RP: Crossing over
Who: Everyone
Where: Omega, Dinoland
When: Wednesday, June 5, 2013
Summary: They are forced to cross over as Omega crumples around them

The dimensional rifts had been increased in number with alarming frequency . He knew that the deadline was growing closer even though they hadn't dealt with all of the issues concerning the machine. Battery life was still a problem and so was calibrating the dimension. He knew how to reach where Callen and the rest were, but after that, it would be a problem. They didn't seem to have a choice.

They had run out of time.

They were in the middle of their morning run, when Leon felt it. Hundreds, thousands of dimensional shifts opening all across the planet, leading to so many places at once, assaulting his mind like a tank running over wood barracks.

"John." He called out, or maybe screamed the name. Nothing was making sense anymore. "Get the machine ready. We're leaving now. Everyone, fifteen minutes and we ship out. Leave nothing behind." There was no time to talk or explain. People needed to be in their assigned cars and trucks, hopefully with everything they needed. He doubted that anything left here would matter anyway. He couldn't imagine this lasting much longer.

Omega - Getting Ready To Leave

This didn't feel much different than leaving the ranch. If anything, they were even better prepared. The leads' backpacks were in the trucks, together with Emily's wedding dress. Their backpacks were thrown in the SUV with the stroller. She raided the kitchen, putting everything in one big bag, including utensils. She left all the perishable except for one pie she had made for the weekend and had been left there since they had the cake for Nell.

She moved fast, getting the kids, dogs and food all in the car. She knew that Marty will have to deal with getting everyone ready, make sure there were drivers for the trucks. It didn't matter though, because they were like a well oiled machine, and soon, they took their spot in the caravan that left the park, going toward the spot where G and the others disappeared. Once in the back road, they'd cross over.

Savannah was ready to find the rest of their family.

He could barely walk. Brian had to help him in the car while John manned the machine. They needed someone reliable who could be counted on to keep the rift open and then jump in the car at the last moment.

The planning had been solid. It was the only thing that rendered this slightly better. The pain was constant, hitting him over and over until he felt like dying. His brain couldn't take it anymore; it wasn't possible for a person to deal with so much pain.

Leon slumped in the seat. He needed to last a little longer, just a little and then it would be quiet.

The world became silent before they crossed over as an artery in his brain ruptured.

Eliot/April

Eliot wanted to ask what was happening - he hated not knowing things - but the time to ask was after, not during, even if he didn't get an answer. He and April filled the SUV they'd been assigned with their belongings, as well as anything non-perishable Eliot could snag from the kitchen. Eliot made sure to catch Nate's eye and give him a nod before getting underway.

"I guess this is the end, huh?" Eliot commented, driving in the caravan. "There's no going back." Not that they hadn't already agreed that there was no going back when they'd re-joined the group, but crossing into another dimension was a finality.

The first time crossing dimensions had been a shock, and not a pleasant one. To find herself across country, without friends, without family, without the prospect of ever fulfilling her dream - yet she had adapted and tried her hardest to do everything in her power to do her very best.

The experience had changed her to the core, she now had new dreams, new hopes for the future, and none of them included changing dimensions again. Yet this was what they were doing and she had to keep telling herself that it was for Eve's sake that she had agreed to this.

She found it harder this time - if that was even possible - maybe because she now her priorities were different, but also because she no longer had the natural place she'd had before as the doctor to fall back on. Maura had replaced her and she had made it clear that she was not about to share her duties with anyone. Still, April tried to adapt once more. She knew she had to. She talked to people, she smiled, she was friendly and she tried not to show just how much she hated leaving Eve with others (especially Robert) on the days when she could not stay with her.

Today though, none of that mattered. She was on edge when they got in the car, and though she was relieved it was just the two of them and Eve, she hated this entire thing.

"No going back," she confirmed to Eliot, reaching out and taking his hand. "No matter what, we're together, and that's all that matters. We're doing this for Eve's sake."

She looked over at where the Director was being helped into a car, tempted to go check on him. "That doesn't look good," she said. The Director wouldn't show weakness like that if it wasn't serious, but right now there was nothing she could do. They had their orders and the cars were getting ready to leave already. She'd have to check up on him - unless Maura did - as soon as they arrived.

