"You mean like you do when you're out patrolling the perimeter at night?" she asked, arching an eyebrow. Sighing, she stopped and faced him. "The Wright Brothers were the first to create and successfully fly an airplane. Although, really they're credited with it, but they weren't the first to fly. They were the first to do it with controls that made fixed-wing flight possible."
Sometimes she really wondered if all men were this obtuse. "First, you'd have said no if I said I was taking you out on a date, Derek. And we both know it. Second, when exactly have we ever been able to spend a day like this? We haven't been anywhere before that made horses and hot air balloons an option, specifically. And the last time we took a trip like this, we had half the time, a wedding to attend, and you spent most of it patrolling the island. Third, what I had in mind wasn't all that conspicuous. And it shouldn't really have been so hard to figure out after you practically told me good-bye a month ago. I took the first opportunity we had to do something like this and I told you this morning I wanted to spend some time with you. Sure, I might have left off the part where it was 'a date' and avoided mentioning your birthday specifically. But, you didn't want a fuss. Hence the teasing about dates because what we call it doesn't matter."
She huffed softly. "Exactly. You wouldn't ask. So, you assume you know the answer. Well, I'm sorry I can't give you my power to take with you."
