tommy
Van 3: Sean, Troy, John, Brian
Van 4: Elaine, Bud, Margaret, Mat

SUV 1: Deeks, Savannah and kids
SUV 2: Derek, Nell, Alexis, Tim
SUV 3: Robert, Mike and kids
SUV 4: Dom, Blaze, Tamira, Helena and Claudia
SUV 5: Bambi, Spencer, Eve, Ford

"I'm assuming you four will stay together, but if you want to change anything." He shrugged. He was going to get a car for the kids anyway.

The moment they were out of the vehicle at the camp, Oliver grabbed his backpack and went to Tommy's side. Dropping the bag on the ground, he opened it up and pulled out the rolled camos. "Get your camouflage on, now," he ordered quietly. Not that they hadn't made a ruckus in their arrival, but they were in a jungle, had seen a dinosaur already, and he wasn't taking any chances. Not with Tommy.

Oliver stripped right in the open, exchanging what he'd been wearing for their morning run for the camouflage. Their smell wouldn't be hidden, but those that hunted by site would have a harder time of it. This was a completely different arena than the island - his enemies had been human - but some tactics were the same.

He re-holstered his sidearm, assembled his rifle, and fetched his bow and quiver from the trunk. The backpack went on his back and, kitted like for survival training, he surveyed the perimeter and the air, keeping Tommy between himself and the vehicle.

Tommy would have been just fine staying in the car until people figured things over, especially since they had been running and some rest and a nice shower took priority over getting out of the car. Unfortunately people disagreed, and that included Oliver.

He almost told Oliver to relax, but then Oliver was getting naked and Tommy rested against the car, watching his friend. "Oh sure, it takes dinosaurs to get you to take your clothes off. You just want to fuck Brian because of his power," he said, trying to keep a straight face.

Standing here and teasing Oliver would have been fun, if Tommy weren't sure that Oliver would have a panic attack of they didn't get changed. "I'm doing this just because I love you, but I think you're exaggerating. Look, there is space enough for all the cars and trucks." Not that he hasn't been to the Museum of Natural History. Those animals were huge and the open space here wasn't that great, but he didn't need Oliver overreacting.

Tommy changed his clothes as requested, tempted to toss his dirty clothes, but there was no ordering replacements here. "God, this is going to suck. Big time. Are you happy at least?"

"You're the one who doesn't want me bodyguarding you twenty-four/seven, so get smart and figure out why I want you changed," Oliver said, and he was a bit short, but this was a big change. All fun and games were over, and what they'd been training for since arriving in the last dimension was now made real.

"Happy about what?" Oliver glanced at Tommy, and the violet skin against the green camouflage made him think Tommy looked like a flower. His lips twitched.

"Because you are a survivalist nutjob wound tighter than a Swiss watch?" Tommy said. "Oliver, those four have been here for five months without BDUs, extra crap and they don't seem to worry about it. And, they aren't exactly the most laid back bunch. Maybe you are overreacting a little."

He waved his hands in the general direction of his clothes. "This. That I'm wearing the most uncomfortable, itchy, coarse clothes around. They make sweats look like a good option." He raised an eyebrow. "And is there a reason you find all of this amusing? And careful about your answer. I'll turn into Thea next time you're kissing me."

Helena knew, from Claudia, about the rift machine and its primary creators. Eric was previously deceased and Sheldon had died upon crossing into this dimension, which left John and Dom. She knew the intention was not to remain in this particular dimension longer than necessary and it would behoove them to offer her assistance.

She approached John when it appeared he had a brief moment. "John, a word, please?" she said, and at his acquiescense, she went on. "I wished to offer my services since we have come here with tragedy. Though advised not to speak fully with regard to Claudia's and my dimension, I am able to say that I have an extensive background in the sciences. I was the co-creator of the gun in my possession at the time of my arrival. Claudia also possesses similar skills. If I, or she, may assist in making our duration in this dimension remain short, please do not hesistate to recruit either of us."

John didn't really feel like he had a lot of time. The machine needed to be secured and he wanted to start running diagnostics to make sure it had come through the rift intact itself. They didn't have the resources to start over if dimensional travel had fucked it up. And that was besides all the things that needed to be done to set up camp, check on people, there would probably have to be watch rotations set up and he doubted the conversations and catching up with the four leads was anywhere near over.