Eliot squeezed her hand. "Eve's all that matters," he agreed. Cody poked his nose over the seat, bumping Eliot's ear. A tense chuckle escaped Eliot. "All right, and you, too, Cody."

Eliot glanced back at Eve, secure in her safety seat behind April. "Hopefully, we won't be long in locating Morgan and the others, and the dimension after this will be one we can settle in. We'll do what we have to, to keep Eve safe."

What he really wished was that they could go home, without the others telling the government they were there. Eliot had the resources and contacts for them to disappear overseas. Maybe once they found Morgan, Eliot could work on the man into letting it happen.

April nodded. "Until then we make the most of the situation," she said. "I've been trying, but it's harder this time around. Maybe because I have you, in a way, I don't need the others as much and this feels...temporary."

"There is no guarantee for that though, so I suppose we should stop thinking of it as such and just-" she paused. "Accept that this might be forever."

She too looked back at Eve, even if it meant turning uncomfortably in the seat. "At least here she won't have to hide who she is. No lies, no pretence. She can be her true potential here." As if answering her mother's thoughts, Eve made the stuffed toy she had with her float into the air. The bell inside the pink car chimed as she let it move back and forth. "At least with this group she won't have to learn not to do that," she said, scratching Cody behind the ears before telling him to lay down.

"I need to try harder," she concluded.

"I won't accept that this is forever," Eliot said. "These people aren't like us. We tried adapting and it didn't work. They're more than happy to put 'duty' over their children without second thought. I won't do that, ever. We'll do what we have to without argument, unless it endangers Eve, for as long as it takes to get somewhere good. I'd rather that be home, but unless I can convince them not to mention us, it's going to be making the best of another dimension."

Eliot glanced at April. "Try harder? How so?"

"We don't even know some of the people now," April said. "There are a lot of new people here we don't really know."

"I also don't think they would, when push came to shove, put duty over the kids. It's one thing to say, it's another to do. Do you really see Savannah or even Robert let the kids die? They'd try to do it all, they'd die themselves to do both, but I can't believe they'd let their kids die."

"Why do you think they're training their children so hard? They're teaching them to survive, so that they'll never have to make the choice."

She looked at Eliot, as if the answer to that was obvious. "Talk to more people, be friendlier, try to find a new place in the group that doesn't hinge on me being a doctor. I did it when we settled down, I just need to do it again."

"Still I wish Maura was more open and friendly. It would be nice if we could work together, it would be nice to have another doctor to work with and talk to but she has made it clear that this is her position now."

"Either way, there are others to talk to, and I will. So should you, for Eve's sake."

Eliot grunted. He might not agree, but he got April's point. When push came to shove, the kids would be first and foremost. He didn't like it that that it came down putting the kids in the position where they could be in danger to begin with, like returning to New York.

"Training them to be soldiers, not kids," Eliot said. "I understand their reasoning. I don't agree with it, though." He'd seen enough kids with guns when he was in the service.

"She does seem very... intense," Eliot commented. Maura was a no-nonsense, in-charge type, and it reminded him of military doctors. "You know first hand this group doesn't like using doctors anyway, so think of it as a blessing in disguise."

Eliot sighed. "Do I have to?" he joked - somewhat. "At least they're not all cops and agents. Those inate prejudices get on my nerves."

"To be survivors," April corrected. "One day we'll need to teach Eve to survive too." She heard the bell from the toy Eve was playing with. "We already are." Or at least she was. To Eve, their power was all fun and games. She floated when she was enjoying herself, she floated her toys as a game, but April knew that her powers could save her life one day and she knew she'd train her how to use them to do so, even if this group went further than she might want to do with Eve.

"Skilled, competent, intense, territorial - she was very quick to let me know that this was her position and that she is the better trained one of the two of us. Even when it was surgery, she didn't think I had anything more than steadiness of hands to offer, in spite of the fact that it's my field not hers. Granted she is very skilled, I can't deny that, nor would I. She did a great job with Travis, I will be the first to admit that, but I wish she could acknowledge that we are two doctors here."

"Oh and she has no problems with people not wanting doctors," April added. "Naturally." Or rather she'd probably be caught dead admitting it.

April slapped his arm as he went on. "Yes, you do. We both do. For as long as this group is our home and team, we'll have to act the same way we did in Indiana. We'll have to make friends."

"Yes, but we're not fanatical about it. There's teaching her how to use and control her powers, and then there's teaching her physics. If it gets to the point they're given guns before they're teens, there are going to be serious problems," he said.

"A better trained doctor doesn't make her a better person," Eliot pointed out.

"If I must. Maybe they'll be won over by my making dinosaur meat taste like prime rib." Eliot shot her a small smile. He had his wife, his kid, and Nate. He really didn't need anyone else.

April didn't say anything, she knew Eliot's stance on guns, but she had a feeling these kids would be asking for guns sooner rather than later regardless of parents. If Eve grew up here, she wasn't under any delusion that she'd be any different. Their daughter would fight to learn to shoot well before they wanted to teach her. But that was a problem for the future, not something to worry about now.

"The others seems to like her just fine," April pointed out. "But thank you," she added with a smile. She could always rely on her husband taking her side, no matter what.

When Eliot continued she laughed. "I'm sure," she said. "Now let's just hope we're not the ones on the menu once we cross over."

This was the moment Sheldon had been waiting the past two years for. The moment when his theories were proven correct. The moment when Einstein, Newton, Planck, Tesla, Bohr, and every other great mind in history were nothing but footnotes on fourth-grade paper compared to his own accomplishments. Sure, he'd pretended to let others help with this. But this was all his doing as far as he was concerned, even though that was far from the truth. He was about to finally receive the honor he had always so richly deserved: The greatest mind in the multiverse.

As the portal finished roaring to life, Sheldon gripped the DHS-approved emergency kit that was attached to his back, then he turned to where Dom was standing and yelled, "I'll see you on the other slide, slow poke!" It was the best insult he could muster. Slow poke. He snorted.

Sheldon ran with every ounce of speed he had acquired since coming to this place. "YOLO!" He yelled as he ran into the portal. And then proud of himself, he added "BAZINGA!"

Those were the last words the greatest mind in the multiverse would ever utter. For just as soon as he emerged on the other side, he felt the sharp teeth of a gigantic reptile carve him into pieces.

Dom couldn't believe what Sheldon had done. No, correction, he totally could believe it, because Sheldon had to prove that he was better, smarter, overly excitable when it came to science. It was completely in character. Dom was the scheduled to lead the caravan and drove after Sheldon. Knowing why Sheldon had rushed through didn't make watching your friend being snapped up by a dinosaur any easier, especially because it seemed to confirm Derek's account of what happened to Jenna and Eric. Dom was still holding hope, and he would find out once they got settled.

He moved far enough to allow all the cars to move through before shutting off the car. "Shut off all the cars," he said over the walkie talkie. "Look through research book Nell gave us, see if you can find anything like that. It looks small enough that it won't go looking for a new prey for a while, but we need to know if it's a heard dinosaur or a solitary one.

Taking the walkie talkie again, he spoke as gently as he could to avoid loud noise when possible. "Okay, now that we're all here, any ideas how we want to do this? We can just drive around the forest or whatever this is." It certainly didn't look like Southern California

Brian had been driving the car since John was dealing with the machine, Vance looked like he'd spent the night partying and the damn dog couldn't drive. It was completely inhumane that he was forced to do this so early in the morning, and yet off they went into a new adventure. He could almost hear the voice-over in Savannah's voice in his head.

He thought it sucked.

But they made it through and John was in the car with the machine and in one piece. "Oh look, giant plants. Maybe we can find giant weed," he joked, but there were no comments from either one. He knew John wouldn't, still too busy doing whatever, but he expected some answer from Vance.

Brian looked over. "Sir?" He touched the other man gently and Vance slumped. "Jesus Fucking Christ... is he... is he dead?" Okay for as long as they'd been here, Brian had planned funerals, talked about dying, but he'd never really seen a body. He'd made sure to stay away from them when they happened close enough to where he might see them. "Jesus Christ," he repeated in a murmur. "We have a body in the fucking car." And asking John to get rid of it probably was not the proper response from a grown man. It was still fucking tempting.

He changed the frequency and called Deeks privately. "Whatever idea they have, it's all yours to decide. Vance is dead." He went back to the general frequency.

Jesus fucking Christ.