But, John also believed in making time for the team. So, he smiled and consented as soon as Helena approached. "I remember the restrictions." He should. He'd been there and been the one to catch on to the reason for them. Although, he didn't think she was aware he was also the one who had checked out all the tech that was confiscated from both Helena and Claudia on their arrivals. "I won't know what we need until I've had a chance to look at her, which probably won't happen before things get settled. But, I'll keep it in mind and let you know. Things around here are probably going to change, though, now that Callen and Morgan are resuming command. Assignments like that have historically been their call and it'll be a balancing act for all of us as to which skills are needed most. With this many people, the kids and the dogs, just keeping us all fed and sheltered is going to be a task requiring every hand available."

Helping out with the cars was both rewarding and tiring. She loved helping, feeling useful, feeling as if she was good at what she was doing rather than failing to keep up with people better trained than her. Still when the cars were safely through the portal and she could return to her family she was pleased to do so.

Holding Eve in her arms she hugged her tight, trying not to think about today's losses. Sheldon eaten, the Director dead...she hoped they'd be out of this dimension soon.

At least Savannah was back with her family, and Sean had his father back too. She was happy for both, and for the rest of the family. She was also happy about seeing all four leads again, it felt safer with them around somehow. She trusted them.

"You know, when the Director first told us we should be prepared to sleep in the car, this was definitely not what I thought he meant," she told Eliot. It wasn't as if she hadn't figured it out in the weeks she'd been back, but knowing and facing it were two very different things.

"Better than the alternative," Eliot said. He was with April, though, in the general thought that came across. Seeing this dimension first hand was still a shock to the system. He was very glad he had his eyesight again, and he was going to make sure to thank Margaret profusely, probably with the cooking sherry he'd snagged from the kitchen (even if it wasn't the best tasting alcohol).

He checked on Eve, sleeping in April's arms as if nothing was going on. Cody sat at attention by their feet. Glancing at Nate, he asked, "You good?"

"Yeah, I'm good," Nate answered, though this was so far from a world he wanted to be in as it could get. He'd been restless in Omega, but at least there there had been alcohol. He might have cut down - massively - since his over indulgence in Indiana, but he knew he'd still have problems here once the bottle in his bag ran out.

If they were lucky, this would be a step on the way to home, or a dimension where they could find a home, but he wasn't optimistic.

"Hi," he greeted Mike as he walked over to them.

Eliot alternated between regular sight and x-ray as he viewed their surroundings. He wanted to get accustomed to seeing the jungle with his power as quickly as possible. He had a feeling it would prove to be a lot more useful here than back in the other dimension.

He hadn't brought it up to April, but he was certainly glad they'd kept up with their firearms training. In Indiana and in Kentucky, Eliot had gotten back to mastering the sidearm and rifle. He didn't like guns when it came to people. Dinosaurs on the other hand, he'd have no problem with gunning down. They also had bows but had no time for training with them.

Eliot saw Morgan approaching and gave the other man a smile. "Hey. Fancy meeting you here."

They were already going around, assigning jobs, but he had a few moments to stop and talk. Unlike Callen who had an entire family to deal with, he and Emily didn't have anyone else, eve if Savannah had already adopted them long before the Hammonds had arrived.

"That's my line. You had left us for greener pastures... even if not as green as this," he said, chuckling. "So how are you? How is family life treating you?"

"Vance had a change of heart about leaving us behind," Eliot said diplomatically. He'd bitched to Savannah and that had been more than enough. They were here with the group and they were going to do what needed to be done and make the best of it.

"Things are good, all things considering," Eliot said. He smiled as he looked over at Eve with April. "Eve's a treasure. Three months old and she already rules the roost. I'm still up in the air about having more, after the home delivery. Not exactly something I wanted to be up close and personal with, with my wife and Nate. But since hospitals are out because of our blood being different, we made do and Eve has all her fingers and toes..."

Eliot shrugged, and grinned. "What about you? How's Emily? Savannah briefed us on you guys going missing. You look pretty good for people needing rescue."