There was a body in his car.

John was stabilizing the machine, making sure it was secure for transport after they'd hurried through, when he heard Brian speak. And then his entire focus was on Vance, leaning around from the back to check his pulse. Death confirmed, John let his hand rest on Vance's chest as he closed his eyes for a brief moment. God hadn't ever been part of his education, but John kind of hoped there was someplace out there where his friend and mentor could have peace.

Unfortunately, they didn't have time to mourn either Vance or Sheldon just then.

Taking a deep breath, John pushed his feelings aside and reached for his own walkie. "It's a rainforest, or close enough to one," he put out, answering Dom. This John knew well. "Give it a few hours and it'll probably live up to it's name. Good for us. We'll have plenty of drinking water once we rig up ways to catch and store it. My advice is we find somewhere to set up camp, first. Organize scouting parties second. We don't know where our people are or how long it will take to find them. We need a secure location to work from rather than traveling around like an all you can eat buffet without getting any sort of lay of the land. Over."

Switching channels as well, he hailed Deeks. "We need to deal with Vance's body and discuss the machine, too."

Robert was in the car with Tamira and Weston, which was good when he had to keep an eye on a kid that teleported and one that changed size, while driving because he was that anal, but at least Weston proved useful.

"G Man here says that there aren't any carnivors that would be in large groups, mostly one to five. He can't find anything exactly like that, but it looks like a baby something or other. The mother wouldn't get too far into this type of forest, which means there has to be some hill not too far," he said. "Before we move, we need to know where we're going. we need some areal view. How vicious are birds here and would John be able to fly without being eaten?"

Dom snorted over the frequency. "Birds are really vicious and really fast, at least the big ones. Also, whatever we know it's not going to translate with the same details. These animals have had over a hundred million years to change. We can guess when we have no choice, but let's not do it with John's life without looking at alternatives."

Alexis thought about it for a moment. "John, could you fly with me? I can make us both invisible, and birds don't follow body heat, so we should be okay. Unless someone has a better idea."

Robert jumped in again. "No matter what the final solution, let me know and I'll move people from car to car. The less noise we make, the better it seems."

John just chuckled over the air. "I was going to suggest that, but figured I'd get an argument like Dom's. The Birds is one movie I've actually seen. But, with Alexis covering both of us, it should be fine." And dinosaurs still weren't as bad as the machines in a lot of ways. "At least during the day. Some of these suckers had primitive echolocation abilities. So, night flights are what will be risky, even with Alexis' help. Alexis, bring your pack, just in case we have to make an emergency landing. I can carry you and it without a problem. My pack has tools we need for maintaining the machine, so I'll leave it here. Over."

"Since we need some sort of recon, go with that plan," Marty's voice came over the speaker. "Robert, can you take both Alexis and I over to the Director's car? Everyone else stay put and don't get out of the cars."

"Probably best to keep the walkies on the lowest volume setting that still lets you hear, too," John added. "As Dom pointed out, evolution's had it's way with these guys and we're not the top of the food chain any longer. But, we can also extrapolate some basic information. That small sounds carry in terrain like this is one of them. And there are smaller predators out there who won't have to worry about Mama being too big. So, too much noise is going to be a problem. Radio silence as much as possible is a good idea. Over."

It was still early in the morning. It wasn't that they lazied in bed, especially since there was no bed and he didn't think that Callen slept like a person, but there was no reason to rush through the day now that it was light for a good fifteen hours and very little to do besides their necessities.

This was the most relaxing since they had arrived in Omega.

The sudden sound of engines, plural, had them on high alert immediately. Derek looked at the others. "Cars," he said, because really it was enough.

"And trucks," Sam said. "Different noise." Then he said what he never would have said before coming here. "Morgan, do your thing and see if you can figure out what's going on."

"When did we put him in charge?" he asked Callen with a grin. "But let's follow your order anyway." He was using his power more and more, able to touch the mind of the other three easily when out hunting for food. Not knowing what he was going to find, he was more careful, but out of the darkness of the astral plane, there were some minds that were familiar. It was very easy to pull both Deeks and Dom into it.

The grin wasn't any less obvious in this plane. "Did you come for a visit?"

Dom groaned. "I hate when you do this, even if it is a lot more silent than a radio."

"More silent? You've made a ruckus. Try not to unless you want to be eaten. Now, how many people? How many cars? Anyway you can move without turning your cars on?"

"Man, are you a sight for sore eyes." Marty had been expecting Robert's sudden appearance, not Morgan pulling him into the astral plane. But, this made things a lot easier. "We've got everyone and their kids...and dogs. A fully loaded caravan of about thirty-one adults, seven kids, seven dogs, a tanker, three trucks, four vans, five cars and a hell of a mess in our wake. We already figured out the being eaten part...we lost Sheldon...and the being quiet part was just explained over the radio. But, if you want to try pushing the tanker in neutral, be my guest. We were just about to send John and Alexis up to do a little aerial recon, but if you've got a better suggestion, I'm all ears."

Marty glanced at Dom, but the man was family and without Sheldon, it was up to him and John to figure out the next step home. "Vance died in transit. The rest don't know and I'd rather not disseminate it until we're camped. You know the lay of the land. Tell me where to put us and I'll get us there."

And then they could figure out how this was going to work without Vance and with the people Marty wanted to hand the reins over to only knowing about half their people. Then there were the losses and family changes to explain. They'd crossed over, but it was going to be one very long day. "Oh, and you and Emily are godparents again. There's some good news to offset the rest."

"Oh man, congratulations." Probably not what Callen would have focused on, but it should be mentioned first before the details of settling in would make it impossible to think of anything but survival.

"All right, from the noise, we're a few miles North West. The only reason we heard it is because we're higher up and animals don't sound like that. The camp area is clear of vegetation and we have fires going most of the day. If he goes up, he will see signs of civilization. If he can rely the direction to Robert, he can teleport some of those cars and trucks. Limit the noise. Worse comes to worse, we'll take the people first and worry about the vehicles later." Of course by later he meant long enough to bring the people to safety. "Camping is going to require major work to clean up a bigger area. Plants attracts animals and animals mean that we're snacks. so get ready to work."

"Thanks." Despite the situation, Marty couldn't help grinning to think of Jamie.

But, that was short-lived. Duty called.

"We'll put them on a private channel. The two of them are capable of being quiet enough. I'll have Robert bring over John and Brian's car first. It's got both Vance and the machine. And once Robert doesn't need John to navigate, John and Brian can start getting you guys up to speed on what I'm bringing to your doorstep, as well as put names to the new faces for you. I'll stay with Robert until the last run to make sure everyone gets here and then we'll fill in any holes John and Brian can't."

Derek was wondering why they needed private channels. He just needed to concentrate, touching the different minds, before pulling John, Alexis and Robert into the astral plane.

What he didn't hear was Savannah reaching for the radio as Deeks lost consciousness. "We've made contact. Everyone hold on, and if you see anything strange happening, don't panic," she told everyone.

It was the one reason why Alexis wasn't freaking out when they found themselves talking in this darkness. "Derek, good to see you, but warn a person next time."

Derek chuckled. "Or maybe we just have to train more now. Just to give you the recap. Alexis and John, go up. We're a few miles North West. It's a pocket of nothing at the edge of the forest by the mountain. Get the coordinates, get them to Robert, Robert will teleport things here. Robert, if you can bring John's car first, we'd appreciate it." They would explain later. "Unless there are questions, let's do this."

"You heard the man."

When Derek dropped them out of the astral -- and it was weird that it literally took that little space of time for him to be Derek, again, instead of Morgan in Marty's head -- Marty took a second or two to reorientate himself to both body and surroundings. He didn't need to ask if Robert was teleporting Alexis over to John's car so they could take to the air. He knew there wasn't any need to waste further air time confirming that plan. Not with Robert, John, and Alexis. Some others he wouldn't be too sure about.

"Derek says congratulations on the baby," he told Savannah as he reached to take the walkie.

"Alright everyone. Here's the plan. John and Alexis are going to get us coordinates based on directions from Morgan. They'll relay those to Robert, who'll start teleporting everyone there. We're going to try to take what cars we can. But, we may have to leave some behind. So, make sure your packs are close. We're going in this order: The Director's van, the supply trucks, the tanker, those cars with kids, Dr. Isles' car, Nell's car, Queen's car, Claudia's car. Any questions, now's the time. When we start moving I want absolute radio silence unless it's what I'd call an emergency."

Elaine and Bud had their own rules. It was why they had never mentioned Bud's power. They used it for their own purposes, mostly going places they wanted to go. They had even taken Mother with them, knowing that even if she disagreed with their choices, she wouldn't betray them, or at least Elaine. Mother never had a problem with sticking it to Bud.

Now, it sounded like staying quiet worked in their disadvantage. She wasn't even going to point out the fact that their kids would come before them. She just looked at Bud and took the walkie talkie.

"Actually, Mr. Deeks, if the Colonel would be so kind to bring my husband to our destination, Bud can open a portal that would allow us to move without straining the Colonel," she said pleasantly, because she was not going to feeling guilty about not sharing. There was need to know and they didn't' need to know. "Someone like Troy could push the vehicles trough the portal and we would move without making any noise. I believe that would work in our favor and we won't have to leave behind any vehicles." Especially not theirs.

Bud smiled at Elaine's suggestion. All other things being equal he would've preferred to keep his power a secret, but those other things weren't equal. And the assholes in charge were planning on having them be moved anything but first. So as far as Bud was concerned they were going to be among the first one way or the other. He looked his face over in the vehicle's mirror because he was sure someone would be taking a swing at him for not revealing his power earlier.

"You made the right call, Sugar," he said with a smile and kissed her on the cheek. "You're the only one for me." He said with a wink as he got out of the vehicle.

"Ready when you are, Colonel." Bud said, because it wasn't a matter open to debate for him. He puffed on the cigar while surveying the area through his sunglasses. No A/C. No indoor plumbing. No exquisite alcohol. This place was going to suck.

"Put that cigar out and get back in the car. You don't want to become snack for whatever it's here," she said, shaking her head, pretty angry until he got back inside.

She relaxed a little when he was safe. "Are you trying to get yourself killed? I thought we'd leave the rush decisions to our kids and I made the same call you were about to make, and we both know it." They might not have the country as their stage, but they hadn't stopped reading each other's minds when it came to planning.

"Oh and if you happen to open a portal right on top of this car, I won't be upset. We both know that you're control isn't perfect yet ad it would make up for giving me a heart attack by stepping outside. Don't do that again." Meaning that Elaine had the utter confidence that Bud would be able to do it, but she felt no qualms. Deeks wanted to leave them as dino bait while he brought to safety everyone else. They couldn't trust him to keep him alive. Maybe Bud could send him somewhere far away, but they'd worry about that later. "We'll just have to wait until they get that location, until then, there isn't much to do. Just wait.

Marty bit back a few choice words for Madame Would-be President and her husband, but didn't bother with a reprimand just then. Instead, he did something he rarely liked doing and silently slipped inside their heads. He needed to know, quickly, if this was the better option it sounded like and if Hammond was capable of doing what they suggested without stranding half the team. He might have chuckled at some of the surface thoughts he found along the way if he hadn't been supremely irritated at the selfish self-importance. No wonder their sons had issues.

"Detective," he corrected mildly over the general channel, once he had enough information. "Alright ladies and gentlemen, as Barrish has so kindly offered her husband's hitherto unknown services, same plan, different powers. When John and Alexis have the location, they'll relay it to Robert who'll take Hammond over. Hammond will open a portal. Troy, Nell, and April, you three will combine your powers to move the vehicles through. Tanker and supplies first, then those cars with kids, Dr. Isles' car and then the rest. Troy, April, and Nell, you three need to tell me if it's better for you to work from this side of the portal or the far side. We'll arrange people in cars to facilitate things however you need to get the job done safely and quickly."

Switching channels, he put a private word through to Robert. "When John gets you the location, do me a favor and take the Director's car over before Hammond. I want that machine and Vance safely through to where G and the others can keep an eye on things without certain politicians' shenanigans risking everyone's chances of getting out of here later."

"I'd rather do it from this side since I can visualize it better, but people will have to move those cars away from the portal once they get there, so maybe have Nell go with the first trasport, leave everyone else where they are," Troy said

Robert waited until he heard Troy over the walkie talkie. "I'll grab Nell before getting Vance's car, and then I'll get Hammond. Now let me get John and Alexis. Out." Time to do some work.
